By Burnett Munthali

Three people have died and 41 others have been injured after heavy rains pounded various parts of Malawi, authorities say.

According to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), a total of 7,205 households, which translates to around 32,422 people, have been affected in 13 districts, including Blantyre, Chikwawa, and Lilongwe.

The affected areas are receiving aid, with food and non-food items being distributed, including maize, beans, and blankets, says Wilson Moleni, Commissioner for DoDMA.

Search and rescue operations are underway in Nsanje and Nkhotakota, with a national team on standby, according to Moleni.

“We are working with councils and partners to reach all affected people,” says DoDMA, highlighting the government’s efforts to respond to the disaster.

The heavy rains have brought significant challenges to the affected communities, with many people struggling to access basic necessities like food and shelter.

DoDMA is urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of the rains, which are expected to continue in the coming days.

The government is committed to providing support to those affected by the rains, and efforts are underway to assess the full extent of the damage.

As the situation continues to unfold, DoDMA is calling on partners and stakeholders to come together to support the response efforts.

The affected districts are in dire need of assistance, and every effort counts in ensuring that those impacted receive the help they need.

Musona Rescues Zimbabwe as Warriors Hold Angola in AFCON 2025 Draw

Zimbabwe came from behind to earn a valuable 1–1 draw against Angola in an entertaining AFCON 2025 Group B encounter played on Friday afternoon.

Angola, nicknamed the Black Antelopes, struck first through Gelson Dala, who finished calmly in the first half to give his side an early advantage. Dala’s goal rewarded Angola’s bright start, as they showed greater urgency and control in midfield during the opening stages of the match.

However, Zimbabwe refused to fold under pressure. Just before the half-time whistle, Knowledge Musona stepped up with his trademark composure to level matters for the Warriors, scoring in stoppage time to silence the Angolan momentum and send the teams into the break tied at 1–1.

The second half saw both sides push for a winner, but clear chances were limited as defensive discipline took center stage. Angola tried to exploit the wings, while Zimbabwe relied on counter-attacks led by their experienced attackers.

Despite the intensity, neither team managed to find the decisive goal, and the match ended in a stalemate. The result leaves both Angola and Zimbabwe with a single point, keeping their qualification hopes alive but under pressure heading into the final group matches.

For Zimbabwe, Musona’s goal once again highlighted his importance on the big stage, while Angola will feel they missed an opportunity to convert dominance into maximum points.

With Group B still wide open, both teams now turn their focus to their remaining fixtures, knowing that nothing less than a strong finish will secure a place in the knockout stages of AFCON 2025.

Political activist Bon Kalindo, has appreciated the spirit which has been demonstrated by Tadikira Mafubza, the step son of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, Stanley Chiwa, Norman Chisale, and others, for celebrating Christmas with inmates of Maula Prison in Lilongwe.

Kalindo said this is a good gesture that during this time of festive season, it is good to share a little one has to others, saying Tadikira and others, thought of sharing a little they have with the inmates of Maula prison encouraging them that this should not be the end.

He said next time, they should go to Chichiri, Zomba maximum and Mangochi Prisons to appreciate how prisoners are suffering that instead of the country’s prisons to be reformatory centres, they have turned into deathtraps.

Speaking through an audio clip, Kalindo said there visit to Maula Prison should not be taken as politics observing that people are serving prison sentences not because of politics and that they are neglected members in the society.

Kalindo has asked the new government of the DPP and President Professor Mutharika to look at the country’s prisons with a critical eye claiming that billions of Kwachas are being lost through feeding inmates while there are some who are not deserving to be fed in prison.

He has noted with a grave concern that Prisons in Malawi were built to accommodate the poor people, the rich do not spend months, they are released either on court bail pending appeal or receiving presidential pardons.

The activist said since the country’s prisons are congested with inmates some of whom do not deserve to be in prison, he has appealed to President Professor Mutharika that during this Christmas and New Year 2026 festive season, he should pardon many of those who committed minor offences such as stealing sugarcanes and chickens.

“It is my prayer that President Professor Mutharika will pardon many prisoners to celebrate Christmas and New Year 2026 festivities  with their loved ones outside prison,” said Kalindo.

Kalindo has warned the government to tread carefully on ESCOM employees employed from 2022 to 2025 and are being treated as temporary employees arguing that one cannot be a temporary employ for three years, saying if care is not taken, these people may take ESCOM to court and billions of Kwachas will be spent for compensations to them.

He said ESCOM is one of the institution in Malawi blanketed with corruption demanding the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) to investigate corruption related activities by its officers who pretend to be hiring vehicles owned by themselves describing this as corruption in the highest order.

The activist has finally asked government to come to the rescue of some people who applied for loans at NEEF, they paid all the moneys in advance as demanded in the conditions set by NEEF but up to this day, they have not received what they applied for.
