Minister of labour Agnes Nyalonje has urged Malawians to always put much of their focus on producing products that are of high quality so as to ensure that the nation is achieving excellence.

According to Nyalonje, as the country is going through difficult times, citizens must realize that there is a solution which can take the nation far and that is being productive weather as an individual, at household level or a nation as a whole.

Nyalonje

She was speaking this at Mount Soche hotel in Blantyre when she presided over the 4th edition of Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (ECAM) gala dinner awards.

“Now as the country this is the best time to focus on productivity this will help us weather as an individual or at household level even as a country.

“Indeed there is no any time to focus on productivity than when a country is facing turbulent times, there are several aspects to enhance productivity but the cheapest is the development of skilled and resilient labour force that can adapt to change, act innovatively by identifying new products and new processes that can help films to find new markets as well as be competitive.

“It is incurbetable to all of us including government to ensure that as a country we have ways of making sure that the industry is thriving through high productivity which is another way of high job creation.

“Ladies and gentleman no matter what mitigation policies are put in place to cushion Malawians from hardships that are facing currently, this will be in vein unless we are much productive and we are competitive with our neighbours, if well managed the labour sector is a source of our advantage weather you talk of enterprise level or industry level,” Nyalonje highlighted.

On her part, ECAM president, Annie Chavula noticed that this year has been very tough for employers with unstable business and economic environment, as employers witnessed a number of negative impacts including decreased productivity, financial stress and loss of customer confidence due to challenges in production and supply of products.

“Employer of the year awards, is a value-added service to our members that only brings a great opportunity for member organizations to have an external assessment.

“Through this, member organizations are able to identify areas of improvement and develop strategies for change to adapt to the economic environment,” she explained.

During the awards, Illovo sugar Malawi emerged as the largest employer whilst the employer of the year award went to Japan Tobacco International (JTI).

This year, the event was being held under the theme “Enhancing productivity in turbulent economic times”.

National IDs aren’t for elections only – Ken Zikhale Ng’oma

Minister of Homeland Security, Ken Zikhale Ng’oma says identity cards (IDs) issued by National Registration Bureau (NRB) are not there to be used for voting purposes only.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Ng’oma emphasised that the perception that IDs are only used for elections is wrong saying people use IDs for different purposes in the country.

“NRB is mandated to register people in Malawi either for birth or death and those who would want to vote for an election. NRB is an institution which was set with a purpose to ensure that every Malawian who is willing to have an ID should have it. It is an ongoing process.

Zikhale

“Issuing of IDs depends on people’s responses and if people are not going to register, what do you expect? So, how do you measure that the process is slow? This depends on ones’ interest. This is why I said it is a wrong perception to say that NRB is there for elections,” he said.

Zikhale Ng’oma was responding to remarks made by Member of Parliament (MP) for Thyolo South West, Chimwemwe Chipungu.

Chipungu suggested accommodating Traditional Authorities (TAs) as a centre for collecting IDs.

Ng’oma said this is a good development which government will look into.

Chipungu expressed concern that issuing of IDs is in its first phase out of six phases which, he said, is worrisome.

“I have raised these questions twice in this house regarding mass registration especially on children under 16 years of age. As you may recall, in 2021 this was launched at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) and the target was 8.4 million.

“According to the phases, the program was supposed to end in December 2023 but up to now only the first phase has been completed. We are worried and we don’t know government’s position on this,” he said.

Madame Chakwera launches a book titled a woman of noble character

By Cedric Nkungula

First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera on Friday 1st December 2023 launched a book titled a woman of noble character at a glamorous event held at Golden Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe.

Authored by Reverend Rebecca Banda, the book has been written based on Proverbs 31.

In her remarks, Madame Chakwera said the book comes in timely as a yardstick to guide women to ask themselves questions about the specific qualities that they need to continuously seek after, polish and emulate for the future generations that they desire.

“This book challenges us to remember that our characters are an open book to the younger generations. Whatever they become is our seed. This book also reveals to us of how the church is tasked with raising a generation of women that are reliable and beacons of hope for the younger generations,” she emphasized.

The first lady observed that it is pleasing to note that at the centre of the book is a message that is challenging women to discover their purpose in their respective societies, rise up to the occasion and embrace their potential as they trail blaze for the next generation.

“It’s a call to development of transcendent qualities that God requires for us women if we are to ably compliment leadership of our nation and indeed lead with impact in various positions of high authority in our societies,” she said.

Madame Chakwera said it is important that elderly women teach their children the characteristics of slothfulness and explain the difference between prosperous versus failing nations.

“It all starts with the nucleus family and the significant aspect of the diligent character of a mother,” added the first lady.

“This woman in Proverbs 31 demonstrates that women are capable, physically able, business smart, home makers and directly linked to the success of their husband and children. I, therefore, have every belief that women, regardless of the scale of their institutional influence, can be counted as critical stakeholders towards the Malawi 2063 goal of achieving an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant industrialized upper middle-income country through collective efforts.”

Taking her turn, Reverend Rebecca Banda said that the book is a tool for empowering and motivating underprivileged women and children to realize their full potential in society.

She thanked Madame Chakwera for availing herself to the book launch despite her tight schedule.

According to Pastor Banda, part of the proceeds from the book sales will go towards rehabilitation of the Chitipi Haven of Hope Lay Training Centre that is being run by the National Women Ministries of the Malawi Assemblies of God with the primary objective of developing entrepreneurial skills of vulnerable widows so that they become active contributors to the economic growth of their families and respective communities.

Ben Longwe says PAC now a Presidential Affairs Committee

By Vincent Gunde

A human rights activist based in South Africa Charles Ben Longwe, says the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has failed miserably to stand with Malawians hence no need to have the body to represent the wishes of Malawians that are in pain and suffering due to various challenges the country is sailing through.

He says PAC Executive members have been meeting President Lazarus Chakwera saying their discussions were centred on personal benefits as reported previously that they have been walking out of the State House pocketing khaki envelops.

He said the recent PAC meeting with President Chakwera has been proved to be a useless one as it had no blessings from the people observing that during their consultative meeting, PAC members were advised not to go to the state House until they assure Malawians that they will carry Malawians’ petition to deliver to President Chakwera that enough is enough, he must step down, a thing which did not happen.

Speaking through an audio clip circulating in various social media platforms, Longwe says Malawians have no trust in the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) and as such, they are mobilizing themselves to close PAC offices located at the City Centre in Lilongwe.

He says the recent Public Affairs Committee is Presidential Affairs Committee saying just as other public institutions; Malawi Defense Force (MDF), Malawi Police Service (MPS), Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB), are being controlled by President Chakwera.

He says in view of this, it is the wish of the suffering Malawians to see to it that the present PAC be relocated to State House as their new office and the office they are currently occupying at the City Centre, Malawians will decide who to employ and should not be men of God.

The activist says the journey to close PAC offices will not be announced, it will be made secret, the protesters will also pay a surprise visit to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) offices to be told of the reasons why elections will be held in September, 2025 not 21st May, 2024.

“We will have a special day, Malawians from Blantyre, Zomba, Mangochi, Mzuzu, Karonga will witness the closure of PAC offices and convincing reasons from Mec on the date of the elections in Malawi,” says Longwe.

He says PAC went to the State House to meet President Chakwera for him to change things in Malawi which is contrary to the views of the citizens that President Chakwera has failed and this is the time to honour his promise, to resign.

Longwe has however, expressed hope that Malawians who are in pain and suffering will not leave Malawi First of Redson Munlo and Ben Longwe alone but to support it until all the planned objectives to liberate the country from the shackles of the MCP dictatorship, are achieved.
