Poor understanding of political parties act fuels violence, handouts – CMD

0

By Jones Gadama

A poor understanding of the Political Parties Act is contributing to the incitement of violence and issuing of handouts among political parties in Malawi, according to the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD). CMD Program Manager Ruth Mthekana made the observation during a meeting with political parties represented in Parliament, aimed at promoting peace ahead of the elections.

The meeting also tackled the issue of voter apathy, which was evident during the voter registration exercise.

Mthekana’s comments highlight the need for political parties to understand and adhere to the provisions of the Political Parties Act, which promotes democratic principles and values.

UTM Regional Governor for the North-North, Dr. Moses Mlenga, attributed the persistence of violence to the lack of action from authorities.

“It’s frustrating to see other parties doing the opposite, with the Registrar of Political Parties failing to take action,” Mlenga said.

However, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Regional Publicity Secretary Khumbo Mwangulu disagreed, saying it’s easy to blame the government when things go wrong.

“People should remember that the government includes both ruling and opposition parties,” Mwangulu said.

He emphasized that promoting peace and ending the culture of handouts is a collective responsibility, requiring continuous awareness for both parties and their supporters.

The meeting underscores the importance of promoting peace and stability in the country, particularly ahead of the elections.

Political parties must work together to create an environment that encourages voter participation and reduces the risk of violence.

The CMD’s efforts to promote peace and democracy are commendable, and it’s essential for all stakeholders to support such initiatives.

By working together, Malawi can ensure that its democratic processes are strengthened, and the country moves towards a more peaceful and stable future.

The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has expressed its grave concern over the arrest of its Vice President for the North Jappie Mhango by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in relation to his tenure as Minister of Transport and Public Works from 2016 to 2017.

Jappie Mhango was arrested by Police on Monday and his arrest raised questions not only by the DPP but many Malawians questioning the timing of his arrest with only 3 months to go before the elections and motivation behind the arrest.

The DPP has expressed its worry that the allegation was committed over 7 years ago and today, the MCP government has become the focus of attention questioning where has the ACB been all this time and why are these allegations being pursued now as the electoral process intensifies?

Namalomba

In a statement dated 3rd June, 2025 signed by its Publicity Secretary Shadric Namalomba, the DPP has further question the MCP led government why they are only arresting opposition members while those in the current Chakwera government remain untouched?

The DPP says Malawians see this arrest not in isolation, but the MCP government’s manufactured witch-hunt-weaponizing agencies like ACB and police to silence its critics of its incompetence lamenting that many DPP officials are on bail without evidence.

The Party says it remains unwavering in its commitment to democracy and will not be cowed by such an action saying it stand resolute in their mission to liberate Malawians from any semblance of authoritarianism and ensures just and fair society for all.

The DPP has called on all of its members, supporters, and the citizens of Malawi to stay united and vigilant saying it is through their collective strength and determination that they will continue to fight for the interests of the nation and its people.

“Together, we will overcome these challenges and ensure Malawi remains a true democracy, reads the statement in part.

A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has warned the MCP and President Chakwera that selective application of justice will take the party to nowhere.

Kamphangala said there are people in the MCP that are corrupt and have benefited a lot from their corruption scheme but the party is shielding them from arrests and prosecutions in court saying time is coming for all these untouchables to be the touchables.

He has assured those corrupt individuals in the MCP that whether it will take long that the MCP continue ruling the country, there will come one day, the party will be ousted from government and the government coming will prosecute all of them in less than 6 months to test the corridors of Maula Prison.

“Today you are being shielded by President Chakwera iand once Chakwera is ousted from government you will have nowhere to run away,” said Kamphangala.

Government faces K95 billion annual burden to hire over 26,000 primary school teachers

The Malawi Government may need at least K95 billion every year to recruit and sustain over 26,000 new primary school teachers.

This estimate comes amid growing pressure to address the chronic teacher shortage in the country’s public primary schools.

Currently, Malawi’s education system is overwhelmed by high learner-to-teacher ratios, with some schools reporting class sizes of over 100 pupils per teacher.

According to education experts, the ideal teacher-pupil ratio should be 1:60, but the reality on the ground remains far from this standard.

The Ministry of Education has acknowledged that while thousands of qualified teachers remain unemployed, limited fiscal space has hindered their absorption into the civil service.

A comprehensive plan to hire and retain 26,284 new teachers would require a long-term financial commitment, with annual expenditures projected at around K95 billion.

This figure includes salaries, training, support services, and infrastructure adjustments necessary to accommodate the expanded workforce.

Government officials have stated that the financial challenge is not only about hiring but also about ensuring the sustainability of these positions in the years to come.

Treasury sources say integrating such a large number of teachers into the wage bill will require a significant reallocation of resources or the introduction of new financing mechanisms.

Stakeholders in the education sector have urged the government to treat the recruitment of teachers as a national emergency, arguing that no meaningful learning can take place in overcrowded classrooms.

Some civil society groups have also called on development partners to assist the government in bridging the funding gap, especially in the short term.

Meanwhile, thousands of trained teachers across Malawi continue to wait for deployment, despite having completed their training years ago.

These unemployed teachers have repeatedly held demonstrations and submitted petitions to Parliament, demanding immediate action.

The teachers argue that the prolonged unemployment not only affects their livelihoods but also contributes to declining educational standards in the country.

As public concern grows, the government now faces the dual challenge of raising the necessary funds and proving its commitment to improving the quality of education in Malawi.

Without decisive action, the dream of delivering quality, inclusive, and equitable education to all Malawian children risks being derailed.

The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the government can marshal the political will and financial resources to address this pressing educational crisis.

Malawi Immigration Department clarifies reasons for South African entry denial

0

By Shaffie A Mtambo

The Malawi Immigration Department has denied claims by Omali Selemani, a Malawian based in South Africa, that he was denied entry into the country due to an invalid Malawi passport.

According to Pasqually Zulu, National Public Relations Officer for Malawi Immigration, Selemani was actually denied entry due to non-payment of a 3,000 Rand fine for overstaying in South Africa.

Zulu explained that it is standard procedure under South African law for individuals who fail to adhere to immigration laws to be denied entry or face deportation.

The Malawi Immigration Department is urging the public to verify information before making claims, as Selemani’s allegations about the invalid passport are unfounded.

Selemani had claimed that he was subjected to torture by South African immigration officials due to the alleged invalid passport and is seeking legal action against the Malawi government.

However, the Immigration Department’s clarification suggests that Selemani’s issues are a result of his own actions, rather than any fault with the passport.

The Malawi Immigration Department is encouraging citizens to ensure they are aware of the requirements and consequences of overstaying or violating immigration laws in foreign countries.
