Muluzi clarifies role in African politics book

By Rahim AbdulUnited

Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi has clarified that he contributed a chapter to a new book examining why African liberation movements have struggled to improve the living standards of the people they once fought to liberate.

In an interview with 247 Malawi News, Muluzi said he was among the contributors to Why Liberation Movements Fail: Perspectives from Across Africa, dismissing any impression that he authored the entire publication.

He explained that the book brings together perspectives from different African countries, with contributors examining political, leadership and governance challenges that have prevented liberation movements from meeting citizens’ expectations.

He said published by Penguin Publishers, the book was developed with the involvement of Dr.Greg Mills and Ray Hartley.

Muluzi said the publication provides an opportunity to reflect on why movements that played significant roles in Africa’s independence struggles have failed to translate their historical achievements into improved living conditions for ordinary people.

He said the book is available in hard copy at selected bookshops outside Malawi, including Exclusive Books, and can also be purchased online.

The UDF leader expressed hope that local bookshops will stock the publication to enable Malawians to engage with its perspectives on African politics, leadership and governance.

Muluzi also clarified that he did not financially invest in publishing the book, emphasising that his role was limited to contributing a chapter.

He disclosed that plans are underway to launch the publication, although the venue, country and programme has yet to be finalised.

Looking ahead, Muluzi said he intend to contribute to more books, using such platforms to share his perspectives and experiences on issues affecting Malawi and the wider African continent.
