ABJ Challenges media to join efforts of creating opportunities for economic growth

0

By Alfred Chauwa

The Association of Business Journalists in Malawi (ABJ) says media has an important role in helping  rebuild the economy as Malawi strives  to recover the economy after suffering from different shocks.

ABJ outgoing National coordinator Enelles Nyale said this in Mangochi when opening  this year’s ABJ Annual General Conference, which has been  held under the theme ; Economic Resilience: Unpacking Malawi’s Path to Recovery in the Aftermath of Ravaging Exogenous Shocks.

Nyale said in recent years, Malawi has faced significant challenges stemming from a range of exogenous shocks that include the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change induced isasters, and global economic fluctuations

“These external forces have tested the very fabric of our economy and our resilience as a nation. Agriculture, our primary economic driver, has been particularly vulnerable, as have other sectors like tourism, trade, SMEs, and the  manufacturing sector
The global disruptions have led to food insecurity, currency depreciation, rising inflation, and a growing national debt burden,” she said.

She said that as Malawians  reflect on these impacts, it is important to unpack not only the strides made but, more importantly, how we build a path to recovery.

Nyale stated that this year’s theme, “Economic Resilience,” is both timely and urgent.

She said journalism plays a crucial role in this endeavour.

” As the voice of the public and a bridge between policymakers and citizens, business journalists have a responsibility to present accurate, insightful, and analytical perspectives on our economic situation. You are more than just reporters of facts—you are interpreters of data, narrators of the national story, and watchdogs of the processes that drive economic policies,” she said.

Nyale said the power of the press can not be overstated in the current situation.

She said  investigative stories and analyses that help the public understand complex economic challenges, hold decision-makers accountable, and foster informed debate on how the country can firge ahead

Meanwhile, ABJ has new leadership following the elections, which took place on Saturday, 28 September,  2024.

Here is the full executive:

Alex Banda

Secretary General
Chikondi Kachere

Deputy Secretary General
Edith Kayira Gondwe

Treasurer
Wezzie Nyirongo Chamanza

Executive Members
Davie Taulo
George Banda
Simeon Shumba
Timothy Kachedwa.

In an inclusive interview,  newly elected ABJ National Co-ordinator Arthur Chokhotho described the associations membership as pivotal in interpreting data on the current economic situation  as irresponsible and unprofessional information dissemination has taken center stage,  misleading people.

“There are questions from the public like , why are commercial banks making profits when the Reserve Bank of Malawi continues to suffer losses. Malawians  need to understand the liabilities the central  bank has as a result, the continued skyrocketing balance of payment. Possibly understanding that the government keeps the capital base of the central bank afloat  through promissory notes would help Malawians who are hard working to contribute to domestic production using the already existing assets like land, water which many Malawians do not know can help improve the economy . It is only through well-informed reporting that ABJ is fostering  that we can achieve this.” Said Chokhotho.

During the function , Secretary to the Treasury Betchani Tchereni was the Guest of Honour.

Uladi Musa, who recently made the switch from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has expressed confidence in the MCP’s ability to win next year’s elections. Speaking at a gathering, Musa highlighted that the MCP is the only party fully equipped with the necessary resources and leadership to secure victory in the 2025 elections.

Musa emphasized that, unlike other parties, the MCP has demonstrated a strong foundation and strategic vision, which he believes will resonate with the electorate. “No other party stands a chance of winning the upcoming elections,” Musa stated, stressing that the MCP is the best positioned to address the challenges Malawi faces.

Musa’s confidence stems from what he describes as the party’s proven track record under President Lazarus Chakwera. According to him, the MCP has shown an unmatched commitment to development and progress, making it the natural choice for voters in the next elections. He urged supporters and fellow politicians to rally behind the MCP as it prepares to lead Malawi into a new chapter.

In his remarks, Musa dismissed the possibility of any other party winning the 2025 elections. He argued that while other parties may be active in their campaigns, they lack the cohesive leadership and strategic planning necessary to overcome the MCP. Musa encouraged Malawians to recognize the importance of choosing a party that has both the experience and vision to lead effectively.

Uladi Musa’s shift to the MCP and his bold statements reflect the growing confidence within the party as it gears up for the 2025 elections. His declaration that the MCP is the only party capable of winning underscores his belief in the leadership of President Chakwera and the party’s ability to tackle the challenges Malawi faces. As the elections draw closer, Musa’s comments are likely to resonate with supporters eager for continued progress under the MCP.

The Peaceful Commission has officially congratulated the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for their peaceful rallies held last week in Mzuzu and Ekwendeni, respectively. This commendation reflects a significant milestone in Malawi’s political landscape, where the emphasis on peaceful assembly is crucial for the promotion of democracy and civic engagement.

Both rallies provided platforms for the MCP and DPP to engage with their supporters, sharing visions and strategies as the country approaches the next election cycle. The Peaceful Commission highlighted that the orderly conduct of these events is a testament to the political maturity of both parties. Such events not only allow for the expression of political ideas but also serve to strengthen democratic practices within the nation.

“Peaceful assembly is a fundamental right, and we commend both parties for demonstrating that political rallies can be conducted without violence or disruption,” the Commission stated. This acknowledgment is essential in reinforcing the notion that political differences can be navigated through dialogue rather than conflict.

The Commission emphasized that the successful execution of these rallies sets a positive precedent for future political gatherings in Malawi. With increasing political tensions in many regions, it is imperative that political parties prioritize peace and respect for the law during their engagements.

The peaceful nature of the rallies is a crucial step towards fostering unity among Malawians, encouraging a culture where citizens feel safe to express their political views and participate in the democratic process. It also reflects a broader commitment to upholding the values of democracy, tolerance, and mutual respect.

The Peaceful Commission’s congratulations to the MCP and DPP for their peaceful rallies is a vital recognition of the importance of civility in politics. As Malawi moves closer to the elections, it is essential for all political parties to emulate this spirit of peaceful engagement, promoting a political environment that encourages constructive dialogue and collaboration. The commitment to peaceful political processes will not only strengthen democracy in Malawi but will also pave the way for a more harmonious society.

Unmasking the attacks on SPC Colleen Zamba: A scheme to undermine leadership

By Burnett Munthali

In what emerges as a startling revelation, the persistent attacks directed at Ms. Colleen Zamba, Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC), have roots in a well-coordinated scheme aimed at undermining her credibility. These attacks portray her as someone intent on contravening established rules and regulations, particularly within the realm of public procurement. However, those close to the situation recognize Zamba as a natural leader, one whose decisive actions and candid communication style have unsettled many within the public service.

Our investigations reveal a systematic assault on Zamba’s character and office, aimed at framing her as a wrongdoer. The truth, however, is that her proactive stance has disrupted the status quo, exposing inefficiencies that have historically hindered government ventures and delayed the provision of essential services to the citizens of Malawi.

Zamba

In public service, it is often the case that delays and disorganization serve the interests of a select few individuals who thrive in chaos. Zamba first began her fight against these detrimental practices when she headed the Presidential Delivery Unit. Her inquiries into the reasons behind project and procurement delays attracted the ire of those benefiting from the disarray. As President Lazarus Chakwera promoted her to SPC, the intensity of the attacks on her escalated, with adversaries attempting to discredit her at every turn.

Zamba’s rise to the SPC position has not only been marked by significant responsibilities but also by relentless efforts from certain factions to depict her as engaging in wrongdoing. This has become a concerted effort to divert attention from the inefficiencies and corrupt practices entrenched in the public service.

As we delve deeper into these issues in our forthcoming articles, we will expose the unscrupulous individuals within the public service who seek to protect their interests at the expense of accountability and integrity. They aim to undermine Zamba’s efforts to bring about positive change and transparency in government operations.

The narrative surrounding SPC Colleen Zamba reflects a broader struggle for integrity within the Malawian public service. As we prepare to reveal more about the attacks against her and the motivations behind them, it becomes increasingly clear that her leadership is a threat to those who benefit from the existing chaos. Stay tuned for breaking news and in-depth analyses in our upcoming articles, where we will shine a light on the challenges Zamba faces and the imperative for accountability in public service.
