Malawi’s Former Vice President from 2004 to 2009 and the leader for Assembly for Democracy and Development (ADD) Cassim Chilumpha says most of the challenges rocking Malawi are man-made.

Chilumpha, made the remarks at a political rally his party held at Lunzu Catholic Primary School ground in Blantyre on Sunday.

Among others, the former Veep singled out food insecurity and corruption as some of the major challenges dragging Malawi behind in terms of development.

Chilumpha

On food insecurity,he said most of small-scale farmers in the country do not afford farm inputs, like fertilizer, which affects their farm yields a thing which contributes to national food insecurity.

Chilumpha also accused authorities in the current Tonse Alliance administration for being too rhetorical on the fight against corruption saying the trend is fueling the vice in the country.

He said there is need to find lasting solutions to the challenges that are affecting the country’s development.

He however, demanded the Tonse Alliance government to step down; arguing it has failed.

“I have the answers to all the challenges and will be dealt with come 2025 and beyond,” he promised though his party is yet to have a serious national impacts.

Chilumpha fell short of explaining how he intends to deal with these problems if elected as state president.

Other speakers at the rally also took turns in accusing the current regime of failing to manage state affairs and giving the country a right direction towards transformation.

For instance, ADD treasurer general Iman Khan argued Chilumpha is among the pioneers of Malawi’s democracy with vast experience in running state affairs.

“He also managed to deal with load-shedding and lack of fuel during his ministerial time as minister of energy and mining respectively during Joyce Banda’s era, “said Khan.

Chilumpha and businessman Yusuf Matumula were arrested in May 2006 on allegations of hiring assassins from South Africa to assassinate former president late Bingu wa Mutharika.

Bingu and Chilumpha fell out in 2005 after the former had left the United Democratic Front(UDF) , a party that sponsored him into power in 2004, to form his Democratic Progressive Party(DPP).

But after 17 years of waiting for his fate, High Court discharged him unconditionally from his treason case in October this year.

In her ruling dated October 18, 2023, Judge Ruth Chinangwa argued that the State had showed no willingness to prosecute the matter having remained dormant for over 15 years.

He said this time around the priority is to concentrate on areas where there is a huge gap in terms of traveling from one place to another.

Malawians are waiting with abated breath to hear from courts on a case in which some Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members have dragged Mutharika to court over the 13 December NGC meeting.

Kondwani Nankhumwa and Cecilia Chazama wants the High Court to nullify resolutions which the party made at the Peter Mutharika-led National Governing Council (NGC) meeting in Mangochi.

Nankhumwa and Chazama who were recently fired as DPP vice president for the south and director of women respectively made an application before the High Court in Lilongwe.

Nankhumwa

At the Mangochi meeting, Mutharika and other NGC members resolved that the party should hold an elective convention on 26th and 27th December, 2023.

Nankhumwa and Chazama were among NGC members who did not attend the meeting.

In their application, they are seeking a nullification of the proceedings and resolutions for the Mangochi meeting until their application is heard and a determination is made before the court.

They also want the court to stop Mutharika from removing Nankhumwa from his position of party vice president for the south and Chazama from the position of National Director of Women. The two were elected on the positions at the party’s convention in 2018 but Mutharika fired them last week and appointed replacements.

Chazama and Nankhumwa have also asked the court to stop Clement Mwale from exercising powers and functions of DPP secretary general. Mwale was appointed to the position after Mutharika fired Grezelder Jeffrey and assigned her the position of DPP vice president for the central.

Many Malawians are accusing Mutharika of lacking leadership skills. Mutharika is well known for lacking decision making skills.

The good example is when he was Minister of Education when lecturers from chancellor College held a sit-in for nearly half a year.

Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda has hailed President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for his decision to increase Constituency Development Fund (CDF) from K29 Million to K100 Million.

Addressing a rally at Kanyenje Primary School in Dowa East constituency, Chimwendo Banda popularly known as “Bulldozzer” said his area has experienced tangible developments with the money received.

He gave an example of six school blocks which have been handed over to the community for use.

Not only that, the Minister cited other development projects like health and national security.

“I think for a long time, the name CDF has not been welcomed in the country. It was associated with abuse, associated with selfishness, associated with corruption, but things are changing. I’m not saying that we don’t have issues anymore. But if you go out there you’ll find that CDF has made tremendous contributions in development,” said Chimwendo Banda.

Chimwendo Banda said CDF is bearing fruits because of a new set of guidelines which have been strengthened to avoid abuse of the money.

“We have improved our monitoring we have challenged ourselves to be audited each and every time. But at the same time there is more transparency and accountability with the use of CDF that has really helped.

“Government is working to tighten one or two issues, but as a Minister for Local Government, I can assure you that the CDF is able now to address critical matters under the leadership of President Dr Lazarus Chakwera,” he said.

He added: “The mere fact that His Excellency the President has increased the CDF from 29 million to 100 million. Now at least Members of Parliament, counselors and government committees are able to take bigger projects other than smaller ones. That’s why we are able to see the impact. It’s our hope that our CDF grows, accountability and transparency also grow. We are not going to sit down but to continuously monitor the usage of public resources to strengthen accountability and transparency so that things are done in the right manner,” he said.
