The country’s top financial institution National Bank of Malawi plc (NBM) has on Friday given K80 million to the Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) for the procurement of blood bank fridges that will be placed in Mulanje and Mangochi district hospitals.

In a statement, NBM plc Chief Executive Officer(CEO) MacFussy Kawawa says the donation signifies the importance the Malawi Stock Exchange(MSE) listed bank places on the health and well-being of the people of Malawi.

“The blood bank fridges will have an impact on the lives of two million people in Mulanje and Mangochi districts.

“The timely and safe transportation of blood has been a critical challenge for Malawi Blood Transfusion Service,” says Kawawa in a statement.

On her part, MBTS CEO Natasha Nsamala says the donation will not only help the three districts, but also the whole country.

“The donation will help us to provide safe and adequate blood and blood products to hospitals that are required to carry out blood transfusion,” she says.

According to Nsamala, the blood bank fridges will reduce the distance taken to collect blood in Blantyre.

She says with the NBM support, they will achieve their mission of supplying safe blood to the people.

MBTS collects 100 000 units of blood annually, according to Nsamala.

He added that the African Development Bank(ADB) has shown interest to provide funding for the construction of a hydropower station and a Multipurpose dam on Tanzania’s Songwe River basin projected to cost USD1 Billion.

Usi further challenged Malawians to have the desire to replenish the forest cover without waiting for an official annual tree planting season.

“Malawians should have the responsibility of planting trees with or without the government officially opening the season. It should be in us,” he said.

He said the Ministry will make a program and announce the date when the tree planting season will be officially launched.

Soon, Malawi and Tanzania are expected to be producing 180.2 megawatts of electricity at the powerplant to be shared equally.
