All set for Karonga local government by-elections

Malawi Electoral  Commission (MEC) commissioner Calorine Mfune says all is set for the local government  by-elections in three wards of Karonga North Constituency on Tuesday next week.

The wards are Rukulu, Chilanga and Kapolo.

Mfune who is also chair of legal services committee at  MEC says Tuesday will be an important day for people living in the aforementioned wards to choose their preferred representatives.

She was speaking this on Friday at Kamuzu International Airport(KIA) in Lilongwe when she was  receiving ballot papers and result sheets for the polls.

“It will be an important day for them and as a commission, we are well prepared for the by-elections,” she said.

A total of 21 candidates have been approved to contest in the by-elections.

The by-elections follow the conviction of three ward councilors in September last year who were found guilty of fraudulently pocketing K2.4 million from vendors in exchange for plots.

Bushiri’s  food relief distribution initiative reaches over half million beneficiaries

The food relief distribution initiative by prophet Shepherd Bushiri in the country has so far reached to over a half million beneficiaries since it started last month.

This is according to Bushiri’s spokesperson Aubrey Kusakala.

Kusakala says so far, the initiative has covered 11 districts with Nkhotakota residents among the latest beneficiaries.



He adds that they have intensified the distribution stating that this week they have  dispatched 12 trucks across the country.

“The food distribution initiative seeks to cushion one million people amid hunger which is haunting the country.  

“Some of the districts that have benefited are Zomba, Nkhatabay, Rumphi  Lilongwe, Nsanje , Thyolo, Mulanje, Ntcheu, Karonga and Mangochi,” says Kusakala.

Bushiri has been involved in many charitable works around the world, including Malawi, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Botswana, and South Africa.

The man of God formed a humanitarian organization called “Shepherd Bushiri Foundation” with Duncan Zgambo as the CEO,where he provides for the needy and less privileged.

He provides charitable donations, including livelihood support; educational support for orphans; humanitarian relief through food subsidies.

Good Neighbours, Malawi National Spelling Bee sign MoU to promote educational standards in Malawi

Malawi National Spelling Bee and Good Neighbors Malawi on Friday signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) that will see the two organizations working together in promoting educational standards and improving literacy levels in the country through the Spelling Bee competitions.

Speaking during the partnership signing ceremony in Lilongwe, Malawi National Spelling Bee country director Lewis Mbaula said the  partnership deal will enable his organisation reach out to children in hard to reach areas of Lilongwe and Kasungu where Good Neighbours is implementing its programmes.

“Spelling Bee competition enhances the reading culture, build vocabulary and confidence in children and also provides opportunities and exposure to the children. It has always been our wish to reach children in such areas and this is a great gesture,” he said.



Good Neighbours country director Gyo Jin Joo said about 200 children in the communities where the organisation is implementing its programmes will benefit.

“We have children’s clubs in communities and we want to provide an opportunity for exposure, motivation and fun.

“The two-year monetary support is subject to extension as we want to reach as many children as possible,” she said.

Approximately 10 000 to 15 000 children participate in the National Spelling Bee competition every year in 19 districts of the country except Likoma, Nkhotakota,Thyolo, Mwanza and Rumphi.

Undule hails President Chakwera for the Malawi’s State of Disaster Declaration Due to El Niño Weather Patterns

Human rights and social commentator Undule Mwakasungula has commended president Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s strategic decision of declaring a state of disaster in 23 out of 28 districts following the disaster which has heavily affected the areas.

He said in response to the escalating challenges posed by El Niño weather patterns, President Lazarus Chakwera’s declaration of disaster is welcome.

Undule said the action reflects a proactive and commendable move by the government.

“This action is an indication of the administration’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of Malawians and addressing the increasing impacts of natural disasters, ” he said.

He said the declaration carries several important benefits for Malawi and all Malawians citing the point that,  this serves as a key step in mobilizing resources and assistance to mitigate the adverse effects of El Niño. 

He said by formally acknowledging the severity of the situation, the government could leverage both domestic and international support to provide immediate relief and long-term resilience-building measures for affected communities.

Undule said , the declaration facilitates enhanced coordination and collaboration among various stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and humanitarian partners.

“These efforts ensure a more effective and efficient response to the crisis, maximizing resource allocation and minimizing duplication of efforts. Importantly, President Chakwera’s emphasised on national unity amidst the disaster highlights the imperative of transcending political divides for the collective good. By rallying together as a one nation, Malawians could utilize their collective strength and resources to confront the challenges at hand, promoting resilience and solidarity across communities, ” he said.

Undule said the current situation also offers valuable lessons for Malawi and its citizens  by reminding  them on the importance of proactive disaster preparedness and risk management strategies.

Chakwera declares State of Emergency over El-Nino weather conditions

President Lazarus Chakwera has declared a State of National Disaster in 23 districts impacted by the El-Nino weather conditions.

The districts have suffered from irregular rainfall, flooding, and prolonged rainy seasons, leading to a significant decline in agricultural production.

Nearly two million farming households are estimated to have been adversely impacted by these adverse weather conditions.

The Malawi leader said the decision has been informed by a report that he has received from the Ministry of Agriculture, which worked hand in hand with institutions such as UNDP and DoDMA, on his instruction.

Dr Chakwera said the 23 districts have suffered from irregular rainfall, flooding, and prolonged rainy seasons, leading to a significant decline in agricultural production.

Nearly two million farming households are estimated to have been adversely impacted by these adverse weather conditions.

Addressing the public on Saturday night, Dr Chakwera said Malawi is feeling the impact of climate change that has resulted in sporadic rains, floods and dry spells.

He added that 749,113 Hectares of crop production has been affected, representing 44.3 % of national area.
