Phyzix announces mountain goat music concert

Multiple award-winning hip-hop legend, Phyzix is set to headline the highly anticipated Mountain Goat music concert at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre on December 15, 2023.

Speaking to the journalist in Blantyre on Monday, Phyzix said the event will feature a stellar lineup of both local and regional artists, promising an unforgettable experience of music enthuastists.

“Featuring a diverse line up of local and regional artists, the event promises to be an experience of a life time and an amazing classic event for the people to have fun towards Christmas celebrations,” he said

Phyzix, whose real name is Noel Chikoleka, said the live band music concert will mark the launch of his 15th album called mountain goat which was released on October 27 this year.

He added that the event has among others, partnered with the renowned motivational speaker and business tycoon, Bernadicto Berna Nkhoma, Biz beverages company and the chef master Ipyana Mwagomba of the famous goat soup.

According to the musician, the concert is designed as a perfect opportunity for brands seeking to leverage on Phyzix apple that cut across different demographics to partner with in a win-win scenarios.

Phyzix also disclosed that the recent devaluation of the local currency has affected the preparation of the concert.

He said Jae Cash, Vinchenzo, Loki, Hyphen,Rashley, Mwanache, Charisma,Tuni, Kelie Devine, Third Eye, Brighto and smacks are among the local and regional artists that have been lined up for the concert.

Ladybird Private School in Blantyre successfully holds coding session for kids

Ladybird Private School in Upper Chinyonga, Blantyre,successfully held a coding session for kids aged 6 years to 13 years on November 19, 2023.

In the session, the kids were introduced to coding using the Python programming language.

Speaking in an interview with 247 Malawi News, the facilitator of the training, Dr. Bennett Kankuzi, who is also a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and Head of Department of Computer Science and Information Technology at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), said the number of kids who attended the session was more than what they had anticipated.



“It was great seeing kids writing and running code for the first time.

“We had planned for a limited space of 12 kids but 18 kids from different schools in Blantyre turned up,” said Kankuzi.

He cited unfamiliarity with the general computing environment by some kids as a challenge they encountered but said many quickly adapted to the same and as such, still felt satisfied with what they imparted to the kids during the training.

“We are very satisfied. The numbers exceeded our expectations. And the kids followed through everything easily.

Kankuzi said after successfully holding this training, they intend to hold more coding sessions at the aforementioned school as part of their engagement with communities.

On her part, Tayamika Malombe,one of the kids, who attended the trainings, indicated that they had fun and she enjoyed learning how to code and wished there could be more coding sessions.

She said that she particularly enjoyed learning how to make a computer answer questions such as “how old will she be on her next birthday?”.

Another kid, Mwayi Mphande, who also attended the coding training, also indicated that he would like to learn more on how he can create computer games on his own.

Ladybird Private School was established in 1990 by Joyce Jaffu.

In 2015, the school’s premises were leased to other institutions with similar business interest until 2023.

The School has been reopened now by Joyce Jaffu’s daughter – Jacqueline Jaffu-Pangani and it offers nursery, reception, lower primary and upper primary.

The school is currently offering Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) curriculum with secondary school to be reintroduced in 2024.

Kaliati says UTM to rake in more votes during 2025 elections

United Transformation Movement (UTM) General Secretary Patricia Kaliati says the party expects to rake in more votes during the 2025 general elections than the one million it secured during the 2019 general elections.

Kaliati was speaking in Lilongwe on Saturday November 18,2023 where the party welcomed 17 new members that joined from Alliance for Democracy (AFORD).

She said UTM has been on the political scene for a long time now, unlike in 2019 when it had only existed for a year.

“As a new party, our president (Saulos Chilima) garnered one million votes. And, today, as people are coming in we expect more than a year, “said Kaliati.

She added that the difference between UTM party and other parties is that UTM is a national and not a regional party.

Kaliati stressed that what they are doing is for UTM and its leader, Dr. Saulos Chilima and not Alliance.

In his reaction, AFORD Secretary General Elias Wakuda Kamanga said those that left had exercised their freedom of association.

“AFORD as a party, our journey continues and it can’t be a journey without casualties. Whoever has left were not intended for this tough journey because it is a journey for the toughest,” he said.

Those that joined UTM include AFORD’s former director of events Nancy Matupa, former national treasurer Jones Makuya and ex-director of logistics, Ellard Chapotera.

UTM is a key partner in the governing Tonse Alliance that booted out the opposition Democratic Progressive Party-DPP in the court sanctioned presidential poll in June 2020.

But there are now serious uncertainties and seemingly power struggle on the future of the Alliance as officials from UTM and its key partner, Malawi Congress Party have on several occasions engaged in heated debates and confrontations

This began last year after Chilima publicly told the nation that his power deal with Chakwera stipulates he will lead the Alliance after Chakwera’s five year term.

Donors continue to have overflowing confidence in Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera led government as World Bank Board of Executive Directors on Monday approved a $60 million grant meant to assist commercial banks in the country to have access to an imports backstopping facility from the International Development Association (IDA).

According to the bank, the project, De – risking Importation of Strategic Commodities (Disc) will establish a foreign currency trade facility for Malawi’s commercial banks.

The proposed facility, explains the Bretton Woods institution will provide correspondent banks with the assurance that the World Bank, standing behind the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), will assume the payment obligations of the local issuing banks in the unlikely event that local banks default on their payment obligations for essential commodities.

In a statement, World Bank says the contingent financing to import fertilizers and pharmaceuticals will address critical shortages in the market which if left unaddressed, have the potential to hinder Malawi’s economic recovery.

“Specifically, the project provides backstopping support on the payment obligations of local issuing banks to their correspondent banks targeting the import of fertilizers and pharmaceuticals,” reads the statement in part.

“Currently, correspondent banks lack confidence to extend letters of credit to banks in Malawi due to the high – risk profile of local banks.”

DPP sides with Malawians on calls for Tonse Alliance Government removal

The main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) says it is siding with Malawians during this difficult period, calling upon the Malawi Congress Party (MCP)-led Tonse Alliance government to resign.

The DPP says what is happening in Malawi is contrary to the basic expectations from President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and his Tonse Alliance government advising him to step aside and allow constitutional order processes to take off.

According to the party,the leaders in the MCP government are completely lost and clueless to the causes of devaluations and are out there busy peddling lies and blaming everyone else except themselves for their incompetence and mediocrity.

In a statement dated November 17, 2023 signed by its Spokesperson Shadric Namalomba on the devaluation of the Malawi Kwacha by 44 percent, the DPP says it is clear that the Tonse Alliance government came into power out of lies and they want to sustain their ability to remain in power through lies.

The DPP has reminded Malawians that the Tonse Alliance government peddled lies during the 2020 campaign period and they have relentlessly and viciously continued with their lies to be seen as if they are doing something Day in and Day out.

It says devaluating the currency alone without sorting out the causes of the problem, the fiscal and monetary policy challenge, is like chasing the wind saying as a result, prices of all basic goods and services such as food, utilities, transportation, farm inputs and groceries have skyrocketed.

“The DPP calls on the general public to refuse to be fooled any longer by the clueless and incompetent President Chakwera and demand for his immediate resignation in line with Section 12 of the Republican Constitution,” reads part of the statement.

The DPP says Malawi is in a state of total economic turmoil and meltdown claiming that Malawians from every corner of the country are on utter shock and deep distress following the recent devaluation of the Malawi Kwacha by 44 percent.

It has observed that just as Malawians have not yet recovered from another 25 percent devaluation that was effected in May, 2023 the Malawi Kwacha has in total depreciated from K732/ US Dollars in 2020 when the DPP left government to K1,700/US Dollars in just 3 years.
