In an unexpected turn of events, friends and supporters of Kondwani Nankhumwa, the expelled former Presidential Advisor of the Malawi opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), have announced their intention to hold a vigil at Page House, where the party president Peter Mutharika resides.

The move comes as a show of solidarity against Nankhumwa’s recent expulsion from the party.

Since news broke of his removal from the DPP, Nankhumwa’s friends and allies have been vocal in their condemnation of the decision.

Many argue that the party’s decision was unjust, and they are determined to make their voices heard.

However, political commentators are warning Nankhumwa to tread carefully on his journey, advising his supporters to steer clear of any acts that may result in ugly scenes and harm his political career.

It is worth noting that there is some disagreement among Nankhumwa’s supporters regarding the vigil at Page House.

Critics argue that it is inappropriate to target the residence of the party president, as Peter Mutharika was not directly responsible for Nankhumwa’s expulsion.

Therefore, they maintain that it would be misguided to direct their protest towards him.

NAP condemns stoning of President Chakwera motorcade

National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has condemned stoning of the Presidential convoy which happened on Friday in Blantyre.

In a statement which NAP chairperson, Benedicto Kondowe has signed , the incident blatantly undermine the fundamental principles of democratic governance and the rule of law.

“These heinous acts not only jeopardize the lives of those directly affected but also blatantly undermine the fundamental principles of democratic governance and the rule of law. This incident stands as a stark violation of the security and well-being of the Head of State, representing an egregious affront to the democratic process and the constitutional order of Malawi, ” he said.

He says NAP resoundingly condemns the despicable act of obstruction and stoning that unfolded on 19th January 2024, directly targeting the convoy of the President of Malawi in Blantyre.

He said the mplications, Concerns, and Long-Term Ramifications Obstructing and stoning the presidential motorcade not only pose immediate threats to the safety
of the President but also set a perilous precedent, potentially leading to a deterioration of public order, instilling fear, and corroding trust in democratic institutions.

NAP has since recommended Government to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident, identifying and swiftly prosecuting those responsible for the obstruction and stoning of the presidential motorcade.

NAP has also urged Government to reinforce security measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, thereby ensuring the safety of high-profile individuals and safeguarding democratic processes.

“Champion public awareness campaigns, emphasizing the imperative of peaceful expression and unwavering adherence to the rule of law, ” he says.

NAP has also strongly asserts that the recently established Peace and Unity Commission must spearhead this initiative, with unwavering support from all stakeholders, including the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE)
Trust, civil society, political parties religious leaders, media and ordinary Malawians, in
order to cultivate a society that coexists harmoniously and steadfastly adheres to the rule of law.

Chakwera returns home after holding serious talks with DRC President

President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera returned home on Sunday evening following a bilateral meeting with Democratic Republic of Congo President, Felix Tshisekedi in the capital Kinshasa.

On the agenda were issues surrounding Malawi Defence Force soldiers currently on a peace keeping mission in Eastern DRC.

Thousands of Malawi Congress Party Supporters including cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament and several government defied the veil of darkness to welcome the first citizen.

Some of the renowned faces spotted at the airport include; UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati and the party’s spokesperson Hon Felix Njawala who were accompanied by tens of supoorters.

President Tshisekedi invited Chakwera to hold urgent in-person talks with him on regional security matters that affect Malawi Defence Force troops currently deployed for peacekeeping activities in the Eastern DRC.

MCP rebukes DPP for firing its members

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has accused Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for the recent firing of some of its members.

MCP says these actions by the largest opposition party undermine the democratic principles that underpin the importance of member consultation, participation, and tolerance in decision-making processes, as well as to the political rights and freedom of association that all Malawians are granted by the country’s constitution.

The message is contained in a statement which MCP Publicity Secretary Ezekiel Peter Ching’oma has signed and issued.

The statement further says these actions are undemocratic which are also undermining both democracy of our country as well as its principles urging that a party has to be open to dissenting opinions and ideas of its members and provide channels for constructive criticism, feedback and reconciliation.

“By summarily dismissing its members using a process that lacks transparency, the DPP has set a dangerous precedent that threatens the democratic fabric of our society,” reads part of the statement.

MCP is therefore calling upon leadership of DPP to live up to the principles of democracy and reconsider its actions and join other parties in Malawi in adopting a more inclusive and transparent spirit that is commensurate with the desire of Malawians for an inclusive democratic developmental state.

Political commentators have been accusing Peter Mutharika for failing to run the party affairs.
