European Union assures President Chakwera on resumption of Direct budget support

A high-level delegation from the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs on Tuesday met Malawi president Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

The meeting aimed at fostering deeper collaboration between Malawi and Europe and discussed critical matters encompassing regional security, economic cooperation, and shared developmental initiatives.

The EU stressed resumption of direct budgetary support to Malawi following critical economic reforms which the country has undertaken.

The interface also served as a pivotal platform for diplomatic dialogue, emphasizing the multifaceted bond between Malawi and the European Union.



President Chakwera, in his address, emphasized the enduring commitment of Malawi towards fortifying relations with the European Parliament, citing the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling global challenges and promoting collective prosperity.

Highlighting the delegation’s acknowledgment of Malawi’s steadfastness as a reliable partner, the leader of the delegation of the EU Committee Hon. David McAllister, expressed admiration for the country’s support for the international agenda.

He particularly lauded Malawi’s pivotal role in regional and national security matters, affirming the crucial support rendered during critical junctures.

Acknowledging the EU’s role as one of Malawi’s significant partners, President Chakwera honored the delegation’s visit, attributing the evolving and strengthening relations to shared values.

He commended Europe’s exemplary model of regional integration, considering it a learning opportunity for African nations striving for similar progress.

Expressing gratitude for the EU’s consistent support across diverse sectors, ranging from governance and health to education and disaster relief, President Chakwera specifically highlighted the solidarity extended during challenging times, such as cyclones and other disasters.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of commitment from both sides, signifying a shared determination to continue collaborative endeavors.

President Chakwera’s operation Tigwirane Manja starts bearing fruits -45 houses handed over for use

Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera initiative which he launched in March this year has started bearing fruits.

Just on Tuesday, Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development officially handed over 45 houses to the families whose property including houses were completely damaged by Cyclone Freddy in March this year.



Minister of Lands Deus Gumba, said the newly-built houses have been constructed with financial support from Dozy M’mobousi through Goodwill Ambassadors for Tropical Cyclone Freddy former Presidents Dr Bakili Muluzi and Dr Joyce Banda.

The Dozy Village in the area of Traditional Authority Phweremwe in Phalombe was named after the main donor.
Malawi Red Cross Society monitored the implementation of the project.

Just days after the launch of the campaign, Former President Dr Bakili Muluzi, in his capacity as Goodwill Ambassador for Cyclone Freddy, announced a K500 million Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation who made a deposit for the construction of 75 houses for Tropical Cyclone Freddy survivors in Zomba and Phalombe.

Mmobuosi, a Nigerian author and entrepreneur committed K500 million into the Tigwirane Manja Housing Project which will see 75 houses being constructed in Phalombe and Zomba districts but currently 45 have been handed over for use.

Zikhale awards his constituency strategist

Member of parliament for Nkhata-bay South constituency Ken Zikhale Ng’oma has awarded his constituency strategist Dyson Mponela with a brand new motorcycle for his dedication and hardworking spirit towards the constituency agenda.

Ng’oma who is also the Homeland Security Minister made the gesture at Chatonda hotel on Monday when he presided over an annual constituency political conference aimed to review how the party has performed and suggestions for future developmental plans.

During the meeting, Zikhale awarded Mr Mponela for his dedication and hardworking spirit toward the attainment of party agendas at the constituency level.

Ng’oma added that Mponela’s leadership has taken the party to a greater level in his constituency.

“Mponela is a hardworking person,so i decided to thank him as we lap up the year, such people need to be recognised and motivated for their great work for the party,” He said.

Mponela thanked Ng’oma for the gesture, saying that it will help him to ease mobility challenges,hence enabling to reach all areas within the constituency.

Meanwhile, Senior chief Fukamapiri has thanked president Lazarus Chakwera for appointing Zikhale as a cabinet minister, citing that this is a great recognition considering that the party originated from Nkhata-bay South constituency where Zikhale is a member of parliament.

The function was graced by T/A Malengamzoma,T/A Zilakoma, different business people and MCP top officials at the constituency level.

Kenyatta Six Lane Road project to be completed by July 2024

Minister of Transport Jacob Hara on Tuesday Toured Kenyatta 6 lane capacity road improvement project.

Hara was accompanied by Member of Parliament for the area Alfred Jiya. Speaking during the tour , the Minister lambasted the Chinese construction company delaying the project.

Hara said although the reasons for the delay are understandable , the situation is still worrisome because this project could have been completed by now.

But contractors says will complete the project come July 2024.

Taking his turn, Member of Parliament for the area Alfred Jiya said the project is crucial and will change the face of Lilongwe . He said his people will benefit from the project once completed and that some have already started benefitting through employment.

Jiya commended President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for all the developments taking place in his area.

For the sake of records Lilongwe City centre is no longer the same under President Dr Lazarus Chakwera.

Pursuant to the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS III), 2018 and the Transport Master Plan, 2018, the Malawi Vision 2063, 2021 which are recent policy documents that articulates issues related to both economic growth and development in the Transport Sector, the Government of the Republic of Malawi is expanding the Kenyatta road from a single carriageway to a multi carriageway (6 lanes) in the City of Lilongwe.

Inua Advocacy releases refugees, Malawians concerns documentary

The Inua Advocacy, an organization advocating for refugee rights in Malawi, has released a documentary carrying refugees and asylum seekers concerns as well as people who were working for them at Mgona township in Lilongwe.

In the documentary, the refugees and asylum seekers relocated to Dzaleka Camp in Dowa are praying for government assistance following their relocation claiming that they lost all of their businesses to the government and are helpless for the government to listen to their cries.

One woman is heard crying to the government that they did not know that the businesses they were doing will be forfeited to the government following their relocation to Dzaleka Refugee Camp saying now, she is failing to send her children to school.

The woman said she has now been reduced to a beggar begging from well wishers food and other everyday life needs, narrating that she was self-reliant and able to provide to her family members all of their needs.

“For all the years we have been in Malawi, government did not tell us that the businesses we were doing did not belong to us but to it,” said the woman.

In Lilongwe, people of Mgona township and surrounding areas are all speechless as their source of earning a living were relocated to Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa, women are being seen carrying winnowers in their hands searching for jobs but to no avail.

Mai Esnath Kaliza said with the money she was receiving from winnowing agricultural produces of owners of containers, she was able to feed her seven children and able to pay Development Fund at Chipala LEA School where they are learning.

“I cannot take K7000 to pay Development Fund for each of my children at Chipala School, buying a 5L pail of maize at K4000,” She narrated the story while tears flowing out through her cheeks.

James Mpotazingwe, who was working as a loader of bags into the containers at Mgona, claimed that theft and burglary cases have increased at Mgona and surrounding areas because government killed their business of making money.

Mpotazingwe said the youth have nothing to do following their relocation exercise of their bosses to Dzaleka and many have resorted into excessive beer drinking and engaging in criminality activities a thing which was not there with the presence of their masters.

“Four of us are at Maula Prison arrested for committing various crimes ranging from theft, burglary and malicious damages,” he said.
