President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is in Blantyre where high on the agenda is his attendance at the celebration of the Labour Day
Amidst the spirited atmosphere at Robins Park, the Labour Day commemorations for Malawi have commenced with a symbolic solidarity walk.
Leading the procession are their excellences President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and the First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera, alongside Vice President Rt. Hon. Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima.
Their excellences are joined by a diverse array of participants including members of Malawi Congress of Trade Union (MCTU) government officials, clergy, party officials, traditional chiefs, business leaders, and members of the general public.
As they step in unison, the message of unity and solidarity resounds throughout the park all the way to Njamba.
At Njamba Freedom Park, President Chakwera will inspect mounted stalls and pavilions before proceeding to his seat.
Some of the program items lined up for the day include a performance of a theme song by Soul Chembezi, a performance by the Malawi Prison Cultural Troupe, statements by various individuals, poetry, comedy performances, and speeches
President Chakwera arrived in Blantyre yesterday having just concluded the commemoration of World Creativity and Innovation Day in Lilongwe.
His presence at the commemorations today shows government’s dedication to addressing both labor rights and innovation.
Labour Day holds profound historical significance globally, and in Malawi, it serves as a poignant reminder of the labor force’s contributions to national progress. Today’s events are not merely ceremonial; they are a testament to the ongoing efforts to uphold and advance the rights of workers across various sectors.
As President Chakwera strides alongside fellow citizens, the walk symbolizes a collective commitment to the values of fairness, dignity, and inclusivity in the workplace. It is a moment of reflection, celebration, and advocacy—a reaffirmation of Malawi’s dedication to building a prosperous and equitable society for all.
Labour Day Significance:
The day is celebrated worldwide annually to raise awareness of the rights of working people and to protect them from exploitation. It is also intended to motivate initiatives aimed at improving labourers’ working conditions.
The Ministry of Education has recruited and promoted 9,753 secondary school teachers in a bid to increase access to quality education.
In a press statement dated February 19, 2024, signed by the Secretary for Education, Chikondano Mussa said the ministry recruited 2,681 and promoted 2,259 teachers at Grade TI and TJ respectively.
The statement added that the ministry has promoted 3,997 teachers to Senior Teachers/ Heads of Department (Grade TH), 316 teachers to the position of Heads of Department (Grade TG), and 500 teachers to Head Teachers (Grade TG).
