As the world watches, a war-torn Ukraine continues to produce and export food to countries in need, including Malawi.
This stark reality has left many Malawians questioning their country’s reliance on foreign aid and begging bowl mentality.
The situation is made even more embarrassing by the fact that Malawi’s Vice President, Dr. Michael Usi, recently revealed that President Lazarus Chakwera appointed him due to his expertise in begging. Dr. Usi claimed to have honed his begging skills during his time at ADRA Malawi, leaving many to wonder if the country’s leadership is truly committed to ending the begging culture.
The President’s failure to publicly oppose his Vice President’s statement has led many to believe that he actively sought out a Vice President with begging skills, further perpetuating the country’s reliance on handouts.
“We can’t continue to rely on handouts while other countries, despite facing war and occupation, manage to feed us,” said a concerned citizen. “It’s time for us to pull our socks up and take control of our own destiny.”
Malawi’s prioritization and careless spending have been identified as major obstacles to self-sufficiency.
The country invests heavily in politics and entertainment, neglecting vital sectors like agriculture and industry.
“We need to put politics aside and focus on serious production,” said another Malawian. “We have the potential to be a breadbasket for the region, but our leaders are too busy lining their pockets to care.”
The time has come for Malawi to rise up and take action. It’s time to stop begging and start producing.
The country needs a radical shift in mindset, one that prioritizes self-sufficiency and industrialization.
As one Malawian poignantly put it, “We can’t go any lower than this. We need to stand up and take pride in our nation. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to build a better Malawi.”
