Former finance minister Goodall Gondwe dies

Death has been announced of Former Finance Minister Goodall Gondwe, who was also northern region Vice President for the former governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

According to DPP Treasurer General and Rumphi North Legislator Jappie Mhango, Gondwe, 87,passed on Tuesday evening in Lilongwe.

While details remain sketchy, Mhango told local media this morning that Gondwe had a fruitful discussion with DPP members at his residence in Lilongwe, until around 8pm on Tuesday.

“He called us to talk about unity in the party and the direction that we need to take. I left around 8pm. However, I was called late in the evening around 10pm that he was not feeling well.

“We took him to Adventist Hospital, where doctors told us that he was already dead when he got there. We have lost a pillar and I am, speechless. He was a father to me,”says Mhango.


Gondwe served as a Cabinet Minister during the DPP administration both under late President Professor Bingu Wa Mutharika and immediate past President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

The University of London graduate held several local and international portfolios. Such include Acting President for the African Development Bank (ADB), Senior Advisor to the Managing Director for the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Minister of Local Government and Chief Economic Advisor to former Malawi leader Dr Bakili Muluzi.

His track record shows that in 2008, Gondwe was voted Africa’s Finance Minister of the Year at the African Banker Awards held in Washington DC, USA

He hailed from Kayiwonanga Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mtwalo in Mzimba.

Jesse Jendah mourned as Malawian Reggae lovers pays tribute

It was in the late 90’s when the Malawi government had freed up the airwaves to allows private radio stations to open up . One such radio was Power 101 FM , the radio that quickly became known for its strong links with Jamaican music Industry. Various Jamaican artists came to perform and among them was Jesse Jendah also known as Congo Bongo, the artist who quickly connected with the locals and whose death on Tuesday 8th August 2023 has shocked Many Malawians

It has been reported that Jesse Jendah has passed away. A native of Clarendon, Jamaica Jesse has been recording music since the 1980s.Jesse was also a member of Philip ‘Fattis’ Burrell’s Xterminator camp back in the 1990s, along with Luciano and Sizzla

Ras Ray Harawa one of the Rastafarian elders in Malawi said Jendah’s death was a blow since the musician not only brought Jamaica to Malawi, but also took Malawi to the world through his music.

“He has internationally acclaimed songs where he talks about the beauty of Malawi, like Rasta Empress. Although he was born in Jamaica and mostly lived in America, Malawi was his home. He was part of our family as Malawians and the rasta community,” said Harawa.

Founder and owner of Power FM 101 Mr Oscar Thomson who was instrumental in bringing Jendah to Malawi described Jendah’s death as a blow since his music not only brought Jamaica to Malawi, but also took Malawi to the world through his music and also a person who made the station one of the best across the world.

“As a DJ at Power FM 101,Jendah Populized the Station back in the days when the country had only one private Radio Station,I was touched hearing of his demise and I will always miss his inborn talent”.Thomson who is currently abroad said.

There has been no other details surrounding his death and funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Apart from his music , Jendah was is also remembered in Jamaica as the Reggae artist who, in the summer of 1999, infamously offered a quarter pound of Westmoreland high-grade ganja to former Prime Minister PJ Patterson, to inspire him to pursue cannabis tourism, while the herb was still criminalized in Jamaica

He was who was known for songs such as Rasta Empress, Mark of the Beast, Reparation, Leonard Howell, Rothschild Crash Bank, Weed Free, Kween Of The Morning Star, Rasta Love and the single Zomba Mountain. Jesse also worked with local artist Limbani Banda and featured in some of the songs from his Chisoni Mkumatenda album

House maid behind bars for stealing her boss’s items

Police in Kanengo Lilongwe are keeping in custody a 42-year-old lady identified as Flora Thom from Nangumi Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Chimaliro in Thyolo for allegedly stealing from her employer.

According to the employer, Jacob Mderu, in June this year, he employed Thom as a housemaid at his house in Area 49.



Yesterday, August 6, 2023, he and other family went to church leaving the suspect home.

While he was still at church, Thom hired a motor vehicle and packed assorted items worth over K2 million. But before she left, a boy who was then at a neighbor arrived and immediately informed Mderu.

Following a report, police rushed to the scene and rescued the suspect from some angry people.

Police also recovered all the items which include furniture, food stuffs, beddings, Plasma TV screen and assorted clothes.

Thom is expected to appear in court soon.

Meanwhile, police are reminding people of the need to be careful and cautious when employing house servants to avoid further incidents of this nature.

Barber arrested for stealing 14 cell phones in Mzimba*

A 27-year-old Mickson Kwenda is in police custody at Jenda in Mzimba on suspicion that he stole 14 cellphones of his clients at his barbershop.

Jenda police station Public Relations Officer (PRO) Macfarlane Mseteka has confirmed of the development saying Kwenda was employed on August 1, 2023 as a barber and, three days later, he received 14 cellphones for charging.

“Around lunch time Kwenda told his boss Emmanuel Shaba to buy chips. Taking advantage that Shaba was away, Kwenda took all the 14 phones and vanished. The phones were valued at K1.6 million.

“The matter was reported both at Jenda Police station Jenda roadblock. Acting on the information Jenda police through the roadblock apprehended the suspect and all 14 cellphones were immediately recovered from him,” says Mseteka.

He says therefore, Kwenda has been charged with theft by servant which is contrary to section 286 of the penal code and he will appear before court soon.

K Banton releases the most anticipated single ‘Adani’ featuring his brother Shammah Vocals

Rapper K Banton has released his long awaited single titled ‘Adani’ featuring his elder brother Shammah Vocals.

The song which has been produced by Macia was released on Monday evening and was premiered inside Made On Monday program on MBC Radio 2 FM

All the verses have been done by K Banton and the chorus has been beautifully crafted by Shammah Vocals.

Part of the song’s Chorus goes….

“Amakondwerera ndikagwa
Zikamandiyendera amasowa Mtendere/
Amanditcherera misampha/
Samadziwa amandikondera Mulungu/….”

Commenting on Facebook, Wisdom Thomson thinks K Banton and Shammah’s collabo is so far the best this year.

“Best collabo Chaka chino nd iyiyi,” he wrote.

Another music follower, Phillip Saikonde wrote;

“Sounds so nice got to play it twice, wow this is the hit to listen to almost daily keep it up guys.”

Popular photographer Isaac Chigwati Chigwale thinks that the song is too good and advised the two to release an EP together.

He said, “Shamma Vocals and K Banton might as well just drop a joint tape.”

In 2017, the two brothers, real names, Khumbo and Shammah Sitola also joined forces in a song titled “Alipo” which received massive airplay in different platforms.
