Karonga accident saddens President Chakwera

The accident that occurred at Tenenthe along Karonga Chitipa road on Saturday, 3rd June, 2023 has saddened State President, Lazarus Chakwera, saying as a nation the death of 24 and several others who have been injured is of great shock, hence a need to unite together in prayers and calling upon the Lord to bring comfort to the bereaved families and recovery to the injured.

Speaking at Nyungwe Primary School in Karonga on Monday, 5th June, 2023 when he represented President Chakwera at the sombre sendoff of 24 bodies of those who died during the fatal accident, Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale said President Chakwera is so touched that the nation has lost 24 of its citizens of which many were youths in such a tragedy.

“President Chakwera is so much saddened by the death of 24 people and the several others who have been injured following the accident on Saturday.

He is aware of the pains and grief that the bereaved families are passing through, hence his heartfelt condolences.



Further, Kawale said the President is thankful to the Regional Commissioner for police and the entire Police service, and health officials for Karonga DHO for their commitment since the tragedy occurred.

In his remarks the Minister of Youth and Sports said sports is instrumental in unity and development of the country, hence losing people who were ambassadors for unity and development is a great shock.

He then thanked President Chakwera for directing the Ministry of Local Government, and Department of Disaster Management (DoDMA) to work hand in hand with his Ministry in such a trying moment.

The Speaker of the National Assembly who also spoke during the sendoff of the 24 bodies said it is shocking and heartbreaking to lose a mass of 24 at once. But she thanked people of Karonga and Chitipa for coming together in unity regardless of their affiliations in the society.

In his mourning remarks,
Paramount chief Kyungu of Chitipa and Karonga asked the government to ban the use of open vehicles whenever people are travelling for long distances, saying it puts the lives of many people at risk.

Paramount Kyungu then concurred with senior chief Mwelan’gombe in thanking President Lazarus Chakwera for quickly coming in with food, coffins, and transport assistance during the tragedy.

President Chakwera has since condole the bereaved families with K7.5 Million Kwacha.

Among those who attended the ceremony include, Harry Mlekanjala Mkandawire, Owen Chomanika, Catherine Gotani Hara, Uchizi Mkandawire, Richard Msowoya, Frank Mwenifumbo, Paramount Chief Kyungu, the clergy, and Water Nyamilandu.

Diamonds and Tigresses continue to shine in Rainbow Paints Netball League

Kukoma Diamonds and rivals First Choice Tigresses registered massive victories in the fourth week of the Rainbow Paints Netball League on Saturday, as the battle for maximum points continues.

Diamonds massacred Gerald Tasaukadala and Chileka Queens 98-15 and 118-10 respectively.

On the other hand, Tigresses finished the weekend with ruthless 76-29 and 55-23 victories over Chilomoni Sisters and Blantyre Tremors.

The wins means that the two sides are tied on 10 points having played and won similar number of games but Diamonds are top on the log table as they have a superior goal difference.


Imosyc NC are on position three with six points from four games followed by Airforce who are perched on number four with the same points from the same number of games

Machinjiri Sisters, Gerald Tasaukadala, Chilomoni Sisters and MUBAS are anchoring the log table with no points

Grace Chazungulira of Kukoma Diamonds tops the scorers chart with 151 goals followed by First Goice Tigresses’ Brenda Kapira who has so far scored 146 goals.

Kukoma Diamonds’ veteran player Jesca Sanudi in on position three with 126 goals while Blantyre Tremors’ Edna Nantchengwa who has been commanding the scorers chart since the start of the season, in now fourth with 121 goals.

Meanwhile, the battle for maximum points will continue next weekend but Diamonds and Tigresses will not be in action as they have contributed more players to Malawi Queens.

Stain Davie take Silver Strikers top with win over KB, Wanderers go level on points with Bullets after beating Karonga United 2-1

Stain Davie scored his seventh goal this season for Silver Strikers as they beat Kamuzu Barracks 1-0 to go top of the league.

Davie broke the deadlock 20 minutes in the first half with a simple tap in after Kamuzu Barracks goalkeeper blocked Chimwemwe Idana’s first attempt .

After the match, Idana who was voted Silver’s best player last month, was voted man of the match.

The win means that the central bankers have now accumulated 18 points from eight games, just a point above defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets and third placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers

In Karonga, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers scored a goal in each half to claim a 2-1 win against Karonga United.

Defender Lawrence Chaziya scored the earliest goal for the visitors as he headed home a Stanley Sanudi well taken free kick just 2 minutes into the game.

The home side leveled the scores six minutes in the second half through Alfred Chizinga who capitalized on defensive blunder by Chaziya.

Isaac Kaliati scored the winning goal for the Nomads with brilliant free kick 65 minutes in the second half to ensure maximum points for the Lali-Lubani boys.

After the match, Karonga United captain Eric Atsiga was voted man of the match.

The win mean that Wanderers are now level on 17 points with city rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets but the People’s team have a superior goal difference.

At Mpira Stadium in Blantyre, an early goal from Mphatso Magaleta was enough to grant Ekwendeni Hammers maximum points as they beat Mighty Tigers 1-0

Magaleta who is on loan to the northern region outfit from Nyasa Big Bullets, scored after capitalizing on a defensive lapse in Tigers defense just three minutes in the first half.

Elsewhere, Dedza Dynamos beat Civil Service United 2-1 in an entertaining match played at Dedza Stadium.

Edward Dakalira and Clement Nyondo were on target for the home side while Muhammad Biason scored the consolation for the visitors.

Malawi Police warns refugees who are returning to cities from Dzaleka

Malawi Police Service (MPS) has warned all refugees who are returning to cities and towns after being relocated to Dzaleka Refugee Camp.

This follows a week of relocating refugees in some parts of Malawi such as Blantyre and Lilongwe.



In a statement, MPS is also sending a warning to Malawians who are interfering with security agencies by harbouring the returning of the refugees.

“The country is built on a solid foundation at respect of rule of law,” the part of the MPS statement.

The operation of relocating refugees is still taking place across the country.
