Human rights activist Ben Longwe says Malawi Kwacha secretly drops by another 13 percent

By Vincent Gunde

Just only two weeks after the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) announced a 44 percent devaluation of the Malawi Kwacha, human rights activist based in South Africa Charles Ben Longwe, says the Kwacha has again secretly lost its value by 13 percent.

In an interview with 247 Malawi News, Longwe said the Malawi Kwacha has been devalued by 57 percent within a period of 3 weeks describing this as time out for President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to change things in Malawi but continuing destroying Malawi.

Charles Ben Longwe

He said after the announcement of the 44 percent devaluation, the exchange rate for one US Dollar was being bought at K1,700 and starting from the November 2, 2023 the exchange rate has moved to k1,900.

Longwe said it is not a surprise that some other groups of civil servants have pegged the devaluation to be at 100 percent a development which is worrisome and a regret to have voted for a wrong government.

He said in one or two weeks to come, the Malawi Kwacha will again lose its value to one American Dollar meaning that Malawians must bless themselves for tougher times advising the citizens not expect the Kwacha to regain its value anytime soon.

He said he do not find it proper for Malawi First going to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for funding when they know pretty well that President Chakwera has failed to govern Malawians in the interest of all and that that his servant leadership has been proved to be zero.

The Activist said Chakwera is not worthy to be the President of Malawi arguing that he does not know what to do in Government saying the only solution for him is to resign honourably or to be forced to resign to pave way for others to lead the country.

He said with the promised funding for Chakwera to change things and not resigning, there will be propagandas against him, assuring Malawians that time is out for President Chakwera to fix the country’s economy.

“The way how Malawi has reached, there is no way Chakwera can change things, he has failed in his three-year rule as President of Malawi,” said Longwe.

Ben Longwe said Malawi has no Public Affairs Committee (PAC) claiming that Malawians who are patriotic to their country will mobilize each other to close PAC offices located at the City Centre in Lilongwe for the men of God to join frontline politics.

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera led administration continues to get overflowing favour from the donor community due to its prudent public financial management.

Gone are the days when Capital Hill used to manipulate figures to hoodwink the global lender – International Monetory Fund (IMF).

It is not surprising therefore that the United Nations (UN) has trusted the Chakwera administration with a five year, US$1.7 billion cooperation framework which will go towards accelerated achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Malawi’s national development priorities.

Zamba signing the deal

The deal was signed on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking during the ceremony, Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Colleen Zamba said the signing of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for Malawi 2024-2028 marks a new beginning, expressing optimism for meaningful transformation in the years ahead.

“We have much work ahead on this collective journey to uplift the lives and hopes of all Malawians and I want to re-affirm government’s commitment to the cooperation framework.

“I also wish to recognise the extensive collaboration between the Government of Malawi and the UN country team who have worked hard for the past year to shape this ambitious yet achievable roadmap aligning to Malawi 2063 and medium-term development plans,” said Zamba.

She said the framework clearly articulates integrated solutions across four priority areas requiring continued partnership including sustainable, diversified and inclusive economic growth, strengthened institutional governance; sustainable investments in human capital development and climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability.

In her remarks, UN representative in Malawi, Rebecca Ada Donto stated that the framework, which already has approximately $600 million allocated, will significantly contribute to realizing Malawi’s 2063 agenda, especially in areas such as education, health, and climate change adaptation.

Emulate your superiors to succeed – Chakwera advises graduating MDF senior command and staff

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has called on the newly graduated Malawi Defence Force (MDF) senior command and staff to always lead by examples of their superiors if they are to succeed in their vacation as soldiers.

Chakwera who is Malawi Defence Force Commander In – Chief made the remarks on Friday 24th November, 2023 at the graduation of MDF senior command and staff in Salima.

In his remarks, the Malawi leader emphasized that it is those who go through life and approach their work without any examples and models to anchor, challenge and ground them that often flounder, while those who have such anchors tend to flourish.

He advised the men in uniform to always lead by example of their superiors saying their leadership is the parachute that guarantees a safe landing when all other measures fail.

“If you want to succeed in your vocation as soldiers and if you wish to put your training to good use, follow closely the noble examples of those that lead you and lead those who come behind you by example. That is not just a good principle to follow in battle. It is a good principle to follow in life, which is itself a kind of battlefield. It is those who go through life and approach their work without any examples and models to anchor, challenge, and ground them that often flounder, while those who have such anchors tend to flourish,” said the president.

“I know that this philosophy is counter-cultural and counterintuitive, for we live in a time where everyone is made to believe that it is no use having heroes that inspire us because the only hero worth having is yourself. But this is naïve at best and the world is littered with fallen soldiers who have suffered needless defeat in the pursuit of heroics that were divorced from the wisdom, example and instruction of seasoned generals. So, I implore you to escape this fate. You have a rich heritage of noble and formidable examples and you must not allow anyone to exploit you to the point of making you despise that heritage for to do so is to do harm to yourself by removing the nourishing roots from the tree of your life.”

MEC’s silence on electoral irregularities reports worries Jumah

Pioneer of Mindset Change Project Bantu Saunders Jumah, has expressed his grave concern over the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) silence on reported electoral irregularities calling for the establishment of Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to preside over the 2025 elections.

Jumah observes that there have been reported reports on registration of minors as voters in Mangochi and Dedza where an independent candidate, Jacob Kaumphawi penned the electoral body’s Chairperson Judge Dr. Chifundo Kachale to investigate the electoral irregularities claiming that all these matters were put under the carpet.

Bantu Saunders Jumah

He feels the MEC is closing its ears and eyes on irregularities reported raising fears that the same is body preparing to preside over the tense during the 2025 elections where electoral irregularities will reach the climax.

Speaking through his face book page widely followed by millions of people in Malawi and Africa, Jumah has however, advised Kachale not to side with criminals for him to be trusted by all Malawians that he is more than ready to handle the 2025 elections.

He observes that Kachale’s silence to act on the electoral irregularities by the opposition camps is speaking for itself that he is siding with government and it is not wrong to suspect him of being dictated by government discharging Mec mandate.

Jumah has also advised Malawians not to allow criminals be treated as Very Very Important Persons (VVIP) because they are party loyalists but to let VVIPs remain VVIPs not criminals to remain VVIPs claiming that this is destroying the good reputation of Malawi.

The Mindset Change Pioneer has appealed to all patriotic Malawians who love the country, church organizations, and religious leaders to think of Malawi going back to the 1994 Independent Electoral Commission to run the 2025 elections in the interest of all.

He expresses fears that since Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) was established by an Act of Parliament, there have been no elections which were free, fair, credible and transparent making many to lose their interests in taking part to the future elections.

“There is need to activate the 1994 constitution recalling back Section 64 and 65 for Malawi to be totally free from political hooligans with political patriots to lead the country,” says Jumah.

He has also appealed to all Malawians to patronize rallies and listen to political party programs and objectives for them to make valid and positive decisions on who is a political patriot and political hooligans.

Jumah says he sees no reason many people registering and when it comes on the actual voting day, shunning the process warning Malawians that if they do not go for voting, a wrong person will be elected into office.

CFTC monitoring goods prices amid Kwacha devaluation

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) says it has been conducting price monitoring exercises on goods and services in the major cities and towns of the country to gather evidence of the violation of the Competition and Fair Trading Act through excessive price increases following the devaluation of the local currency by 44 percent on November 7, 2023.

CFTC says while it is obvious that any devaluation of the currency may trigger an upward adjustment goods or services prices, the organization has noted that some of the price increments are aimed at using the devaluation as a scapegoat to exploit consumers.

Lloyd Vincent Nkhoma

In a statement dated November 22, 2023 signed by its Executive Director (ED)Lloyd Vincent Nkhoma, the CFTC has warned suppliers that any supplier of goods and services found to be engaging in excessive pricing contrary to the CFTC Act, it will not hesitate to issue relevant penalties and sanctions for such conduct.

The commission Says it approached 19 manufacturers and suppliers of products and services to explain the rationale behind such high price adjustments and also engaged the relevant regulators on the same saying it is now expanding the price monitoring exercise to the districts and rural trading centres of the country to establish and gather evidence of possible violations of the CFTC Act.

“The CFTC is encouraging consumers and the general public to report any suspected violation of the CFTA through toll free line 2489 or send a WhatsApp message to 0987738749,” reads the statement in part.

Giving his reaction, a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard for Mvera area in Dowa Rodgers Kamphangala, has accused government of not consulting the citizens to be alert on the devaluation of the Malawi Kwacha by 44 percent describing this as a big margin which has never happened in the country’s history.

Kamphangala said it is sad that President Chakwera and his Vice Saulos Chilima promised Malawians of servant leadership, and that he was expecting that the two leaders would be coming to the citizens to seek their views on matters of national importance but the opposite is happening.

He said even though the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) is monitoring prices in cities, towns, districts and rural trading centres, this will not stop price adjustments to goods and services.

The MCP diehard has however, advised government to reduce levies on fuel observing that this is the only way for prices of commodities to be reduced but if this is left as it is, Malawians should bless for tougher times, Government do run stores, prices will go up beyond the reach of everyone in Malawi.

“Reduce fuel levies, all adjustments in price are basing on fuel increase, once the levies are reduced, prices of goods and services will be at least reasonable,”said Kamphangala
