Richard Chimwendo Banda: Malawi’s rising political star

By Linda Kwanjana

If there was an annual award for the most impactful politician in Malawi, Richard William Chimwendo Banda would scoope it with ease.

You don’t need to love Chimwendo Banda to appreciate the ingenuity, the industry and the hard work he puts onto whatever he lays his work on.

I have observed Malawi politics for the past five years; the same period Chimwendo surged to prominence and my conclusion is that there has not been a politician that period whose presence in Malawi politics looms large than Chimwendo’s.

Chimwendo

If he had not made a name for himself while he was in the opposition, many people could have attributed his rise to stardom to the leverage of power at his disposal, but hell no- the guy has worked his way up from nothing. While the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) regaining of power is largely attributed to the party’s organizational sense, not much is talked about of Chimwendo’s contribution on to the same.

Chimwendo Banda is a man too many: His approach to hardwork is unmatched. His political moblilisation and
ability to energise the crowd are second to none. It is these attributes that earned him the monikor “bulldozor”

All these put together it one could see that Chimwendo was desimed for greatness, it was hardly surprising therefore to see him making in President Lazaru’s exclusively provisional”Cabinet at the beginning of his term.

He was appointed the Minister of Homeland Security. He joined the exclusive club comprising Felix Mlusu as th Minister Finance, Chikosa Silungwe the Attorney General, Mordecai Msiska who declined the appointment and was replaced by Titus Mvalo as Minister of Justice.

The impression i got from thesos appointments was that these were crucial positions to set the tone of Chakwera’s administration.

Over time, President Chakwera’s confidence in Chimwendo has grown from to strength to strength as evidenced by other responsibilities placed on his head. As some of his colleagues he was apponted with in that provision Cabinet fell by the way side, Chimwendo has been constant present in Chakwera’s Cabinet. Thus far, his influence has also stretched to the far corners of the Ministry of Sports where he had a stint and the Ministry of Local government where he is its current Minister.

Chimwendo is one politician who harbours enmity with politicians of the other camps. He find a common ground and interact with any politician across the political divide. Perhaps, it is this ability to reach out to others, politically, that compelled President Chakwera to appoint him Leader of House in Parliament.

By and large, Chimwendo Banda is a utility player; the more reason President Chakwera always entrusts him with responsibilities on top of his demanding tasks as a Minister and Leader of House. He is obviously in Chakwera’s mind when it comes to appointments. Like a tale of precious stone, his type is so rare to come by. He is a rare gem. MCP and indeed Chakwera are blessed to have him. He is what other partys do not have.

Still in his youthful ages, Chimwendo is one for the present and the future.

Kalindo tells DPP to bring its house in order

Political activist Bon Kalindo has advised the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to bring its house in order following the cancellation of an elective conference planned to be held from 26th to 27th December, 2023.

Kalindo observes that the cancellation of an elective conference has not meant well to genuine DPP supporters saying many wanted an elective conference to be held for the party to start making preparations on its bouncing back into government in the elections coming either in 2024 or 2025.

Kalindo

The activist has reminded DPP to be always watchout for the enemies from within claiming that some trusted senior DPP members are holding secret meetings at night to make sure that Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is not standing in the elections as a presidential candidate.

Speaking through an audio clip circulating in various social media platforms, Kalindo has however, asked DPP to make a research on the three people who went to court to obtain an injunction challenging the eligibility of Prof. Mutharika to stand in the elections.

He says it is also advisable to find the main aim of the three people going to court, who sent them to go to court, their names and sources of funds to pay the lawyer who issued them with an injunction copy to serve the DPP.

He has since, expressed fears that if these three people will not be identified, the DPP and Prof. Mutharika are sitting on a suicide bomb and any time it will explode forcing the DPP to go back to the drawing board as it will go to the elections without a presidential candidate.

The activist says it is sad that the very same people who for long have been posing threats to the DPP are declaring their interests to stand as candidates in various positions at the elective conference warning the DPP and Mutharika that the enemy from within will destroy them.

“I am giving the DPP free advice, to take it or leave it, there are enemies from within, open your eyes,” says Kalindo.

He has welcomed civil servants’ demonstrations to start on 29th December, 2023 with the nurses to be followed by all from 9th January, 2024 with a question to the MCP led government that is it ready to arrest all these civil servants?

Kalindo has asked the MCP to stop funding business people and chiefs organizing press conferences to denounce demonstrations reminding it that demonstrations are in the Republican Constitution and no one will stop them.

He has finally thanked the Catholic Bishops in Malawi for siding with the Malawian culture assuring the citizens that Priests will not bless same-sex marriages and that marriage remains the union between man and a woman naturally open to the generation of children.

Create jobs for yourselves-graduates challenged

By Chisomo Phiri

As Malawi continues facing job scarcity challenge, graduates have been challenged to create job for themselves rather than relying on formal employment.

Speaking on Wednesday at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) during the graduation of 45 students who were studying certificates in electrical installation at the institution, MUBAS Head of ODeL Dr. Annie Tamara Chizengo said to avoid frustrations that come when graduates are not employed, it is good for them to start creating jobs for themselves.

She said :” You all know that nowadays unemployment levels are high and there are so many bad things happening to our frustrated graduates such as venturing into immoral behaviors. So to avoid such things here at MUBAS, we urge the graduating students to always focus on self-employment rather than formal employment.

“We impart in them entrepreneurship skills so that as they go out, they should be able to establish and run their own businesses and in so doing creating for jobs themselves and even their friends.”

Chizengo assured that MUBAS will not stop introducing programmes that can promote self-employment among the youths in the country.

“We have so many programmes here at MUBAS that are aimed at empowering graduates to be self-employed. We want graduates who are able to create jobs for themselves and contribute to the country’s social-economic development,” she said.

On his part, one of the graduating students Kelvin Mwikhoma said he is ready to start his own business using the knowledge he has gained from the institution.

“As a graduate, I will not wait for someone or a company to employ me.I have gained much knowledge in electrical installation here and I will use that to open up my business,” said Mwikhoma.

Unemployment rate in Malawi decreased to 5.60 percent in 2022 from 5.70 percent in 2021.

Jumah invites Malawi citizens to be elections jury

President of Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP) Bantu Saunders Jumah, has invited all Malawians regardless of their political party affiliations to be the Jury for the country to return to constitutional order so that elections are held on 21st May, 2024 not September, 2025.

Jumah said constitutionally Members of Parliament (MPs) are to serve for a period of 5 years in office and have extended their term of office by another one year to make it 6 years in office describing this as unconstitutional.

Muvi wa Chilungamo

He has since asked Malawians where will the country get money to pay these MPs who have extended their term of office for another one year urging Malawians to do whatever is possible to bring the country back to constitutional order.

Speaking through his face book page widely followed by millions of people in Malawi and Africa, Jumah has asked Malawians a question that are they ready to accept this unconstitutional order for elections to be held in September, 2025?

Jumah said time to correct mistakes for the country is now expressing fears that if Malawians do not correct this unconstitutional order, the country will be a failed one meaning that it has politicians who are above the law and are taking the citizens for granted.

He said politics of deniability is what is killing Malawi for it not to develop because it has leaders who do not fear the voters claiming that leaders do not accept their mistakes and apologize for the mistakes or wrongs to do better.

The MRP President said in 1997 former President and Malawi’s Founding Father Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda apologized to the nation that he did not know that some other people were carrying out atrocities under his name apologizing to Malawians for the atrocities committed.

He said for 10 years, former President Dr. Bakili Muluzi ran the country un deniability by accepting challenges rocking the country but 19 years after Muluzi, the country is in political deniability with its leaders covering the mess.

“Malawi needs politicians; men and women who can accept the wrong doing and learn to apologize, failure has no weather, not to using the country for trial and error, “said Jumah.

He said Malawi leaders have been blaming Covid-19 pandemic, Tropical Cyclones including Freddy, cholera outbreak and the Russia-Ukraine war as contributing factors making the country fail to develop saying any leader, government, President who cannot accept mistakes, no development for the country.

Jumah has appealed to Malawians not to lose heart, not to give up but moving forward assuring them that the Revolution has come to stay in Malawi, Malawi will not be the same saying very soon or later, the country will be liberated from politicians who use politics of deniability.
