Musician ‘Funghie Mutsinze’ releases album of Catholic hymns

Musician-cum-broadcaster ‘Funghie Mutsinze’ has released a brand new album comprising of Catholic hymns titled ‘From the Three Sources Volume One’.

Released on September 20, 2024, this collection of 13 hymns and one bonus song has been masterfully recorded by Felix Ziyade, Jah Knows Dem, Don T, Sispence and J Mass.

Mutsinze told 247 Malawi that the album is deeply rooted in Catholic traditions and he thinks it will help in strengthening the Catholic faith amongst Catholics across the country and beyond.

“As I was recording this album at my studio [Clean Hearts Studios] it was not just Business as usual. As I was reading through and sung the Catholic hymns, I also got inspired and took some lessons from the hymns. I was reminded of the good old days at Montfort demonstration school when the hymns were sang this way. The Catholic teaching is so rich and divine,” said Mutsinze.

Some of the renowned catholic songs in the album include; Ulemu Kwa Mulungu, Ine Ndimvera, Zikomo Ndithu, Atate a Mphamvu Zonse, Tikutamandani and Ndine Mkhristu.

The album has got one bonus track titled ‘Mukhale Ndi Ine’ which is a Chichewa version of a popular Christian hymn ‘Abide With Me’ which was originally done by a Scottish Anglican cleric Henry Francis Lyte in 1847.

UMP, Mibawa TV sign MoU ahead of the UMP Festival  next month

The organisers of the Urban Music People (UMP) Festival and Mibawa Television have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inorder to enhance the festival’s visibility and provide a state-of-the-art sound system.

The signing ceremony of the MoU took place in Blantyre on Friday, September 20, 2024, with Mibawa TV General Manager Tamandani Nkhwimba and UMP Festival Manager Mphatso Junior C Chaluluka representing Mibawa and UMP respectively.

Some of the artists expected to perform at this year’s event include Deep London from South Africa, Naimah from Zambia, Malawi’s international music star Onesimus, Ma Blacks as well as some local and international Djs.

This year’s UMP Festival is expected to take place in Cape Maclear, Mangochi district from 25th to 28th October.

Apart from music performances, this year’s festival which is expected to have an attendance of about 10,000 people, will include fashion shows, sports, philanthropic initiatives and community engagements such as parades and pop-up events.

CCJP urges collective effort to address voter apathy

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) has emphasized the need for collective effort to address voter apathy as the nation prepares for the general elections on September 16, 2025.

CCJP observes that Malawi continues to struggle with voter apathy, referencing recent elections that show a decline in the number of registered voters casting their ballots.

In a statement,CCJP National Coordinator Boniface Chibwana,has urged the government and the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to handle electoral matters transparently ahead of the 2025 elections.

“In the 2019 general elections, although 6,859,570 individuals were registered, only 5,105,983 voted, representing a turnout of 74.43 percent.

“The 2020 fresh presidential election saw a further decline, with only 64.81 percent of registered voters participating.

“Subsequent by-elections in 2021 and 2022 showed even lower turnouts of 43.57 percent and 41.59 percent respectively,” reads part of the statement.

Meanwhile, the commission has challenged Malawians to engage actively in the electoral process to safeguard and strengthen democracy.

Four young boys die in bush fire in Mzimba

On Wednesday, tragedy struck in Mzimba as four young boys lost their lives in a devastating bush fire while hunting for wild animals in the Mbulumbuzi Hill area of Kanjuchi, Traditional Authority(T/A) Khosolo.

The victims were identified as Shaban Nkhoma (11), James Mbewe (15), Denis Mbewe (11), and Misheck Lingison (13).

According to Jenda Police Public Relations Officer Macfarlen Mseteka, the boys had gone hunting after school, a common practice for them, but failed to return home that day.

A search party was launched, and their bodies were found the next day, along with their dog, in the ashes of the bush fire.

A postmortem examination conducted by medical personnel revealed that the cause of death was severe burn wounds.

The boys were from Njilika Village, Traditional Authority Mabulabo in the district.

MOMA project nears completion

The government says it is on track to complete the Mozambique-Malawi Interconnection (MOMA) Project by December this year.

The project, led by the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), has already achieved 69.34% completion.

During a site tour on Wednesday, Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola commended ESCOM for its successful execution of the project and ensured fair compensation for those affected by its implementation.

According to Matola,the project has impacted over 1,000 people, with 31,300 trees destroyed along the 76km stretch in Malawi.

However, on his part, ESCOM Chief Operations Officer, Maxwell Mulimakwenda, highlighted the positive impact on people’s lives, stating that the new shelters built for the affected people have improved their living conditions.

He added that the project has also benefited local communities by constructing 44 houses, 5 boreholes, a health center, a church, a community-based childcare center, school blocks, and planting 52,000 trees and distributing 64,000 fruit trees.
