By Mary Makhiringa

There was jubilation and excitement on Saturday at St. Peter’s Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Balaka when the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) launched the construction of an Information  Communication Technology (ICT) lab at the institution.

Teachers, parents and students alike from the school and surrounding areas of Sub Traditional Authority (STA) Matola in Balaka North Constituency gathered at the school to witness the historic occasion marking the start of new life in the area.

MACRA has embarked on the Connect-a-school project whereby 75 ICT laboratories will be constructed in schools across the country with each district receiving two during this first phase.

Tony Ngalande checking the construction plan

Speaking during the launch, Member of Parliament for Balaka North, Tony Ngalande hailed the initiative, saying it would increase the confidence of learners at the school and enrich them with computer skills.

“As a leader, my duty is to encourage possible investors as well as developers to come forward and help us as MACRA has done. This ICT lab will help in bridging the ICT gap that our learners especially those coming from the rural areas have.

“We are now seeing the Malawi 2063 taking shape as the world is going digital, having an ICT lab in this rural area is a positive step forward as you know if you cannot operate a computer you are considered to be way behind,” he said.

Ngalande assured the community that he would always be available during the implementing period of the project so that the structure meets the required standard considering that the facility was meant for the learners who would take over from him in developing the area.

MACRA Broadcasting Service Manager, Matilda Bande said the project was funded by Universal Service Fund whose aim was to have equal access to information services.

“Schools irrespective of where they are ought to access internet services and they have the much needed facilities, we are coming from the background of tele-centres which targeted the community in general and did not work.

“In these ICT labs, we are targeting the pupils so that we grow the generation that will know how to use the internet that is why we would like to reach out to them while they are young so that when we bring back the tele-centres in future we will now have a catchment,” she said.

Bande disclosed that each school will be given 20 computers for a start and within the project, each school will have 60 computers with free internet provision for three years.

Head Teacher of St. Peter’s CDSS, Sister Regina Komicho noted that the project apart from imparting computer skills to learners, would help in enhancing learning and teaching of different subjects as leaners would be free to search for information on the internet.

“Let me register my profound gratitude to the Ministry of Education for considering our school to be in the first phase of this project, this means a lot as we have now seen that our school is regarded,” she added.

Enough is enough: DPP condemns Tonse Alliance for retrogressive actions against activists

In a letter written and signed by presidential and party spokesperson Shadric Namalomba, the Democratic Progressive Party has strongly condemned the Tonse Alliance administration  for its crackdown on activists, in particular the arrest of Edward Kambanje, a human rights leader who is calling for an investigation into the alleged corruption involving finance minister, Simplex Chithyola and her daughter.

The DPP says these actions by the current  regime are retrogressive, barbaric and undemocratic with an intention of suppressing criticism and opposition against looting public resources.

“Malawians have not forgotten the MCP brutality and terror during the 30 years of one party state. Our fathers and mothers quotes and defeated this old dictatorial regime of  MCP. We believed we could freely express ourselves our thoughts and feelings of frustration pain and all disapproval against any state inhumanity and impunity. We hope that we could freely get our leaders to account for the power given to them to rule over us. This was so until regrettably they coming in of MCP with each leader Chakwera in 2020,” part of the letter reads.

The DPP has said they further wish to register their utmost regret and frustration at the Malawi Police Service which is now on a spree of dereliction of its core duty of protecting Malawians regardless of their color, political affiliation or region.

The Inspector General of police has been called upon to introspect and ask herself the difficult questions the kind of legacy she would love to leave behind. Under her watch, the opposition has seen an increase of political violence perpetrated by MCP zealots which Malawi police chooses not to bring to book.

In its statement, the DPP is calling for the immediate release of Kambanje. At the same time, the DPP has called for the anti-corruption bureau and all law enforcing authorities in the country need to hide under the carpet available in the unsubstantiated of the Minister and her daughter.

” It is imperative to stress that Malawi is undergoing a revolution that not even those in power can stop it. Malawians are sick and tired of a regime that mercilessly rules with impunity. Malawians are heading a silent revolution that will unearth the regime in power out of its grip in September 2025. A better Malawi is possible with APM and the DPP come 2025 !”

Human rights activist Edward Kambanje, who was arrested Friday evening, was transferred to Lilongwe Police Station under heavy police presence.

According to eyewitnesses, a convoy of police vehicles was seen leaving Blantyre Police Station, with Kambanje in custody.

The transfer is believed to be an attempt to silence Kambanje, who has been vocal in exposing corruption and demanding accountability from government officials.

In a thrilling match at Kamuzu Stadium, Silver Strikers pulled off a shocking victory over Nyasa Big Bullets with a last-minute goal from Chinsinsi Maonga.

The match seemed destined to end in a goalless draw until Maonga’s first touch of the ball in added time found the back of the net.

Under the leadership of Peter Mponda, Silver Strikers proved to be unstoppable as they outplayed their opponents in front of a massive crowd of spectators.

Bullets Vs Silver Strikers

Mponda’s tactical changes paid off as he brought on Maonga, who ultimately became the match-winner.

Former Big Bullets coach, Calisto Pasuwa, now in charge of the opposition team, acknowledged the tough loss and praised Mponda’s strategy.

“We concede defeat, you know in football anything happens.

We will see and rectify some areas,” Pasuwa commented after the match.

However, the Big Bullets supporters were not as gracious in defeat, as some were seen pelting stones at their own team’s coach bus in frustration.

Despite the disappointment, both teams now look ahead to their next matches with Silver Strikers riding high on their recent victory.
