Dowa District Council’s Acting Chief Planning Officer Yusuf Laki, has expressed concern over some partners that are not attending District executive committee (Dec) meetings describing this tendency as not welcome by the council.

Laki said it is sad to see to it that partners after presenting their projects to the Dec and approved, they disappear meaning that their interest was only to present projects but not to attend meetings urging partners to change.

He appealed to both old and new partners to take Dec meetings seriously by making sure that their respective offices are represented at the Dec by competent people who will report back to the organizations what was transpiring during Dec meetings.

Speaking during a District executive committee meeting held at the boma, Laki appealed to partners implementing their various interventions in the district to always engage government officers in their projects for sustainability purposes.

Laki called on partners to collaborate by working together as one family so that their projects they are implementing be in the interest of the people they serve saying the council expects them to write reports of their projects for knowledge sharing and experiences.

He said partners are required to submit their quarterly reports of their projects to the council’s Monitoring and Evaluation Office for the council to know what and where partners doing in the district to enhance cooperation, transparency and accountability.

“As a district, we need to see what you are doing in the district and for sustainability purposes, once the project come to an end, communities make follow ups with the council, said Laki.

He thanked partners such as World Vision, Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC) and others for doing a commendable work in the district saying they are darling of the communities and this has simplified the work of the council in providing service delivery.

Lingadzi police in Lilongwe have apprehended four suspected armed robbers who were allegedly terrorizing and robbing households in New Area 43.

According to Central West Police Spokesperson Foster Benjamin, the suspects were caught after police received a tip-off about a planned robbery at a construction site in the area.

The police operation led to the arrest of Precious Malipo, 20, Duncan Charles, 21, and Khumbo Makwinja, 27, all from Mgona township, along with James Ngwenya, who was shot in the stomach while attempting to snatch an officer’s rifle. Ngwenya is currently receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

The suspects, along with other gang members who are still at large, were allegedly involved in a series of robberies targeting households and businesses in the city.

The police operation was swift and strategic, with officers manning the scene and preventing the suspects from escaping.

This arrest is part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat rising cases of theft and armed robbery in Lilongwe.

In a similar incident earlier this year, Lingadzi police arrested 12 suspected armed robbers linked to a series of crimes in Areas 25 and 43, among other locations.

The police recovered crucial evidence, including a pistol and stolen property, and are continuing investigations to determine if the group has connections to other unsolved crimes.

The police have urged residents and business owners to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help prevent further crimes.

With these arrests, the police aim to reassure the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order in the city.

The suspects are currently in police custody, and further investigations are underway to determine the full extent of their involvement in various crimes.

The police are working to build a strong case against the suspects, who will face formal charges in court.

The arrest of these suspects brings relief to residents in the affected areas, who had been living in fear due to the rampant crimes. The police’s proactive approach in combating crime is a step towards ensuring the safety of communities in Lilongwe.

Government mulls lifting ban on scrap metal exports with conditions

The Ministry of Trade is considering lifting the ban on the exportation of scrap metals, but with certain conditions in place.

According to the Minister of Trade, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, the government wants to ensure that Malawians can conduct business without suffocating the economy.

In a recent interview with this publication Minister Mumba said that scrap metal dealers have been asked to list down items that are a source of vandalism, such as copper and manholes, which will not be included in the exportation.

Mumba

This move aims to strike a balance between promoting trade and preventing the vandalism of critical infrastructure.

The ban on scrap metal exports was initially imposed due to the rampant vandalism of copper cables and other items, which was threatening the national development agenda.

The Ministry of Trade had revoked the exportation of scrap metals under the Control of Goods (Import and Export License) regulations.

Minister Mumba’s proposal suggests that the government is willing to revisit the ban and explore ways to promote the scrap metal industry while minimizing the risks associated with vandalism.

The move is likely to have a positive impact on the business community, particularly scrap metal dealers who have been affected by the ban.

However, the government will need to ensure that the conditions for exportation are strictly enforced to prevent the vandalism of critical infrastructure.

The listing of specific items that will be excluded from exportation is a step in the right direction, and it will be important to monitor the implementation of these regulations to ensure that they are effective in preventing vandalism.

Overall, the proposed lifting of the ban on scrap metal exports with conditions is a welcome development for the business community.

It remains to be seen how the government will implement these regulations and ensure that the scrap metal industry contributes to the country’s economic growth without compromising national development.
