The High Court  Financial Crimes Division on  Tuesday March 26,2024, overturned the three-year suspended sentences given to former National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) Gerald Viola and his co-convict Chrispin Chingola and instead sentenced the two to 2 years imprisonment.

The two were arrested in October 2020 on allegations that they unilaterally issued a K3.3 billion Local Purchasing Order (LPO) to Missie’s Trading to supply 10, 000 metric tonnes of maize to the organisation.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) appealed against the three-year suspended sentences last year.

Judge Anneline Kanthambi observed that the offence the two committed is a felony and not a misdemeanor hence the quashing of the lower court’s judgement.

In an interview with local media, ACB senior legal and prosecution officer Ellen Chandilanga said the bureau is satisfied with the ruling saying it will send a strong message to would be be offenders about the punishment associated with the offence.

According to the ACB, the sentence is with effect from 26 March, 2024, which is the day of ruling.

Viola was convicted of abuse of office contrary to Section 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act while Chingola was convicted for influencing a public officer to misuse a public office contrary to Section 25B (2) of the Corrupt Practices Act (CPA).

In March 2022, Viola and Chingola were found with a case to answer on offences under the CPA and Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act.

The Boma Lathu Programme is supporting Nice to deliver at community level with voter education, accountability strengthening, human rights, mobilization for citizen participation in decision-making and national development.

Speaking during a-day long drilling workshop held at Mponela in the district, Dowa Nice district Civic Education Expert Alinafe Chikakuda, said Boma Lathu Programme will contribute to strengthening democratic governance and the social contract in Malawi.

Chikakuda said the Nice Trust will support delivery of nationwide civic education and increase participation for women, youth and disadvantaged groups in democratic processes saying through investigative journalism, the media acts as a powerful watchdog, uncovering corrupt practices, holding the powerful accountable, and fostering public awareness.

“The media is the provider of reliable information, watchdog, platform for democratic discourse, and mirror of diversity in society,” she said.

The Nice Trust Expert expressed her commitment to working with the media in the district for them to operate in a very professional and ethically manner to help the communities get reliable information and be able to demand accountability from duty bearers.

In his remarks, one of the journalists Kondwani Kandiado of the Nation Publications Limited, described the workshop as an eye opener to journalists in the district for them to know the core areas of reporting stories.

Kandiado urged fellow journalists to play a pivotal role in writing stories that will benefit the marginalized communities to hold duty bearers accountable and at the same time bringing development to areas that cannot be reached by the duty bearers.

Once Again Malawi 1-2 Zambia

0

By Burnett Munthali

Not surprising enough Malawi once again got defeated on Tuesday 26 March 2024 by 2-1 at home ground Bingu National Stadium. I remember the Malawian Coach Patrick Mabedi was so hopeful that Malawi would beat Zambia in today’s game to reach third position. But I had a contrary prediction over the same game. I didn’t see Malawi winning against Zambia.

It is not bad to dream for good things. We all must dream for the good things and that is normal in life. Unfortunately in Malawi we dream for good things without a good foundation for which we would like to achieve our goals.

Zambia

My general analysis in today’s game is just as usual. It was a poor football show for Malawi. The flames conceded two goals in the first half which was not different from the first game they lost against Kenya.

My special observation is that Malawi has repeated the same mistakes today which they did in the previous game. The team conceded two goals within the first half and I would rather say within few seconds. Today it was the same thing, Malawi conceded two goals in the first half. Same mistake repeated. Same weakness displayed.

The first half of today’s football game was particularly very poor for Malawi. They did not show that they wanted to fight for this game, probably they did not have a clear direction how to play against Zambia. In the second half at least I saw a sign of life in the Malawian national team. They came with a different fighting spirit. That was great unfortunately, they couldn’t score.

I think the Malawi team improved after four players were substituted into the game and of course a serious discussion in the dressing room say half time. This brought some kind of energy for the flames. Malawi played fairly well in the second half but as usual they repeatedly failed to score even when scoring chances were available. Malawi still failed to utilize or capitalize on the chances that we were created. Football is about utilizing chances that are created in the game.

This is a major challenge for Malawi national football team. They concede goals quite early into the game in different tournaments before they even settle down. Secondly as a result of conceding early goals they fail to concentrate or maintain the tempo of the game. Actually I think that when Malawi football team plays, it appears to me they are always scared during the game. I may be proven right or wrong but this is my observation.

The major challenge for Malawi football team which I see is, failing to create opportunities to score and failing to score when such opportunities have been created. The other challenge is the team always fails to develop the kind of football they would like to play and maintain throughout 90 minutes.

Finally I would like to say that the coach has been proven wrong once again this time around. Patrick Mabedi promised the team would fight to be on third position after playing against Zambia. But at the end of 90 minutes the opposite is true. Zambia has carried the day and Malawi has fallen to position 4 in this tournament. This means the coach gave false hopes into this game.

Coming to the players I always believe that the major challenge is with the players for the flames We have a team that is not teachable. Different coaches have come and gone employed they keep losing. Malawi football team has always failed to rise to the level of football that supporters would like to see. Even if supporters rally behind the team, the flames always disappoints its supporters.

This is the time I would like once again put across my arguments that we need a lot of time to develop football. As a nation we need to develop football from the grassroots so that we have a football team that can deliver. At one time a member of parliament proposed that Malawi needed to take a break in football for two or three years. I would like to support that idea that we need to take a break in order to develop and raise the standards of our football team.

Otherwise the mistakes that were displayed today are the same mistakes that were displayed during the game against Kenya. They are the same mistakes that have been repeatedly displayed in different games and tournaments as well. And I believe the seme mistakes will be repeated in the near future.

Grassroots football must be developed in schools and colleges throughout the country. Malawi needs to have competitive football trainings and games in schools and colleges whether there will be sponsorship or not. Schools in Malawi must introduce and develop football seriously. I know we cannot afford to establish Football Academies in the country. Definitely there will be so many excuses given towards the construction or building of football academies. That’s why my proposal is that as a country we must use the institutions that are already in place. We have so many primary and secondary schools throughout the country in the remote and Urban areas.

Football teams should be created and trained in all institutions on weekly bases twice in a week. Such an approach to football will take Malawi forward and develop the youth become better players than at have now. We need to develop and encourage children in football from the ages of 12 to 13 years. I believe we can have football players who can endure in the game without developing any fatigue easily as they currently do.

Currently the crop of players that we have become exhausted quite easily. Why is that? It’s because our players do not have endurance training programs in football.

Aaron Xhali prophecies about Bushiri’s presidency in 2025

One of the renown Prophet Aaron Xhali, has made a prophecy that the Lord-God has gave him a message for Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church to pray for Prophet Shephered Bushiri that he has God’s full back-up for a presidential hopeful in 2025.

Prophet Xhali said God has given Prophet Bushiri presidency in his country besides mankind fighting this man and discrediting him, God has spoken to him and he has seen him holding a presidential seat inside the presidential Palace.

Bushiri

He said he has never met Prophet Bushiri physically and he is not trying to buy his face but simply telling what to say saying he is only prophecy that Jesus has told him to pray for the man of God as he is about to take the challenging presidency in Malawi.

Speaking to his congregation through a preaching trending in various social media platforms, Prophet Xhali said he is aware that some other people will not like Bushiri to be the President while others will say “Yes” assuring the congregation that Bushiri will be a statesman in Malawi.

Prophet Xhali encouraged Jesus followers, Jesus’s nation and his followers around the world to pray for Prophet Bushiri so that the will of God must be done saying it is about time for prophets, Pastors, Apostles and men of God to occupy strategic positions in government for the benefit of the Kingdom.

He has dismissed claims which other people will be making of him that people should not recruit prophets and Pastors to hate Prophet Bushiri advising all that if the man of God offended them, if they are Christians, they must forgive him because it is too long.

“Whatever he did, I am not involved, don’t recruit us in hating Prophet Bushiri, if you are a Christian, you must forgive him, it is too long,” said Prophet Xhali in a message trending on social media.

Meanwhile, True Freedom Fighters Movement face book page has announced that on 3rd May, 2024 Malawians will be in the streets holding demonstrations to force Prophet Shephered Bushiri to stand for the 2025 presidential race.

“Dates and venues for the demonstrations will be announced later,” reads the communication in part.

Health ministry says injectable PrEP to eliminate HIV as a public health threat by 2030

Ministry of Health has expressed optimism that the newly introduced injectable Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is safe and has ability to eliminate HIV as a public health threat by 2030.

This is according to the ministry’s director of HIV and AIDS Programmes Rose Nyirenda.

Nyirenda indicates that the injectable PrEP is currently available in several health facilities.

These health facilities include Chilomoni Health Centre, Limbe MACRO, Naperi Drop Centre in Blantyre, and in Lilongwe the health facilities include Area 25 Health Centre, Bwaila Hospital and Area 47 Drop Centre respectively.

Rose Nyirenda

According to Nyirenda, the mentioned six health facilities will provide the most practical, and effective strategies of delivering the injectable PrEP before scaling up to additional 41 selected health facilities across the country.

The director also says that the injectable PrEP can be used by anyone who has reached 15 years and is at substantial risk of contracting HIV as screened by the health care provider.

“This may include among those that are substantially female sexual workers, some pregnant and/or prestigious women who can transmit to their babies, truck drivers who sometimes may have multiple partners among many others,” says Nyirenda.

Nyirenda emphasises that PrEP is not a vaccine against HIV and does not offer protection to individuals if they have been exposed to HIV, and also doesn’t prevent Sexually Transmitted Infections.

She further emphasises that the vaccine is only active for two months hence a need to be vaccinated every other two months.

In January 2021, Malawi rolled out the implementation of oral PrEP for HIV prevention following a successful pilot phase within the country.

As of today over 100,000 are on oral PrEP.

However, almost half of those clients are continuing on Oral PrEP for various reasons.

Inorder to provide options for those eligible to access PrEP, Long-acting injectable PrEP was introduced and launched in September 2023 and is being promoted alongside Oral PrEP and other HIV prevention methods such as condoms, VMMC, STI screening and treatment.
