Mzuzu University (Mzuni) and the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) have signed a significant power purchase agreement that will see Mzuni supply electricity to the national grid.
This development comes as Mzuni embarks on developing a 50-megawatt solar power farm at Choma in Mzuzu, valued at approximately K137.5 billion.
The project, expected to be completed by 2026, will not only contribute to addressing the country’s power challenges but also serve as a source of income for the university.

Mzuni Vice Chancellor, Wales Singini, emphasized the institution’s commitment to providing practical solutions to Malawi’s energy challenges.
The solar power plant is part of Mzuni’s broader strategy to invest in renewable energy sources.
According to Singini, the university is exploring various forms of renewable energy, including geothermal and wind power. Mzuni has already been championing the use of biogas in communities, showcasing its dedication to innovative and sustainable energy solutions.
The solar power project will also provide Mzuni students studying energy programs with valuable practical experience, preparing them for the industry.
Minister of Energy, Ibrahim Matola, praised Mzuni for its initiative, encouraging other universities to follow suit. Matola highlighted the need for increased investment in the energy sector to ensure the stability of the national grid. “Mzuni is proving that it is possible to walk the talk by investing in power generation,” Matola said. “Universities can play a practical role in providing solutions to the challenges facing the country.”
Escom Chief Executive Officer, Kamkwamba Kumwenda, welcomed the partnership, noting that the Mzuni solar farm will enhance power generation and alleviate power challenges, particularly in the Northern region.
This agreement marks a significant step towards diversifying Malawi’s energy mix and promoting sustainable development.
The project has evolved from its initial plan of a 20-megawatt plant valued at K43.4 billion to a more ambitious 50-megawatt solar power farm.
This development underscores Mzuni’s commitment to contributing to Malawi’s energy security and economic growth.
As the country looks to increase its power generation capacity, initiatives like the Mzuni solar farm will play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable energy future for Malawi.
