MZUNI Suspends Student Union Leader for Two Years Over K3.9m Transport Fund Misuse

By Jones Gadama

Mzuzu University (MZUNI) has suspended its Face-to-Face Students Union Chairperson, Allan Chiyembekezo, for two academic years after finding him culpable of misappropriating K3.9 million allocated for student transport assistance.

The university’s Office of the Registrar confirmed that the disciplinary measure followed a hearing by the Student Disciplinary Committee on 10 April 2026. The committee’s recommendation was subsequently endorsed by the Vice-Chancellor.

The funds in question were earmarked to assist financially vulnerable students with travel expenses to return home at the end of the semester. MZUNI said the misuse of the money violated university regulations and undermined support meant for students in need.

As part of the same inquiry, fellow student Timothy Mwale, who had also been implicated, was cleared of any wrongdoing. The committee ruled that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with charges against him.

University authorities have reiterated their commitment to upholding accountability and safeguarding student welfare funds. Officials said the action should serve as a warning that mismanagement of student resources will not be tolerated.

Chiyembekezo’s suspension takes effect immediately and will bar him from participating in academic and union activities for the next two years.
