Government Boosts Higher Education Access and Quality

The Minister of Higher Education, Hon. Dr. Jessie Kabwila, has assured Malawians that the government remains dedicated to making higher education more accessible and of better quality. She delivered this message at the University of Malawi graduation ceremony held in the Great Hall in Zomba on Friday, where 1,350 students received their certificates, diplomas, and degrees, including 6 PhDs. Notably, 45.5 percent of the graduates were women.

Dr. Kabwila praised the graduating class for their hard work, congratulating the 21 students who earned distinctions in fields such as Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Law, Economics, Chemistry, Arts, Communication, Design, Education, and Humanities. She explained that the government has removed restrictive barriers to university entry and is now providing loans and bursaries to support students from poor families and those living with disabilities.

The Minister also highlighted significant investments in infrastructure and technology, announcing the construction of new hostels, lecture rooms, an administration block, and libraries. She applauded the University of Malawi for its Device Empowerment Programme, which will assist every student in owning a laptop on loan. Dr. Kabwila added that the government is covering 90 percent of university fees through direct funding, bursaries, and loans to ensure no student drops out due to financial hardship. She also stressed that under President Chakwera’s leadership, universities have operated independently without political interference, resulting in no premature university closures since 2020.

President Chakwera Revives Vision for Chipoka’s Transformation into a Major Economic Hub

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transforming Chipoka in Salima District into a secondary city, a vision originally conceived by Malawi’s founding president. Speaking at Chipoka Ginnery in the area of Senior Chief Ndindi, President Chakwera detailed plans to establish a vibrant economic hub complete with functional railway and water transport systems to significantly boost business activities.

The President recalled Chipoka’s history as a bustling business harbor where ships once docked and enterprises thrived. He expressed his firm determination to restore that economic vitality by bringing back passenger trains, enabling ships to dock with goods, and constructing modern roads. Chakwera revealed that a German company has already been identified to implement the ambitious project, confirming that all necessary paperwork and a detailed construction roadmap are now finalized.

Further, President Chakwera urged all Malawians to unite in support of the development initiatives his administration is implementing across the country, pledging to accelerate national development and transform lives if re-elected. Speaking on behalf of the late Senior Chief Ndindi, Senior Chief Kambwiri commended the government for its ongoing development projects in the area. He specifically praised the provision of farmers loans, which have enabled many to venture into irrigation farming and effectively address the challenge of hunger.

Malawi launches AU-COMESA pre-election initiative to promote peaceful elections

Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mwayiwawo Polepole, has described the launch of the AU-COMESA Pre-Election Initiative for Malawi as a critical step as the country prepares for the September 16 elections.

Speaking at the launch ceremony held at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC), Dr. Polepole said the initiative seeks to promote peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with national institutions and partners to safeguard democracy and ensure a peaceful electoral process.

He also stressed the importance of upholding human rights, particularly the right to vote without fear, noting that the initiative will help reinforce existing peace efforts ahead of polling day.

Dr. Polepole further thanked the African Union (AU), COMESA, and other partners for their continued support.

AU Ambassador Akok Madut, Head of the Mediation and Dialogue Division, said the AU will maintain a quiet facilitation role, supported by an observation mission and preventive diplomacy presence in Lilongwe.

COMESA Committee of Elders Chairperson, Ambassador Ashraf Rashed, echoed the sentiment, noting that Malawi’s history of peaceful democratic transitions sets an example, and the upcoming elections present an opportunity to reaffirm that commitment to democracy and peace.

The launch of the AU-COMESA Pre-Election Initiative demonstrates Malawi’s proactive approach to ensuring a credible and peaceful electoral process.

By involving regional bodies like the AU and COMESA, the initiative strengthens democratic safeguards and provides reassurance to voters that their rights will be protected.

As Malawi approaches the September 16 elections, the collaboration between government, regional partners, and civil society will be crucial in maintaining peace, stability, and public confidence in the electoral process.

5 men arrested for theft of K10m worth of chicks at Central Poultry

Lilongwe Police have arrested five men in connection with the theft of 1,200 chicks valued at K10.2 million from Central Poultry kraals at Airwing at around 22:00 hours on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

According to Lilongwe Police Spokesperson Inspector Hestings Chigalu the suspects have been identified as Nelson Gomani, 51, Jailosi Mwale, 31, Maxwell Felix, 22, Fatsani Gomani, 20, and Albert Matope, 40.



A day prior to the incident, Nelson Gomani allegedly approached a security guard at the farm, asking him to facilitate their entry into the premises.

The guard pretended to cooperate after being promised a cash reward but secretly alerted his supervisor, who in turn tipped off the police.

On the night of the theft, the suspects used a Toyota Corolla to access the premises and successfully loaded the chicks.

However, before they could escape, police officers who had laid an ambush emerged and apprehended them.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of breaking and theft.

Meanwhile, police commend the security guards for their cooperation and assure the communities of continued commitment to safeguarding property and ensuring that perpetrators of crime face justice.

Kunkuyu brands Chakwera a champion of infrastructure development

Minister of Information and Digitalization Moses Kunkuyu on Friday praised the Malawi leader,  President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s efforts, particularly in improving infrastructure, exemplified by the construction of durable roads that facilitate better connectivity, and economic opportunities for local communities.

Kunkuyu made these remarks at Kasumbu Trading Centre in Dedza where President Chakwera organized a whistle stop rally.

Kunkuyu, who is also a shadow Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament for Dedza Mlunduni – Kanyama Constituency, also expressed gratitude for the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) loans, which he said have made a significant impact by providing financial support to many people in his area.

“This assistance has likely empowered local entrepreneurs and helped stimulate economic growth,” Kunkuyu told the president.

Furthermore, Kunkuyu assured the community of his dedication to utilizing Constituency Development Fund (CDF) resources responsibly, ensuring that they serve their intended purpose for the benefit of the people.

In his remarks, President Chakwera urged the people to give him a second term of office to continue the development projects which he has already started.
