MCP slams Govt over delayed CDF disbursement

By Chisomo Phiri

The main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has expressed disappointment over the government’s continued failure to begin disbursing Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations to constituencies.

MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwira said in an interview with 247 Malawi News that the delay in releasing the funds is slowing down development projects across the country.

She argued that the situation has stalled projects initiated under the previous administration of former president Lazarus Chakwera, thereby hindering the country’s development.

Kabwira further accused the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of failing to fulfil its promises after taking office, saying the delays reflect poor governance.

She added that the MCP will continue to stand with Malawians who are struggling, insisting that the country’s economic and development challenges remain unresolved.

Commenting on the same, Umodzi Party (UP) president Thomas Kaumba called for a review of the national budget to ensure it reflects the country’s current economic realities.

Recently, Minister of Local Government Ben Phiri announced that the government had started releasing CDF funds to councils that had met the required conditions.

It has been three months since the government presented the 2026/27 National Budget.

However, inflation remains above 23 percent, while the widening budget deficit, the gap between government revenue and expenditure  continues to pose a significant threat to Malawi’s economy.
