Super League clubs to receive K20 million in subvention before the start of 2024 Super League season -Haiya

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Freetwood Haiya has assured delegates at the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) Annual General Meeting (AGM) that the subvention money which he promised Super league clubs, will be available before the start of this year’s TNM Super League season in April.

Haiya was speaking at Sulom’s AGM which is currently underway in Lilongwe.

During the FAM elections campaign trail, Haiya promised Super league teams a minimum of 20 million Kwacha in subvention for each of the 16 clubs in the elite league.

Haiya also hinted that TNM, who are the league’s sponsors will triple the sponsorship money and the announcement will be made on 8th March, 2024

This year’s Sulom AGM is expected to cover a number of issues including confirming Gilbert Mitawa as Sulom’s President following the election of Haiya as FAM President.

Tanzania’s Former President, Ali Hassan Mwinyi dies at 98

Tanzania’s former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi has died at the age of 98.

The death of the former head of State was announced by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Mwinyi, who was the second President of Tanzania, was in office between 1985 and 1995.
He succeeded the founding president, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

Mwinyi died three months before his 99th birthday.

He was hospitalised on February 24 for chest illness.

Mr. Mwinyi was 60 when he took over the presidency in 1985 as the handpicked successor of Mr. Nyerere, who had volunteered to step down after governing his country since its beginnings of independent nationhood as Tanganyika in 1961 and its merger with Zanzibar in 1964 to create the state of Tanzania.

Mwinyi removed restrictions on private enterprise and eased bottlenecks on imports, earning the nickname Mzee Rukhsa, a Swahili phrase which loosely translates to Mr. Permission.

Malawi bans handshaking over conjunctivitis outbreak

Malawi Government through the Ministry of Health has directed an immediate stop to handshaking in the face of the conjunctivitis (pink eye) outbreak.

Malawi’s Health Minister Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda made the directive on Thursday in Zomba at a press briefing on the outbreak of the disease.

Kandodo said the disease transmits rapidly due to poor hygiene, thereby urging all people to avoid sharing towels, shaking hands, and borrowing sunglasses.

Malawi Government through the Ministry of Health has directed an immediate stop to handshaking in the face of the conjunctivitis (pink eye) outbreak.

She said there is fear that the disease may spread countrywide if hygiene principles are not adhered to.

Currently, conjunctivitis has hit Karonga, Nkhatabay, Nkhotakota, and Lilongwe districts with over 800 cases.

Some of the signs and symptoms of the disease include pink or red color in the white part of the eye, swelling of the eye lining, increased tear production, itching, eye discharge, painful eye and visual disturbance.

The disease can be prevented through frequent washing of hands with soap and warm water and avoid touching or rubbing eyes, among others.

Catholic University, Employer Institute, Drill Practitioners on Legal Compliance

The Catholic University of Malawi, in conjunction with the Institute of People Management Malawi (IPMM), has drilled over thirty human resource practitioners in the country on legal compliance.

Speaking at the inaugural opening remarks of the two-day training in Blantyre on Thursday this week, the Director of Academic Affairs, Rev. Fr. Dr. Wilfred Sumani, who is also the Acting Vice Chancellor, urged the participants to take the training seriously, arguing that matters of the law and employment are critical in the country following a wave of people understanding their rights in regards to employment.

Fr. Sumani further commended the partnership that the university has with IPMM in conducting trainings for human resource practitioners in the country on issues that guide their professionalism.

The director of IPMM, Willy Nkhoma, expressed the need for such trainings for human resource practitioners, saying they help them become knowledgeable about both new and amended laws related to employers and employees.
Nkhoma added that human resource practitioners are key to both employers and employees, as they help safeguard the goals of the employer and protect the rights and interests of employees.

He further added that such trainings help professionals address emerging issues by proposing laws that are favourable to both parties.
The human resource practitioners that attended the training are from Daeyang University, the Roads Authority, the Malawi Bureau of Standards, Spark Systems, Mchenga Coal Mine, the Medical Aid Society of Malawi, the Higher Education Students Loans & Grants Board, the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (NRC), Illovo Sugar Malawi, CFAO Motors, Msilikali SACCO, Evidence Action, the National Bank of Malawi, Airtel Malawi, Bhubesi Pride, and the Micro Loan Foundation, just to name a few.

The two-day training has witnessed human resource practitioners being drilled on employment law, the Employment Act, the Labour Relations Act, the Workers Compensation Act, the Pension Act, and occupation safety and health.
 
 

Former MBC journalist Nyokase Madise laid to rest

The body of veteran journalist and former Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Nyokase Florence Madise has been laid to rest yesterday at her home village Mkhulu, Traditional Authority(T/A) Mthwalo in Mzimba.

Madise who was born on April 30, 1939 died on Monday night February 26,2024 in Mzuzu after collapsing at home and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Speaking at the funeral ceremony,one of the veteran broadcasters Pearson Chunga described late Madise as a refined journalist and mother who had a huge impact not only in the broadcasting industry but also in people’s lives.

Another veteran broadcaster Henry Chirwa said Madise was an advisor, hardworker and compassionate woman.

Madise worked as a presenter, reporter and producer for MBC for 30 years (from 1964 to 1994), rising to the position of Assistant Controller in the process.

The BBC Radio-trained Madise was the second female broadcaster to join MBC.

Among others, Madise produced and presented MBC’s vintage programmes such as Song Book Days and Writers Corner.

She also had a stint with Transworld Radio Malawi.
