NBS Bank Plc has lived by its promise to continue to sponsor the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) War Veterans Thanksgiving golf tournament by being the headline sponsor for the fourth year in a row

The Bank, through its Chief Executive Officer Kwanele Ngwenya made a promise last year that it will ‘forever’ support the golf tournament as long as the Bank exists in the country.

This year, NBS Bank is the headline sponsor for the War Veterans Thanksgiving Golf tournament slated for Saturday 4 November 2023 at Lilongwe Golf Club where President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to tee off to start the tournament.

NBS Bank Head of Marketing and Customer Experience, Tamanda Ng’ombe said as a ‘Caring Bank’, they felt the need to commit more to the cause especially after noting that this year the golf tournament is aimed at raising funds to refurbish the memorial homes for veterans in Zomba.

“As the Caring Bank, we are playing our part in caring for our veterans by being patriotic and ensuring that our veterans have secure and safe housing. This is the fourth time NBS Bank is the anchor sponsor and we plan on doing the same every year,” said Ng’ombe.

Last year, the Bank pumped in K10 million towards Veterans and Ex-Service League of Malawi, VELOM, and K20 million towards the tournament making them the anchor sponsor of the tournament. The Bank also committed to offering financial solutions to MDF retirees.

MDF spokesperson, Major Emmanuel Mlelemba commended NBS Bank for their support towards war veterans and also indicated that all is set for the tournament which targets to raise K100 million.

“We are very prepared. We wrote to various individuals and companies for sponsorship and we got a positive response. So far, we have 70 golfers and 35 teams that have registered and confirmed their participation. This year we really plan to renovate the war veterans’ houses in Zomba which requires a lot of money,” said Mlelemba in an interview.

President Chakwera

The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (Mvac) annual food security assessment results shows that the current projection represents a 15 percent increase compared to the previous consumption period when 3.9 million people faced hunger.

The results came at a time there is maize scarcity on the market which has led some traders to sell a 50 kilogramme bag of the staple grain at prices ranging from K30 000 to K40 000.

Reads Mvac’s results: “In order to protect livelihoods, the vulnerable population will require humanitarian food assistance that has been estimated at 219,023 metric tonnes [MT] of maize with an estimated cash value of K167.55 billion.

“The food assistance will be required for a period ranging from two to six months.”

Out of the estimated food insecure population, 470 000 are from the four cities of Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe and Mzuzu while 3.9 million are from rural areas across the country.

The good news is that Government has already intervened and people are receiving maize while some are receiving cash.

Umodzi Party(UP) president Professor John Chisi and former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice president for Central Region Zeliah Chakale have today joined the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The welcoming ceremony of the two politicians and others is being held at MCP headquarters in the capital Lilongwe.

In his remarks, Chisi, whose party is already in the Tonse Alliance, says developments President Lazarus Chakwera is implementing are there for all to see.

“Time is now for us to unite for the sake of this country. This is what the president was preaching yesterday at Umodzi Day. You know, people without vision cannot run this country,” says Chisi.

On her part Chakale says she is back on her political base; adding she has been moved by Chakwera’s restructuring of the Lilongwe City and other infrastructures.

Chikale resigned as DPP veep last month, citing personal reasons.

“My Vice President position in the DPP was only for me to fight others. It made me to create more enemies. I saw no reason to continue on that path,” she claims.

Among others who have also announced joining the Malawi’s first political party are Moreen Issa and Chikumbutso Sinsamala from DPP.

According to MCP General Secretary Eisenhower Mkaka, those who have announced joining MCP today are just few from those who are wishing to do so anytime.

Mkaka has however, asked MCP long time members to welcome the new ones with a smile and stay with them ever.
