The Ngoni Heritage Trust says it requires K180 million to successfully organize this year’s annual uMlhangano wa Maseko Ngoni cultural ceremony, one of Malawi’s most significant traditional events dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Maseko Ngoni people.
The organization made the appeal during a press briefing held in Lilongwe, where it outlined its fundraising plans and preparations for the annual celebration.
Speaking during the briefing, Ngoni Heritage Trust Secretary General iMpi Kandi Padambo said the organization is optimistic that the required funds will be raised through a series of fundraising activities scheduled ahead of the ceremony.
Padambo said the fundraising programme will include a gala dinner to be held on 21 August and a golf tournament on 22 August, alongside other initiatives aimed at mobilizing financial support from individuals, corporate organizations and well-wishers.
He emphasized that adequate funding is essential to ensure the successful hosting of the cultural event, which attracts thousands of participants from across Malawi and neighbouring countries each year.
According to Padambo, the annual gathering plays a vital role in promoting and preserving the customs, traditions and identity of the Maseko Ngoni people for future generations.
This year’s uMlhangano wa Maseko Ngoni ceremony is expected to take place from 31 August to 5 September at the Gomani Chikuse Heritage Site in Mkolimbo Village, Ntcheu District.
The week-long event will bring together traditional leaders, community members, cultural groups and visitors to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Maseko Ngoni through traditional dances, historical commemorations and other cultural activities.
Organizers say the ceremony continues to serve as an important platform for strengthening cultural identity, fostering unity among the Maseko Ngoni people and promoting Malawi’s diverse cultural heritage.
The Ngoni Heritage Trust has since appealed to the public, the private sector and development partners to support the fundraising campaign to ensure the successful hosting of this year’s cultural festival.
