Kawale praises AGRA for its dedication to transforming Malawi’s agriculture sector

Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, has praised Alliance for a Green Revolution Africa (AGRA) for its dedication to transforming the agriculture sector in Malawi.

Speaking on Wednesday at the launch of the five-year Youth Entrepreneurship for the Future of Food and Agriculture Programme at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC), Kawale expressed the Ministry’s commitment to empowering youth to drive food system transformation and create dignified job opportunities for young people, including those with disabilities.

“As the Ministry of Agriculture, we are passionate about cultivating a bright future for Malawi with a legacy of agriculture excellence,” Kawale said .

On his part, Minister of Youth and Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire, echoed Kawale’s sentiment, acknowledging the immense potential of youth in developing the country through agriculture.

He said:”Young people are the driving force for economic growth, and this programme is a significant step towards empowering them through entrepreneurship in the agriculture sector.”

Secretary for Youth and Sports, Isaac Katopola, said that the initiative marks a crucial milestone in achieving sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient food systems.

The programme launch, themed “Empowering Youth for Decent Jobs and Climate-Resilient Food Systems,” featured lively discussions on addressing challenges and opportunities for sustainable food systems transformation in Malawi.

The event was a resounding success, paving the way for a brighter future for Malawi’s agriculture sector.

Microfinance institutions urged to support women

Microfinance institutions in the country have been urged to develop policies that prioritize financial support for women.

This call was made by Malawi Microfinance Network Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Duncan Phulusa, during the ‘Women in Microfinance Meeting’ held in Salima district on Wednesday.

Phulusa emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among microfinance institutions to empower women, which will also contribute to reducing gender-based violence.

“By supporting women, we can create a ripple effect of positive change in our communities,” he said.

On her part, Thandiwe Thipa, Internal Controls Manager at Microfinance Loan Foundation, praised the meeting, stating that it has the potential to uplift women’s livelihoods and promote financial independence.

“This initiative is a crucial step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable financial landscape,” she said.

Reserve Bank of Malawi(RBM) Executive Director, Mercy Kumbatira, who graced the meeting, commended the microfinance sector for its efforts, progress, and significant strides in promoting financial inclusion.

She said:”We are committed to supporting initiatives that empower women and promote economic growth.”

The meeting  brought together stakeholders in the microfinance sector to discuss ways to increase financial support for women and promote gender equality.

Author Micah Kanyenda Kamanga releases latest book’Torn Asunder

A female author, Micah Kanyenda Kamanga, based at Dwangwa Trading Centre in Nkhotakota, has released her latest book, titled ‘Torn Asunder’.

In an interview, Kanyenda Kamanga said that the book tells the tale of two lovers, Towera and Steve, whose unwavering affection faces a severe test when Steve becomes entangled in his professional responsibilities.

When asked what motivated her to write the book, she said:”I just wanted to show how much others are willing to endure for their loved ones.”

MACRA ready for physical house, property numbering

Communications Manager for Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Bright Sonani has said the Authority was set to roll out physical house and property numbering exercise in Nkhata Bay District.

He said the exercise was under National Addressing System (NAS) project being implemented in the country.

Speaking on Tuesday during a NAS sensitization meeting in the district, Sonani asked for stakeholder collaboration in sensitizing communities about the exercise.

“We have been implementing the NAS project with several components namely; post codes, street naming, house and property numbering.

“We have solely come to sensitize and inform stakeholders at Nkhata Bay Boma that we are set to embark on physical house and property numbering in the district and any day we will be on the ground,” he added.

Sonani urged local authorities to own the project and be in the forefront in preventing vandalism and theft of the physical NAS structures.

Principal Administration Officer for Nkhata Bay District Council, Moses Jere said the project was critical to development, saying it would improve service delivery and enhance timely response to emergencies.

“For council to do developmental activities, we need to know where people stay or can be found. Issues of response to health, communication, detection of criminal activities will be made easier,” he said.

Senior Chief Nkumbira hailed MACRA for the project, saying it would act as a wakeup call for Nkhata Bay residents and chiefs to start building and allocating plots in line with development plans of the district.

Source of Life Children Foundation Ltd launches K16Mn Water and Sanitation Project in Mchinji

Speaking during the State of the nation address , President Dr Lazarus Chakwera promised that his Government will ensure provision of clean and portable water.

In line with president vision , Source of life children foundation Ltd, on Tuesday commissioned the much awaited water and sanitation project in the area of Wirima Village, Group Village Headman Nkhungulu , Traditional Authority Gumba in Mchinji.

Speaking during the event the Country Representative for the organization, Innocent Semu said he decided to roll out the project in Mchinji after noting that many people were drinking untreated water in the area.

Semu said in line with Sustainable development goal number 6 countries are asked to provide their citizens with clean water.

“But the Government cannot do this alone, we need to come in with such collaborative assistance, ” he said.

Semu said access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is the most basic human need for health and well-being.

He said billions of people world wide will lack access to these basic services in 2030 unless progress quadruples.

He said demand for water is rising owing to rapid population growth, urbanization and increasing water needs from agriculture, industry, and energy sectors.

According to the country representive , the demand for water has outpaced population growth, and half the world’s population is already experiencing severe water scarcity at least one month a year.

He said Water scarcity is projected to increase with the rise of global temperatures as a result of climate change.

“This is why my organization will work hard to ensure access to this vital component,” he said.

Speaking during the function, Traditional Authority Gumba commended Semu and his organisation for the provision of water.

The chief said people in his area have been finding problems to access water.
