In defence of President Chakwera’s attendance at the UN General Assembly

By Chikumbutso Mtumodzi, Dowa

President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s presence at the 2023 UN General Assembly (UNGA78) in New York, which is slated for September 18 to 26, 2022, should be seen as a strategic move that can potentially benefit Malawi in various ways.

Many political and economic pundits have expressed their varied opinions about whether or not our beloved Head of State should attend this annual gathering of world leaders. My interest is in some Malawians’ argument that the country’s economic hardships should take precedence over international engagements.

I agree. However, it is equally imperative to consider the long-term advantages and opportunities that can arise from such high-level diplomatic participation.

Chakwera at UNGA

Here are some of my personal views:

1. International Cooperation and Partnerships: The United Nations General Assembly provides a unique platform for world leaders to engage in dialogue, foster cooperation, and build partnerships with other nations. By attending this global gathering, our President Chakwera has the opportunity to establish connections with leaders from around the world, including those from countries that could potentially offer assistance or investment in Malawi’s development projects. These partnerships can lead to increased foreign direct investment, technology transfer, and knowledge sharing, which are crucial for economic growth and development.

2. Promotion of Malawi’s Interests: I have had the privilege of attending UNGA before and I am well aware that the UN General Assembly serves as a forum where countries can advocate for their national interests and influence global decision-making processes. President Chakwera’s presence in New York will provide him with the opportunity to represent our beautiful country on an international stage, ensuring that the country’s concerns and priorities are heard by the global community. This can be particularly valuable for a developing nation like Malawi, as it provides an opportunity to address issues such as climate change, poverty alleviation, healthcare, education, and human rights at a global level.

3. Access to International Funding and Support: I am also hugely aware that UNGA brings together representatives from various international organizations, including financial institutions and donor agencies. By attending this event, President Chakwera can engage with these entities and explore avenues for securing financial assistance or grants for development projects in Malawi. This is especially important considering the economic hardships faced by the country. Building relationships with potential donors and showcasing Malawi’s commitment to development can increase the chances of receiving financial support, which can be instrumental in addressing pressing issues and driving economic progress.

It is crucial to note that President Chakwera’s attendance at the UN General Assembly does not imply a disregard for the economic challenges faced by Malawi. Rather, it demonstrates a proactive approach to finding solutions and opportunities on a global scale. The potential benefits of this trip, including international cooperation, partnerships, promotion of national interests, and access to funding, outweigh the short-term concerns of austerity measures.

In conclusion, President Chakwera’s participation in the UN General Assembly should be seen as an investment in Malawi’s future. By engaging with world leaders, advocating for national interests, and exploring avenues for international support, the President has the potential to pave the way for economic growth and development in Malawi.

In a dramatic twist of events the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament which today was supposed to start meeting stakeholders as part of the enquiry on Malawi’s botched fertilizer procurement deal with East Bridge says it will not proceed with the enquiry.

PAC chairperson Mark Botomani has told local media in Lilongwe a short while ago after the committee’s two hour inhouse meeting that the decision has been made after analysing all documents concerned parties presented to the committee on the matter.

He said the committee’s assessment of the documents has found that no public expenditure was made under the deal Malawi entered with the Romanian firm hence no need to proceed meeting the parties on the matter.

The Commitee was among others expected to meet Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda, officials from the Government Contracting Unit, ministry of Agriculture and the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority.

As part of the deal, Malawi was expected to exchange produce including 250, 000 metric tons of Soya beans at USD 528 per mt, translating into USD132,000,000 (MK132 billion) and 250,000mt of groundnuts at USD 725 per mt costing USD 181,250,000 (about MK182 billion).

A delegation from St Leonard Kamungu Parish of the Southern Lake Malawi Diocese from September 8 to September 11, 2023 visited Consulate of Malawi in Tete to explore the possibility of striking a relationship between the Igleja Anglicana Epifania Parish in Tete, Mozambique and their parish.

The delegation was led by the Parish Priest Reverend Father Andrew Manda and one member of the Mens guild, Avuwi and four members of the Womens Guild of the Daughters of the King.

The delegation’ first point of call was the Consulate of Malawi in Tete for a courtesy call with the Consul General Happy Saka.

In his welcome remarks,Saka commended the route followed by the Church and encouraged them to explore more ways of assisting their Governments in the development process, be it in the educational, health or business sector just to mention a few.

“As the Epifania Parish was recently elevated to a Cathedral, the possible relationship would also be extended to the dioceses of Southern Malawi and that of Tete/Libombo and their respective Bishops,”said Saka.

He committed the Consulate to support the agenda that the Anglican Church might want to pursue in this process.

The Consul General then substantiated the commitment by hosting the delegations meeting with the Bishop of Tete Libombo at the Malawi Official Residence and later, participating in the Sunday Prayers.

Tete /Libombo Diocese was represented by the Lord Bishop Bambo, the Venerated Father Bukutu as well as Mrs Agnes Sande, the Catechist and President of Mothers Union.

Sunday service was concluded by meetings of the Women folk with Members of the Daughters of the King who shared their line of work in Church as consisting of three pillars namely Prayer, Service and Evangelism.

This was well received and being digested by women who might want to join and be the pioneers as the Guild has not yet reached Tete Province.

The men in the Church also had the occassion to exchange with the representative of Avuwi.

Early this year, the consulate also received a delegation of church members from Kaning’a CCAP (Nkhoma Synod) and the members of Living Waters Church.

Kaning’a CCAP recently managed to strike a deal with Tete CCAP Church and are in a good working relationship as partners.

The Anglican delegation is the third church group to be hosted by Consul General Happy Saka in the one year period that he has been in post.
