On Saturday, 21 September 2024, President Lazarus Chakwera sat as one of the esteemed panelists at the Columbia University World Leaders Forum, an event known as the Bollinger Convening. The forum, themed “Food for Humanity,” brought together world leaders, academics, and policymakers to discuss the role of universities in promoting social research on sustainable, data-driven solutions to combat global food shortages.

The discussions centered around policy and governance frameworks aimed at empowering communities to translate research findings into practical food production strategies. President Chakwera used the platform to share insights into Malawi’s efforts to address food insecurity and highlighted some of the setbacks the country has faced in its quest to provide adequate food for its population.

In his address, Chakwera underscored the importance of agriculture as a pillar of his administration’s strategy to expedite economic growth. He discussed the critical role of agriculture in Malawi’s development and acknowledged that, despite the challenges, there is vast potential for the sector to drive economic transformation.

President Chakwera also took the opportunity to promote Malawi as an investment-ready destination for commercial agriculture. He emphasized the need for partnerships between governments, universities, and think tanks to develop innovative solutions for achieving food security for current and future generations. The president reiterated his administration’s determination to foster collaborations that will enhance sustainable agriculture and ensure long-term food security in the face of global challenges like climate change.

This engagement comes at a crucial time as Malawi, like many other nations, continues to face the impact of climate change and economic instability on food production. The discussions at the Bollinger Convening align with global calls for #ClimateActionNow and the shared vision for a sustainable future, as highlighted during the ongoing 79th United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA79).

In conclusion, President Chakwera’s participation at the Columbia University World Leaders Forum underscores Malawi’s commitment to advancing sustainable agricultural practices and collaborating with global institutions to achieve food security for all.

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers recorded the biggest victory in the TNM Super League  with a 10-0 rout of relegation-bound Baka City FC on Saturday afternoon as Isaac Kaliati scored five goals and registered three assists with Clement Nyondo grabbing a hat-trick and one assist.

Kaliati put the Nomads in front just four minutes from kick-off with a simple tap-in after receiving an excellent pass from Clement Nyondo.

Misheck Botomani doubled the Nomads’ lead  five minutes later after Isaac Kaliati’s cross found him unmarked in the penalty box.

Gaddie Chirwa had a chance to increase the lead in the 13th and 16th minute but  Baka goalkeeper Abraham Mwandenga made brilliant saves to avoid further embarrassment for the northern region side.

Baka City made their first substitution in the 21st minute with Amon Mwakitalu replacing Tambulani Mwale.

This did not yield anything as the Nomads scored their third goal through Clement Nyondo who scored with a beautiful header in the 27th minute after receiving a cross from Isaac Kaliati.

Nyondo completed his brace in the 38th minute with a beautiful strike from his left foot, beating Mwandenga in goals for the visitors and it ended 4-nil in the first half.

The Nomads started the second half with a goal from Isaac Kaliati who scored from the penalty spot after substitute Wallas Adam was fouled by a Baka City defender in the penalty box in the 46th minute.

The veteran midfielder scored his third goal with an assist from Wallace Adam in the 64th minute before  scoring his fourth goal seven minutes later.

Gaddie Chirwa scored the eighth goal for the Lali Lubani boys as he slots to the far post after receiving a pass from Isaac Kaliati in the 70th minute.

Clement Nyondo completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute as he scored the ninth goal of the match after beating two Baka City defenders before hitting the back of the net with a powerful shot.

Kaliati who was also voted man of the match, scored his fifth goal of the match in the 80th minute after receiving an assist from Dan Kudonto.

Kaliati almost made it 11 for the Nomads but his goal in the added time was ruled out for an offside.

The win means that the Lali Lubani boys have now accumulated 41 points, four points  behind league leaders Silver Strikers who remain on top of the log table with 45 points.

The central bankers however, have a chance to increase the lead at the top as they take on Kamuzu Barracks at home on Sunday.

Baka City remain bottom on the log table with 8 points after playing 20 games.

Elsewhere, the match between Moyale Barracks and Creck Sporting ended goalless at Mzuzu Stadium.

Creck are on third position with 31 points from 20 games while the Lions of Kaning’ina are perched on position 8 with 29 points after playing 21 games.

On Sunday, Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos will play Civil Service United at Dedza Stadium as defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets host Chitipa United at Kamuzu Stadium.

In Mzuzu, Mzuzu City Hammers will play Mighty Tigers at Mzuzu Stadium  as Karonga United play Mafco FC at Rumphi Stadium.

The Church of God and Saints of Christ has voiced its deep concern over the arrest and detention of Pastor Moses Shumba and Mr. Stack Chimalizeni, who are currently being held at Lingadzi Police Station in Lilongwe. In a press release signed by Twink Jones Gadama on Saturday, 21 September 2024, the church expressed its belief that the arrest is politically motivated and called for the immediate and unconditional release of both individuals.

Despite the challenges they face, the church was relieved to confirm that Pastor Shumba is in good health. However, they strongly condemned the charges brought against him and Mr. Chimalizeni, which are reportedly related to cyber crimes. The church believes these charges are simply a pretext for silencing their critical voices and sees this as part of a broader trend of political intimidation.

The Church of God and Saints of Christ emphasized that as advocates for democracy and human rights, they stand firmly against any attempts to suppress free speech in Malawi. The church urged the government to respect the rights of all citizens to express their views freely, and condemned the use of legal instruments as a means of political persecution.

Meanwhile, several leaders of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), including Vice President for the South Joseph Mwanamveka, National Publicity Secretary Shadrick Namalomba, Chipiriro Npinganjira, and Yusuf Nthenda, visited Pastor Shumba at Lingadzi Police Station to show their support. The DPP leaders echoed the church’s concerns and condemned the government’s alleged attempt to silence opposition voices.

Firstly, the church is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Pastor Moses Shumba and Mr. Stack Chimalizeni, believing their detention is politically driven.

Secondly, the church urges the government to uphold the constitutional rights of all Malawians to express themselves freely without fear of intimidation or legal repercussions.

Thirdly, a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Pastor Shumba and Mr. Chimalizeni has been demanded, with the aim of ensuring justice and transparency.

The press release, signed by Twink Jones Gadama, spokesperson for Pastor Shumba and the Church of God and Saints of Christ, highlights the church’s commitment to standing up for human rights and democracy. As Malawi faces growing tensions between the government and its critics, this incident has raised serious concerns about the state of free speech and political freedoms in the country.

With pressure mounting from both the church and the opposition, the coming days will likely see increased scrutiny on the government’s actions and their approach to dissent. The church remains firm in its demand for justice and accountability, emphasizing that Malawi’s democracy must be protected from abuse of power.

Since the inception of his presidency, Dr Lazarus Chakwera vowed to transform Malawi into a sanctuary for all political factions in the nation.

President Chakwera has been observed on most occasions disassociating himself from the use of inappropriate language when addressing the nation and even Malawi Congress Party Members, a practice that has been notably absent among many other political leaders in the country for an extended period.

Through his political Speeches, President Chakwera has exemplified that politics revolves around numerical superiority rather than unrealistic ideologies and the propagation of misinformation about others.
