FAM launches second phase of FIFA women’s football campaign in Karonga

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) on Sunday launched the second phase of the FIFA Women’s Football Campaign in Karonga District, aimed at popularizing women’s football among young girls and encouraging their participation in the sport.

The FIFA-funded project, which has already reached Blantyre, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu in its first phase, has expanded to Zomba, Kasungu, and Karonga districts in its second phase.

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) on Sunday launched the second phase of the FIFA Women's Football Campaign in Karonga District, aimed at popularizing women's football among young girls and encouraging their participation in the sport.

As part of the campaign, women’s football ambassadors Maggie Chombo, Linda Kasenda, and Asimenye Simwaka delivered motivational talks to inspire and empower the young girls.

Six teams participated in the Karonga launch,and these are Karonga United Women, Baka City Women, Ndagha Academy, KK Sisters, Baka United, and Zinde Academy.

The football governing body says it will  introduce U14 and U16 Girls’ Leagues in Zomba, Karonga, and Kasungu later this year, further solidifying its commitment to developing women’s football in Malawi.

Ras Chikomeni Chirwa seeks funding for 2025 presidential bid

Ras David Chikomeni Chirwa,leader of Mozambique Alliance Party (MAP) has revealed that he needs 200 million kwacha to support his presidential campaign in the 2025 elections.

In a recent interview with local media, Chirwa said he has started seeking help from well-wishers to support his bid, as he wants to contest in the presidential race.

Among other things, Chirwa said the money will be used to organize rallies and pay nomination fees.

He added that he plans to hold large rallies in Lilongwe, Blantyre, and other districts in August this year, and has urged people to support him,in his quest to bring about change in the country.

Chirwa has been involved in politics for many years and has run for presidency before.

He has a strong following among some Malawians, particularly those who are dissatisfied with the current political leadership.

In 2019,Chirwa attempted to run for presidency but was disqualified by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) due to his failure to pay the required 2 million kwacha nomination fee, which was required for presidential candidates.

Charles Chipala scored a late goal against his former side Dedza Dynamos to help Silver Strikers secure a point in the TNM Super League match played at Dedza Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Chipala came off the bench to level the scores for the Central Bankers in the 75th minute after a good exchange of passes between Binwell Katinji and Chimwemwe Idana.

Victor Lungu had put the home side in front in the 39th minute as he scored with a beautiful header after receiving a cross from Khumbo Banda.

After the match,  Promise Kamwendo for Dynamos was voted man of the match.

Elsewhere, defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets registered their first win this season as they beat Chitipa United 3-nil at Karonga Stadium.

Babatunde Adepoju opened the scoring for the People’s team in the 23rd minute before Ephraim Kondowe and Patrick Mwaungulu came with the other goals in the second half.

In Blantyre, a lone goal by Bright Ntondagowa was enough to help Mighty Tigers secure maximum points against Mzuzu City Hammers at Kamuzu Stadium.

Ntondagowa scored in the 70th minute to take his side to the 8th position on the log table.

At Mpira Stadium, it ended 1-all between Bangwe All Stars and Karonga United.

Bangwe scored first through Aubrey Maloya in the 34th minute from the penalty spot and Saulos Moyo equalised for Karonga just five minutes before the end of the match.

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers remain on top of the log table with 7 points followed by Silver with the same number of points but the former have a superior goal difference.

The two teams are followed by Moyale Barracks, Mzuzu City Hammers and Creck Sporting who have all accumulated 6 points from three games.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets are on position 6 with 5 points after a single win and 2 draws.

Goals from the Nyasa Big Bullets side left Chitipa United struggling to keep up, as the holders asserted their dominance on the pitch.

In Blantyre, Bangwe All Stars clashed with Karonga in a closely contested match that ended in a 1-1 draw.

The visitors managed to find the back of the net with minutes remaining, stunning the home crowd and securing a valuable point on the road.

Both teams displayed determination and grit throughout the game, making it an exciting spectacle for the fans.

At Kamuzu Stadium, Tigers faced off against Mzuzu City Hammers in a tightly contested battle.

The match ended with Tigers securing a narrow 1-0 victory, thanks to a well-taken goal that proved to be the difference between the two sides.

The win lifted Tigers’ spirits and showcased their ability to grind out results when it matters most.

Nyasa Big Bullets Dominate Chitipa United in a 3-0 Victory at Karonga Stadium

In a highly anticipated match between Chitipa United and Nyasa Big Bullets in the third week of the TNM Super League, Nyasa Big Bullets emerged victorious with a commanding 3-0 win at Karonga Stadium.

The game kicked off with Chitipa United starting on a high note, applying pressure and making several attempts on goal.

However, the Nyasa Big Bullets’ goalkeeper remained alert, thwarting all of Chitipa’s early efforts.

Innocent Nyasulu, the goalkeeper for NBB, showcased his skills by denying Chitipa United multiple scoring opportunities within a mere 10-minute span.

Despite Chitipa’s persistent pressure, NBB managed to maintain their composure.

In the 12th minute, NBB had a corner but failed to convert it into a goal.

The resilient defense of Chitipa United kept the scoreline level until the 24th minute when Patrick Mwaungulu of Nyasa Big Bullets broke the deadlock with a well-placed shot.

The tempo of the game intensified when Babatunde Adepocho scored for Nyasa Big Bullets in the 23rd minute, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Gomezgan Chirwa proved to be a standout player for NBB, effectively blocking all of Chitipa United’s attempts on goal.

Chitipa United’s Ramadan Ntafu displayed impressive dribbling skills, while Babatunde Adepocho missed a clear scoring opportunity, sending the ball over the crossbar. As tensions rose on the field, the assistant coach for Chitipa United was shown a yellow card for foul language.

In the second half, Nyasa Big Bullets continued their dominance, with Ephraim Kondowe scoring in the 34th minute after receiving a long ball from Lyoid Aaron, extending their lead to 2-0.

The demoralized Chitipa United side conceded once again in the 37th minute when Patrick Mwaungulu found the back of the net, sealing the victory for NBB.

As Nyasa Big Bullets mounted intense pressure on their opponents, Chitipa United made three substitutions in an attempt to bolster their attacking prowess and defense.

NBB also made triple substitutions to solidify their lead and defend against any potential comeback from Chitipa United.

In a post-match interview, Nyasa Big Bullets’ coach Calisto Pasuwa expressed his concerns about the poor pitch conditions, emphasizing the need for better football facilities in Malawi.

He also praised his players for their tactical awareness and ability to capitalize on opportunities during the game.

Heston Munthali, assistant coach for Nyasa Big Bullets, commended his team for dominating in Chitipa United’s territory despite the challenging ground conditions.

On the other hand, Elvis Kafoteka, assistant coach for Chitipa United, acknowledged his team’s shortcomings in the second half and vowed to address them moving forward.

Collen Mujuru was voted as the man of the match for his outstanding performance during the game.

With this victory, Nyasa Big Bullets continue their impressive form in the TNM Super League, while Chitipa United will look to regroup and bounce back stronger in their upcoming fixtures.
