Mangochi’s teacher Michael Nkhata arrested for swindling K850,000 meant for examination fees

A 39-year-old teacher at Mkumba Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Mangochi Michael Nkhata is in police custody for allegedly pocketing K850,000 meant for examination fees for 20 Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) and 20 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) candidates.

His arrest comes barely two weeks after two individuals were also arrested in the district for fraudulently obtaining money from Standard Eight learners meant for Primary School Leaving Certificate Examination fees.

According to Mangochi Police Station spokesperson, Amina Tepani Daudi Nkhata during the month of January 2023 was assigned to help form two and four candidates in paying examination fees through the e-payment system.

On May 25, 2023 the headteacher for the said school discovered that 20 candidates were missing on the JCE subjects verification document which was sent from Malawi National Examination Board (Maneb).

“The headteacher realised that the suspect failed to dispatch the funds he collected.

“This prompted him to request for an MSCE subjects verification document in advance. Similarly, he also discovered that 20 candidates were not registered on the sheet,” explained Daud.

She the matter was reported to Masuku Police Unit, who promptly apprehended the suspect.

“During interrogation, the accused person admitted to have diverted the funds for personal use,” she added.

Regrettably, the affected students will not be able to sit for this year’s JCE and MSCE examinations as MANEB said the anomaly was not discovered in time for them to help in addressing the issue.

The suspect has since been charged with theft which contravenes section 278 of the Penal Code and will appear before court next week, according to the police.

RSA legal team in Malawi for Bushiri’s extradition case proceedings

South African legal team led by officials from the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development(DJCD) is in the country to participate in the extradition case of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary which is scheduled for May 30, 2023.

The officials include senior and experienced prosecutors from the National Prosecuting Authority(NPA), the Investigative Directorate (ID)and investigators from South African Police Service.


According to a statement issued by South Africa’s Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services, which 247 Malawi has in possession, the Department of Justice is leading the group in fulfilling its role as a central authority which has the responsibility of receiving, managing and executing extradition requests.

The statement which has been signed by the Ministry’s spokesperson Chrispin Phiri reads in part:”On February 13, 2023, the Malawi High Court in its judgment indicated that section 6 of the Extradition Act of Malawi clarified that the witnesses or relevant witnesses to a preliminary inquiry/extradition hearing are those witnesses who will be able to answer and convince the Court conducting the inquiry on section 6 of the Malawi Extradition Act.”

The Bushiris are answering criminal charges in South Africa where they fled in November 2020 while on bail, and South African authorities are seeking their extradition to face trial.

First Lady Chakwera appeals for more help to alleviate classroom shortages

First Lady, Madame Monica Chakwera, presided over the official handover of a classroom block worth K54 million at Kabuthu Teacher’s Development Centre (TDC) Primary School in Nsaru, Lilongwe.

Speaking during the ceremony, Madame Chakwera commended the efforts of Co-Africa through the Build a classroom Initiative, as it will help alleviate the shortage of classrooms and promote girls’ education in the country.

The First Lady further appealed to other organizations to come forward and assist the government in constructing more classroom blocks across the county to improve the quality of education.

First Lady flanked by Education Minister Madalitso Wirima.



“This is a significant milestone in our education sector, and I am honored to be part of such development,” said Chakwera.

In her remarks, Minister of Education, Madalitso Wirima, said her ministry will continue to construct modern classroom blocks to accommodate the current population nationwide and promote quality education.

“The government will do everything possible to ensure that schools in the country have sufficient classroom blocks for learners to thrive in a conducive environment,” She said.

Member of Parliament for the area, Monica Chiyang’anamuno expressed appreciation for the timely initiative and commended the First Lady for promoting girls’ education through the Shaping Our Future Foundation initiatives.

Representing the donor, Goodwell Ndiwo Banda, stated that his organization will continue constructing classroom blocks across the country as a means of enhancing the quality of education. He further mentioned that Co-Africa has already constructed five classroom blocks, with more to be expected.

The project has been funded by Co-Africa through Build a Classroom initiative, with a sum of K51 million, while the remaining K3 million came from the Constituency Development Fund.

Young Man’s Generous Donation Enhances Crime Prevention Efforts in Limbe Town

Innocent Kananji, a 26-year-old resident of Anderson village in the area of Traditional Authority Sawali in Balaka district, has made a remarkable contribution to the security infrastructure of Limbe town.

Inspired by a television program on Mibawa TV highlighting the importance of CCTV cameras in crime prevention, Kananji generously donated a sum of K110,000 towards the purchase of CCTV camera connectors.

Motivated by a deep sense of civic duty, Kananji made the journey from Balaka to Limbe to present his donation. He expressed his belief that as a citizen of Malawi, it was his responsibility to support the efforts of Limbe Police in ensuring public safety. His hope was to inspire others to follow suit and contribute towards similar initiatives that benefit their communities.



Upon receiving the donation, Mr. Gladson Chipumphula (DCP), the officer in charge of Limbe Police, conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to Kananji. He acknowledged the timeliness of the contribution and assured Kananji that the donated amount would be utilized for its intended purpose.

In addition, he called upon other well-wishers to emulate Kananji’s generosity, emphasizing that the Malawi Police Service greatly relies on the support and collaboration of citizens in the fight against crime.

According to sergeant Aubrey Singanyama ,Limbe Police Public Relations Officer, Police has been actively utilizing CCTV cameras as part of their comprehensive strategy to prevent and combat crime in the town. These cameras have proven to be effective tools in deterring criminal activities and enhancing the investigation process.

Kananji’s donation of CCTV connectors will greatly contribute to the efficiency of the control room at Limbe Police station, enabling seamless connectivity and facilitating real-time monitoring of the town’s surveillance network.

TNM Super League: Chitipa stun Wanderers, takes all 3 points at Kamuzu Stadium

An 82nd-minute own goal by Miracle Gabeya earned Chitipa United maximum points as they defeated Mighty Mukuru Wanderers 1-0 at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Gabeya’s own goal was enough to grant the McDonald Mtetemera’s side the precious three points as the former FCB Nyasa Big Bullets defender headed the ball into his own goal while trying to clear a Lorenzo Ghedo’s corner kick.

The game began in a comfortable fashion for the Nomads, with Misheck Botomani and Felix Zulu getting lots of possession in midfield, but failing to threaten George Chikooka in the Chitipa United goal.



The visitors however, looked more composed as the match went on, and given the gulf between the two teams in terms of skill and experience, it was a good first half performance by the Chitipa-based side.

In the second half, Wanderers made a number of substitutions, bringing in Chiukepo Msowoya for Vincent Nyangulu and Mathews Masamba for Isaac Kaliati.

In the 52nd minute, the league’s leading scorer Christopher Kumwembe sustained a knee injury forcing Wanderers to replace him with Mphatso Kamanga.

On the other hand, Chitipa took off Mabuchi Msiska who was replaced by Aaron Kayira in the 55th minute.

Wanderers made a fourth substitution in the 66th minute replacing Misheck Botomani with Vitumbiko Kumwenda but still this did not yield anything as the Nomads failed to find the back on the net.

After the match, Chitipa United captain Chris Lwemba was named Man of the Match.

The result means that Wanderers have missed an opportunity to go top as they are stuck on second position with 14 points, level with leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets but the People’s team have a chance to increase their lead at the top as they meet the struggling Red Lions on Sunday.

On the other hand, Chitipa have moved to fifth on the log table with 10 points after playing seven games just like fellow northern region side, Karonga United.

Karonga drew 1-all against Ekwendeni Hammers at Mzuzu Stadium with goals from Davie Tobias and Mphatso Magaleta respectively.

In Dwangwa, Mafco FC came from behind to claim a 2-1 win against rookies Extreme FC at Chitowe Stadium.

Yohane Malunga and Bernard Chimayimba were on target for the Salima-based soldiers while Justice Honde scored for Extreme FC.

On Sunday, Silver Strikers will be looking forward to get back to winning ways following a series of draws as they host Bangwe All Stars at Silver Stadium.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets will host Red Lions at Kamuzu Stadium as Dedza Dynamos welcomes Mighty Tigers at Dedza Stadium.

Moyale Barracks will play Blue Eagles at Mzuzu Stadium and Civil Service United will host Kamuzu Barracks at Civo Stadium.
