Bangwe All Stars to hold  fundraising dinner and dance

TNM Super League’s Bangwe All Stars Football Club has organised a fundraising dinner and dance scheduled for February 24 at Sogecoa Golden Peacock Hotel in Blantyre to raise funds for the team’s operations.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, the club’s Chief Executive Officer Chikumbutso Mathumba said they have decided to host the dinner after the team’s assessment on what resources the team would require in the 2024 football season.

Mathumba said the team developed a number of fundraising activities to help prepare for the season, adding that the dinner will be a great opportunity to raise more funds to help in smooth running of the club.

“It is the first time our team decided to organise such an activity because with the experience that we had in the previous season, we have established that we may not have sufficient funds to enable us to run the team throughout the season,” said Mathumba.

Mathumba further said the team realised they have resources equivalent to 50 percent of the team’s total budget and that they are now brainstorming on how to acquire the remaining half.

He however expressed optimism that stakeholders and other well-wishers will support them with the remaining amount.

The event charges have been split up for entry into various categories which include single entry at K25,000 and double entry at K40,000.

Mathumba said they have organised special tables like Platinum which is at K3 million, Gold at K2 million while Silver Table is at K1 million.

He said the event will be spiced up with different well-known musicians like Skeffa Chimoto and Gibo Pearson, among others.

Commenting on the matter, sports analyst Kim Kamau, commended Bangwe All Stars for the initiative, saying the team has developed a good source of income, as it will help to minimise challenges faced by the club, pointing out that it is not easy for a football club to organise such kind of events.

“Well-wishers and other stakeholders can influence the circumstances of football here in Malawi. There is need for funds for our football clubs to grow, so it’s a good move by Bangwe All Stars, as this will boost the team’s performance,” said Kamau.

Kunkuyu says Government for Agriculture commercialisation

Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, has emphasised the need for Malawi to graduate from financing subsistence farming to agricultural commercialisation if the country is to attain the much needed food security at national level.

Kunkuyu, who is also government spokesperson, made the remarks at the Central Office of Information (COI) in Lilongwe on Tuesday during a press briefing on the status of the 2023/2024 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme (2023/2024 LS-FIRP).

Kunkuyu said the country is going towards that direction through provision of agriculture loans to farmers, as well as establishment of mega farms.

“We are now giving agricultural loans to farmers through National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF). These were farmers who were benefitting from the Agricultural Inputs Programme (AIP),” Kunkuyu said.

He said AIP is undergoing reforms and, as such, the number of beneficiaries keep changing in order to allow farmers graduate from subsistence to commercial farmers.

Speaking on the current food insecurity situation, Kunkuyu said government has put in place interventions implemented through maize distribution and cash transfer programmes.

The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) 2023 report indicated that 4.4 million people will be food insecure and in need of food assistance during the 2023/2024 consumption year.

“In response to the projection, government, through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) and in collaboration with humanitarian partners, facilitated development of the 2023/2024 LS-FIRP to mobilise resources and effectively coordinate the programme to address needs of food insecure people,” he said.

The exercise, which started in October 2023, has so far reached out to 4,375,448 food insecure people with either maize or cash.

In his remarks, Commissioner for DoDMA, Charles Kalemba said the Department is working hard to ensure deserving beneficiaries are reached out with either maize or cash.

In his State of the Nation Address during the opening of the 2024/2025 Budget Meeting of Parliament, President Lazarus Chakwera said his administration is committed to redesign AIP to make it more target-oriented in achieving food security.

The programme targeted 1.5 million farmers, with land holding sizes of 0.25 hectares to two hectares, to benefit in the 2023/2024 growing season and are expected to produce 1,125,000 metric tonnes, contributing to over 32 percent of the national grain requirement.

Haiya emphasized the importance of coaches in transforming the game in Malawi. He highlighted the need for continuous education and embracing technology in analyzing the game to make the Super League more competitive and to strengthen the national team. By providing the coaches with tools and resources to improve their skills, Haiya believes that Malawian football can reach new heights.

The Chairperson of the National Football Coaches Association of Malawi, Aubrey Nankhuni, expressed gratitude to the FAM President for organizing the course. Among the coaches attending the course are some well-known names in Malawian football. The Flames Coach, Patrick Mabedi Nyasa, is among those present, as well as Heston Munthali, Assistant Coach of Big Bullets, Leo Mpulula of the Tigers, Meke Mwase, Assistant Coach of the Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, and Peter Mponda, Head Coach of Silver Strikers.

The course aims to enhance the coaching skills of these individuals, giving them the tools and knowledge needed to excel in their roles. Through sessions focused on high performance analysis, the coaches will learn how to dissect the game, identify strengths and weaknesses, and make strategic decisions to improve team performance.

President Chakwera reach out to 4.3Mn hungry households

Minister of Information and Digitalization, Moses Kunkuyu, says President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera Government has reached out to 4.3 million people affected by hunger in the 2023/2024 season with maize aid and money.

Addressing the press conference in Lilongwe, Kunkuyu says more than 3 Million people have received maize and 173, 000 recipients have received K150, 000 each.

Kunkuyu says  Government in the next three days will continue to distribute flour to the people through the Department of Disaster Management (DodMa) saying that no one will die of hunger in this country.

According to the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Report (MVAC), 4.4 million people are affected by hunger and the DODMA has been distributing food and money to the affected people.

Chakwera through his crisis arm ,  the Department of Disaster Management (DODa) will be rolling out the K20billion maize flour distribution exercise.

In an exclusive interview, DOdma says the exercise targets 1.8 households.

“As you are aware that we had purchased 30,000 tones of maize which have been milled to 23 ,000 metric tonnes of flour, ” says dodma officials.

According to Dodma  the exercise is targeting 10 districts which were already mentioned in the Malawi vulnerable assessment comittee (MVAC) report.

These districts targeted  include Lilongwe , Machinga , Mangochi, Mulanje , Mzimba, Thyolo, Dowa, Karonga, Ntchisi, and Chitipa.

MCP top brass preaches violence free campaign in Karonga by-elections

Some ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) heavyweights on Sunday invaded Karonga district canvassing support for their councillor candidates in three wards which Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will be conducting by-elections on 26 March, 2024.

Among the top brass include Minister of Homeland Security, Zikhale Ng’oma, Minister of Youths and Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire, Kasungu Central legislator, Ken Kandodo and Karonga district MCP chairperson, Emmanuel Nkhoma.

Speaking to the gathering, Mkandawire who is also the party’s deputy regional governor for north north region asked the community to vote for MCP candidates in order eliminate the problems that they are facing.

According to Mkandawire, only MCP candidates can support President Lazarus Chakwera’s vision on the ground.

“You need to vote wisely. Vote for MCP candidates because they’re the ones who will be able to follow and support what the President of this country wants,” he pleaded.

He then asked all political parties that will participate in the race to conduct violence free campaign.

“I want to urge all MCP supporters to desist from any form of violence and focus on telling voters what the party and its candidates intend to do after voted into power,” he said.

Mkandawire said President Lazarus Chakwera as a servant leadership always fight for peace and unity.

He vowed that his party will sweep all seats.

On his part, Ng’oma said only MCP and Chakwera have good plans for Karonga residents therefore they should vote for their candidates.

Karonga district MCP chairperson, Emmanuel Nkhoma said under Chakwera, Karonga district has benefited a lot and in order to let this continue, the district must have more MCP representative at council level.

According him, some opposition councillors as well as MPs are fond of frustrating Chakwera’s vision on the ground in order to look as failure.

Nkhoma said such moves are delaying development projects as well as Chakwera’s vision on the ground.


MEC declared the three seats vacant after its councillors were convicted on corruption issues.

The three wards are Rukulu, Kaporo and Chilanga wards
