The Seventh-day Adventist Church has asked United Transformation Movement leader Dalitso Kabambe to stop urging people to vote for him in the 2030 presidential election, saying Malawi is not in a campaign period.
Speaking during a camp meeting at Mpemba in Blantyre on Sunday, Pastor Ellaton Magalasi told congregants during the divine service that the country concluded its last election cycle and that the Malawi Electoral Commission has officially closed that process.
According to the church, Mr. Kabambe has been visiting places where people gather and is alleged to be telling audiences to vote for him in 2030.
The SDA said such early politicking shows a misunderstanding of electoral timelines and distracts from governance.
“This is the time for President Peter Mutharika to work. He was given a five-year mandate by Malawians to govern, and he should be allowed to deliver without unnecessary distractions,” Pastor Magalasi said.
A civil society organization has also threatened legal action against Mr. Kabambe, arguing that campaigning for presidency outside the period set by law undermines electoral procedures.
The group says it will seek court intervention if the alleged conduct continues.
Efforts to get a comment from Mr. Kabambe were unsuccessful by press time, as he did not pick up calls.
Malawians say the administration needs space to implement development programs, and that premature campaigns risk compromising service delivery.
