Malawi Mozambique bilateral relationship grows as Trade and Energy MOU is signed

Malawi and Mozambique on Wednesday signed crucial Memorandums of Understanding (MOU), aimed at improving the energy sector and boosting trade of the two countries.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, which took place at the Office of the President of Mozambique in Maputo, President Lazarus Chakwera said the signing of the trade agreements between Malawi and Mozambique is key in enhancing the economic relationship between Malawi and Mozambique.

“I am optimistic that the opening up of the Nacala Port to transport fuel and petroleum products from Mozambique to Malawi will reduce transportation costs of petroleum products and  the energy agreement will also reduce black outs,” Chakwera said.

President Chakwera together with his  counterpart President Filipe Nyusi witnessed the signing ceremony of the MOU’s on energy  formalised by Energy Ministers of Malawi and Mozambique.

Under the agreements, Malawi seeks to negotiate for a convenient border post, simplified trade regimes, equal treatment of transporters, and tightened security to reduce the crossing of borders using unchartered roots.

President Chakwera said it was pleasing to note that Malawi and Mozambique bilateral ties are now stronger than ever, a development that is beneficial to the people of Mozambique and Malawi.

In his remarks, President Nyusi said the two countries will collaborate to ensure the agreements become practical so that the people of the two countries benefit.

“Key sectors that are crucial to the development of our two countries have been thoroughly scrutinised such as agriculture, energy and transport, much focus has been given to the transport and energy sector,” he explained.

Nyusi mentioned that the Government of Mozambique will continue supporting the joint project of construction of the 218-kilometre Malawi-Mozambique Interconnector Project and Matambo Substation as part of the Mozambique-Malawi Interconnection Project (MOMA).

The Mozambican President expressed dismay at the current trade volumes between Malawi and Mozambique which are relatively low despite the proximity of major commercial and industrial hubs of the two countries.

“I can confidently say that we have allocated a space at Nacala Port for Malawi to be spearheading transportation of products to minimize traffic and cargo taking too long to reach Malawi,” he said.

On this point Nyusi revealed that a one stop boarder post will be operationalized at Mwanza boarder in Malawi to further boost trading activities between the two countries.

While in Mozambique President Chakwera was taken on a learning visit to Boane district to appreciate industrial activities at Beluluane Industrial Park.

The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Social and Community Affairs, Savel Kafwafwa, has emphasised the importance of harmonising social support and livelihood programmes as a key strategy to effectively alleviate poverty.

Kafwafwa made the remarks during the committee’s visit to Ntchisi District, where they evaluated the implementation of the Social Cash Transfer Programme.

“We would like the councils to integrate these programmes to maximise their impact on beneficiaries,” Kafwafwa stated.

During their time in Ntchisi, the members of Parliament visited two households that are beneficiaries of the programme to hear firsthand how the programme is impacting their lives.

“As a committee, we have noted that despite revising the amounts the beneficiaries receive, these rates are still on the lower side,” Kafwafwa observed.

He also expressed satisfaction with the programme’s outcomes, highlighting that it has embedded skills in savings and loans, enabling beneficiaries to multiply their earnings.

One of the beneficiaries, Elida Mvula, attributed her success to the skills she gained through savings and loans initiatives via COMSIP.

“Through these groups, I have been able to multiply my earnings, buy goats and pigs, and start a small business that has transformed my life,” she said.

The committee’s visit underscores the importance of accountability and oversight in the management of social support programmes.

Social commentator Isaiah Emmanuel Sunganimoyo who for years has been preaching on issues of politics, religion and culture in his teaching, has announced joining frontline politics as an aspiring independent presidential candidate for 2025 elections.

The announcement by Sunganimoyo is good news to his followers in various social media platforms and bad news to others who thought that he will be preaching more about politics, religion and culture forever.

Sunganimoyo said he has spoken enough for people to change their mindset and time has now come for those that have changed mindset to join the journey in a quest for a better Malawi that has been lacking in the country ruled by political party presidents.

Speaking through a video clip circulating in various social media platforms, Sunganimoyo has thanked God for his wisdom and good health that has made him draft a visionary Constitution containing the wishes and aspirations of Malawians and the country to the agenda 2063.

Sunganimoyo said it is a pleasure that the National Planning Commission has recognized him with a Certificate of Compliance that his manifesto has a vision of transforming lives of the vulnerable people on their journey to 2063.

He said he has made up his mind to compete for the race as an independent presidential candidate after taking note for years that political party leaders have been taking the citizens for granted, using their education to fool the citizens to advance their political agendas.

The social commentator said standing as an independent [presidential candidate will give chance to Malawians to weigh out the previous party leaders on what they have done to the country and the citizens.

He said he has written a 78- page book of his manifesto which took him 3 weeks so that it can contain the wishes and aspirations minus political parties giving him confidence that Malawi needs fresh blood, people of new ideas to change the country to prosperity.

“I have written the manifesto by myself and no one can claim to have supported me, there’s potential in me as an independent presidential candidate to change Malawi to the better,” said Sunganimoyo.

He expressed hope and trust that those who God have given them wealthy to change Malawi through other people like him, will support him in the run-up to the 2025 elections through their vehicles, printing of T-shirts, Zitenje’s and bronchures to share to reach out to as many Malawians as possible to read his manifesto.

Sunganimoyo has finally advised those wishing for a better Malawi to join him on the journey and those that are not happy with the concrete decision he has reached to join other political parties of their choice assuring all that he will be available on face book, Instagram, Tik-Tok and U-Tube to answer all questions about the future of the country.

Engineer Mumba signs musician ‘Amidu Ellani’

Renowned politician cum businessman, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba has signed up and coming musician Amidu Ellani Monjeza popular for his hit song “Udikirebe”.

The musician made the announcement through his Facebook page on Wednesday evening saying Mumba has already sponsored his first album which is expected to be released soon.

“There are people that are selfless and just want to help others realize their dreams. The big assignment he has left me with today after our chat on the way forward with my music is: Define yourself and your music. Will it be inspirational music to those that are struggling in life or will it be about something else?” Reads the statement in part.

The singer has since advised people to contact his friend Malumbo Ngwira for bookings and anything to do with his music.

The youthful musician was recently seen working closely with renowned musician “Lawi” and renowned entrepreneur Rodwell Lumbe raising speculations that the two were about to sign the artist who is currently doing his studies at the University of Malawi.

The news of engineer Mumba signing the artist came as a surprise to many  but Lawi has clarified that he had no contract with Ellani and that he wishes him well in his music journey.

“This is a professional decision and a wonderful development, we are very happy for Amidu. The support he has received is what we would like to witness more for up and coming artists and the arts in Malawi. From Malume at Lawi Group and Rodwell from The Citizen, we wish Amidu and his new management all the best in future endeavors,” reads Lawi’s Facebook post.

Amidu Ellani Monjeza became popular in November last year after renowned singer, Driemo, shared a video clip on Facebook in which he was captured singing along with his friend Malumbo  who was playing a guitar.
