Govt moves to enable monetisation for Malawian content creators

By Chisomo Phiri

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, Harold Msusa, says the government is committed to creating an enabling environment for Malawian content creators to start earning from their work on global digital platforms.

Msusa made the remarks on Thursday in Lilongwe during a meeting involving the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), officials from Meta Platforms, and local content creators.

He said the government has tasked MACRA to lead the process, emphasising the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure progress is achieved within the set timeframe.

On his part,MACRA Director General(DG), Mayamiko Nkoloma, said the authority has already initiated discussions with Meta, TikTok, and other regulators within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to address existing barriers to content monetisation.

Nkoloma added that Malawi may explore regional solutions through SADC where necessary to accelerate progress.

On his part,Meta’s Head of Public Policy for Southern Africa, Thabo Makenete, explained that successful content monetisation depends on reliable internet connectivity, efficient payment systems, and clear regulatory frameworks.

He further noted that content must meet advertising standards by being engaging, informative, consistent, and compliant with platform community guidelines.

In her remarks, local content creator Mervis Maigwa of ‘Travel with Mervis’  called on MACRA to strengthen engagement with international markets to help unlock the digital economy and enable Malawian creators to earn from their content.

The initiative signals a growing push by government and stakeholders to position Malawi’s creative sector to benefit from the global digital economy.
