Puma Energy Malawi launches first Le Croissant cafe in Blantyre

Puma Energy Malawi on Saturday June 1,2024, launched its first Le Croissant cafe at its Chichiri Service Station in Blantyre, demonstrating its continued commitment to providing convenience, product diversity, reliability and quality of service to its customers.

The opening of the outlet follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Le Croissant, a local, Malawian brand, earlier this year to open three Le Croissant café outlets at Puma Energy Malawi service stations.

Speaking in an interview, Puma Energy General Manager(GM) Sipho Uaeca said the partnership reflects Puma Energy Malawi’s confidence in the Le Croissant brand.

He said:”This also reflects our commitment to supporting local businesses and collaboration in the private sector to create jobs and sustain livelihoods.”

Serendib Hotels and Resorts chairperson said: “Our Le Croissant is a local brand. This first venture into the ‘on the go’ café business is an extension of our long-term investment into the Malawian economy and the people of our country.

“We are proud to partner with Puma Energy Malawi as we extend our brand across the country.
This partnership marks another milestone in delivering quality services to Puma customers and opens a new gateway to hospitality.”

Le Croissant, a specialist pastry, confectionery and bakery brand, is a division of Heritage Hotel, which was established in 1958 as Shire Highlands.

It is under the Serendib Hotels and Resorts brand and employs over 800 people.  

Puma Energy plans to further expand the partnership to its stations in Lilongwe and Mzuzu.

Le Croissant, which serves over 1 200 customers per day with over 20 products, is an employer of young culinary talent.

Sulom condemns violence during Bullets,Silver game

The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has condemned the acts of violence that occurred during Sunday’s match between defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and TNM Super League leaders Silver Strikers at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

The match between the two sides ended violently, following a Silver Strikers goal that was scored by substitute Chinsinsi Maonga towards the end of the match.

In a statement released on Sunday evening, Sulom says the stoning incident that happened is unacceptable and goes against the spirit of sportsmanship and the values that it uphold in the league



Sulom further assured stakeholders including players, fans and officials that it will not tolerate such behavior and disciplinary action will be taken against the perpetrators.

“Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against those responsible  in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations.

SULOM is committed to ensuring the safety and security of everyone involved at the Super League matches and will work closely with law enforcement to investigate this incident thoroughly,” reads the statement in part.

The Super League body has therefore called on football fans to maintain peace, showing respect for each other and the sport.

The statement further reads, “The Super League of Malawi remains dedicated to promoting a safe and enjoyable environment for all participants in the beautiful game.”

The irate fans smashed Silver Strikers Coaster and damaged other items after referee Gift Chiko ended the match prematurely following the eruption of the violence.

Flames coach ‘Mabedi’ names a 26-man squad ahead of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Malawi national football team ‘Flames’ coach Patrick Mabedi has released names of a 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Sao Tome and Equatorial Guinea.

Flames will host São Tomé and Príncipe at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Thursday June 6, before flying out to Malabo the following day to face Equatorial Guinea on Monday June 10.

President Chakwera mourns Brian Ng’oma

The Malawi leader President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Sunday joined thousands of Malawians in mourning the late Brian Ng’oma who was brother to the Minister of Homeland Security, Dr Ken Zikhale Ng’oma.

Delivering the condolence message on behalf of Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General Elsenhower Mduwa Mkaka said the President was so suddened and
devastated  with the death.

He said this is fourth person who has died following the death of three others within two month.

Paul Ng’oma , son to Ken Zikhale Ng’oma said the family has really been affected with the demise of their young.

He said memories are still fresh following the demise of their three relations.

He gave an example that on 8 May, 2024 the family also lost Gibson Chilela, uncle to Ken Zikhale Ng’oma.

It was only few days when he also lost his first born daughter Cynthia .

These death shocked traditional Authority Malengamzoma of Nkhata-bay district who  described the demise of  Gibson Chilela, an uncle to the Minister of Homeland Security Dr Kenneth Zikhale as a big loss, saying that  late Chilela was a pillar and custodian of Tonga culture.

The Chief said,  late Chilera was someone who was passionate about respecting and preserving the Tonga culture.

He further pointed out that late Chilera left a gap because his knowledge and wisdom was iconic in ensuring unity in his chieftainship.

Late Gibson Chilera died at the age of 92 and the body was laid to rest in Nkhata-bay district.

Late Brian Ng’oma has survived by a wife and four children. He has since been laid to rest today at Area 18 cemetery.

TRANSFORM contributes to sustainable agricultural transformation in Dowa

TRANSFORM Nutrition, an agricultural project being implemented by a consortium-Norwegian Diversity, Norwegian Church and the Development Fund, says the project has improved knowledge on nutrition and care practices in Dowa district.

The project has established and revamp nutrition care groups, training cluster leaders and promoters on nutrition and care practices and providing working materials to promoters such as bicycles as a key achievement.

Briefing the District executive Committee in Dowa, Dowa District Council’s Principal Nutrition, HIV and AIDS Noel Chikumbu, said TRANSFORM Nutrition has a project goal of contributing to sustainable agricultural transformation that will result in improved incomes, food and nutrition security among smallholder farmers in Malawi.

Chikumbu said the overall objective of the project is to strengthen local food systems and sustainable improvement of food and nutrition security, income and resilience to climate change among 35,000 agriculture dependent rural households within selected EPAs in Dowa district by 2025.

He said the project has targeted vulnerable groups such as households with pregnant women, Under-Five children and lactating mothers saying at least 60 percent of households in the district are eating 3 meals per day and 95 percent of households have access to clean and safe water.

The officer said TRANSFORM Project has trained households in food budgeting and seasonal availability calendar, facilitating trainings in integrated homestead farming and training in preservation and food safety.

“The project has increased access to nutrient dense foods, trained 120 Lead Farmers, Promoters and VAT in nutrition and care practices and 600 follower farmers trained in food budgeting and meal planning,” said Chikumbu.

He said the project has increased consumption of safe, nutritious and diverse food saying 8,652 households have backyard gardens and fruit trees to promote the consumption of readily available nutritious vegetables and 4,184 fruit trees (mangoes and oranges) procured and distributed to 836 households.

Chikumbu said beside the project registering success stories in the district, it is meeting challenges such as behavior change interventions which taking time and inadequate Nutrition Frontline workers at the community level.

He said going forward, the project is developing a seasonal availability calendar, food processing and preservation, food hygiene and safety and conducting an assessment on household dietary practices using a dietary diversity scorecard which will give an overall picture in consumption of diverse foods at household level in the district.

The officer said the project will identify and train male nutrition champions to enhance gender integration in food and nutrition issues and continued support on job capacity building of extension workers at community level and nutrition related structures.
