For a long time Malawi has been operating without direct budgetary support following the withdrawal of donors in 2013.
This has brought challenges to Malawi such as shortage of essential drugs in hospitals as well as fuel.
President Chakwera
Just a few days ago Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera witnessed the signing of a grant agreement of $137 million which signified reinstatement of investor confidence in the economy and opens a new chapter in the enactment of serious policy reforms for restoring the short-term macroeconomic stability and medium-term growth.
This grant is so important because several times the president has repeatedly said under his tutelage Malawi should sustain donor and investor confidence in building a new Malawi
There is need for the private sector to support the Government since it is the engine of building the national economy.
A few days ago President Peter Mutharika held Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) National Governing Council (NGC) meeting at Mkopola Lodge in Mangochi.
In his speech, Mutharika rebuked one of his NGC members, Ken Msonda for being critical of his leadership.
Again Mutharika invited Msonda to leave the party if he continues criticising the party’s leadership. In the first place , any leadership should be ready to face criticism at all costs. If Mutharika cannot withstand criticism let him resign from the party Presidency and allow the one who can withstand the hit takeover.
Mutharika
Mutharika being the lawyer himself would have been aware of some section of the law which allows freedom of conscience.
Again , Mutharika invited Msonda to leave the party. Msonda never applied to Mutharika to join the party. In Malawi no one applies to join the party and Mutharika does not own DPP and will never own the party. DPP is a political party as such being a party it is run by the NGC.
Mutharika should be able to know the difference between a family and a political property in this case he should stop intimidating members.
Mutharika lied again that many people have approached him to stand as presidential candidate in 2025 as well as to stand and continue running the party as its president. The simple question is which people have been going to Mutharika on this issue.
No one can persuade Mutharika to stand because of his age. Mutharika deserves to rest and enjoy his retirement.

Kazombo emphasised that the media should report on the county’s scenic places as well as wildlife.

On his part, Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) director of broadcast Zadziko Makhambo challenged journalists to embrace the digital sphere.
He said: “Don’t just be a photojournalist or videographer but also be able to write stories as well as be conversant with social media platforms to ably reach to all media consumers,” he said.
YONECO Executive Director MacBain Mkandawire urged the journalists to critically manage their social status and ‘money’ prudently.
“Build more assets than liabilities in life regardless of your income by managing your spending habits,” he said.
The new leadership is expected to run the club for the next three years.
