UTM, UDF withdraw from Dedza Central parliamentary by-elections

By Linda Kwanjana

With all the noises on social media, UTM and the United Democratic Front (UDF) have announced that they will not contest during the Dedza Central constituency by-election slated for November 9 this year.

According to UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala, the party has decided to withdraw from the race as a strategic move to keep other parties in the dark regarding UTM moves in the run up to the 2025 elections.

On its part, the UDF publicist Yusufu Mwawa said, the party has decided to invest their time and resources in the 2025 elections hence their decision not to contest in the forthcoming by-election.

However, although no one saw this coming, this should not come as a surprise. Coming from a humiliating defeat in the recent Mtiya Ward by-election in Zomba, where UTM and UDF came distant third and fourth respectively, the two struggling parties know that their chances of prevailing over the Malawi Congress Party are slim.

Any astute politician should know when to throw a towel. In any case both UTM and UDF must have thought that if MCP ran neck to neck with DPP in the latter’s stronghold in the recent Mtiya ward which MCP lost by a small margin to the eventual winner, there should be no contest in Dedza Central.

Even the DPP will appear on the ballot paper for the sake of making the elections look like a contest.

By and large the two parties’ decisions not to contest in the next election is not strategic one but an exercise to save their faces.

Dedza Central fell vacant a few months ago following the death of an MCP legislature. Willard Gwengwe, an MCP candidate himself is a favourite to win the seat

Beatitude Naturopathy and Wellness Centre has organized a week-long Backpain awareness and alignment where people with persistent back pain will be treated using naturopathic methods.

The Centre’s Director Francis Malunga said in an interview yesterday that during the awareness week, which starts from 30 October to 5 November 2023, the wellness centre will give free lectures to people who have back pain issues apart from treating them.

“We will have a back alignment procedure for those with back pain using naturopathic methods. They will only need to pay a consultation fee of K20,000 otherwise we will not be charging for the actual treatment of back pain,” said Malunga.

NICO Group, led by NBS Bank plc and Eris Properties, has collectively supported this year’s Institute of Marketing in Malawi (IMM) lake conference with K8 million.

The conference is set to take place from Thursday 26 October to Sunday 29 October 2023 in Mangochi.

Speaking after handing over the cheque to IMM on Monday, NBS Bank Head of Marketing and Customer Experience, Tamanda Ng’ombe said the progress the Institute has made in the recent years compelled them to provide the support.

“We are marketers and rally behind IMM. For the past years, IMM has done a good job in uplifting the profile of marketers in Malawi through training, interactions with marketers, and positioning of the field as a contributor towards national development. They have set a standard, and therefore looking at the progress made, we do look forward to the conference because we learn from it and we get to interact with fellow local and international marketers. This is commendable because we are seeing the growth and the trajectory that marketers are taking in the country,” said Ngombe.

In his remarks, IMM Vice President and Conference Organizing Committee Chairperson, George Damson, said the sponsorship will go a long way to make the conference a success as this is the highest sponsorship the institute has received this year.

“We are excited for the support. Having the NICO Group led by NBS Bank as part of our sponsors this year is a very big thing. They have previously supported the Institute, but this year is more significant given the current economic challenges that every other business is facing,” said Damson.

The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Breaking Barriers: Marketing as a Catalyst for Economic Growth’.

National Epilepsy Association of Malawi (NEAM) says it will from November 1 to 2, 2023 conduct a walk covering a distance of about 60km from Mponela hospital in Dowa to Parliament building in Lilongwe as part of creating awareness of elipelisy stigma in Malawi, most especially towards the girl child.

Speaking in a separate interview,Chifundo Zamadunga, NEAM National Coordinator said they are also expected to submit a position paper to Parliament on the need to address epilepsy stigma in Malawi.

Said Zamadunga:” Yes, it is true that we have organized an epilepsy awareness walk. The main aim of the walk is to create awareness about epilepsy stigma,to initiate the IGAP discussion and to present people with epilepsy issues.”

The NEAM National Coordinator said the walk will be participated by various people including NEAM staff members, volunteers and people with epilepsy.

She then called on the general public to render their support towards the walk.

“Let us help those who have volunteered themselves to join the walk.Let us help to solve some of the challenges people with epilepsy face and all in all,let us donate what we have towards the walk,”she said.

Epilepsy is the most common chronic brain disease and affects people of all ages.

More than 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy; nearly 80% of them live in low- and middle-income countries.

An estimated 70% of people with epilepsy could be seizure free if properly diagnosed and treated.

However, about three quarters of people with epilepsy in low-income countries do not get the treatment they need, and this rises to 90% in some countries.

In many such countries, many health professionals do not have the training to recognize, diagnose and treat epilepsy.

In most resource-poor countries, antiseizure medicines are not available.

People with epilepsy and their families frequently suffer from stigma and discrimination.

In many parts of the world the true nature of epilepsy has also long been distorted by myths, fear and mistaken notions about the disorder.

Zantchito project has committed to build database for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMES) and Business Development Service (BDS) which will help the SMEs to get information easily and lead some organisations to find information about them.

Speaking during the SMEs and Business Development Service(BDS) workshop on Wednesday in Lilongwe, Umodzi Holdings Managing Director Tionge Kaonga said the SMEs are very important because they create job, help in generating revenue for the government as well as improving trade through producing high quality product which can be sold outside the country.

Kaonga highlighted that the database will also help them to understand where the SMEs are, their value chains and the problems that they are facing which will be very easily to target or reach them.

He said:” for a long period of time we have seen a number of people who are claiming to be consultants supporting the SMEs and in some cases the quality of services that they have been provided to SMEs have been very poor below standard.

“So the ministry of trade and Industry there is department of SMEs which they have been a need to seal a gap inorder to try to improve service provision so that we can create vibrant SMEs in Malawi which can be able to compete at regional and global level.”

In his remarks,Small and Medium Enterprise Development Institute (SMEDI) Senior Marketing business development Officer Alinafe Mpoka said the absence of the database has affected the SMEs because sometimes they were not assisted to the government tenders because they were not not registered.

He added that the database will going to make all the information about the SMEs to be in one package which enables the organisation to click a button in order to know all the information of unreached SMEs and the database will be credible saying everyone is going to benefit.

The Zantchito skills for job programme which aims to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Malawi is funded by European Union and is being implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through COPA.
