Ken Lipenga Jr, Mustafa Hussein promoted to the rank of Proffessor

The University of Malawi ( UNIMA) has announced the promotion of two of Malawi’s brains. Ken Lipenga Jr (a son to politician Dr.Ken Lipenga) and a political commentator Dr. Musatfa Hussein to the rank of professor.

According to the UNIMA Vice Chancellor Professor Samson Sajidu, the promotion of the two follows the approval by the University of Malawi Council.

He says the promotion is effective February 14,2023.

” Please join me in congratulating the distinguished members of staff for their outstanding achievements,” says Sajidu.

Hussein is a seasoned facilitator, trainer and researcher with vast experience in various areas including leadership, strategic manage­ment and politics.

Specifically, he has authored numerous academic articles on decentralization in Malawi.

While Lipenga Jr, is a Post-colonial literatures Lecture at the University of Malawi.

He has published on Malawian music, African literature, disability studies and postcolonial literature; disability and folklore; children’s literature, oral literature, and African life writing.

Zambia’s Manchester United fan in cooler over scamming in Malawi

Malawi Police in Mangochi are keeping in custody a 28-year-old Zambian national identified as Ibrahim Maxwell Mustafa, on suspicion that he has been stealing from various women through Facebook.

Mangochi Police Station Spokesperson, Sub-Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi, confirmed of the Mustafa’s arrest in a statement on Tuesday saying he arrested on February 20, 2023, in the district where he went to trick a nurse who works at the district’s hospital.

According to Daudi, the suspect arrived in Mangochi on February 20, 2023 with a mission to trick a nurse who works at the Maternity Wing.

However,he was caught up in a trick by another nurse whom he previously tricked and stole two cellphones from.

“According to our findings, the suspect who bares “Ibrahim Maxwell” as Facebook username is settled in Zomba and had been targeting well-to-do women on Facebook by offering them love.

“When love blossoms, the suspect would request to meet the victim and steal their valuables especially money, laptops and phones,” stated Daudi.

She said the suspect who is also wanted by Zomba, Dedza and Chiradzulu Police formations for committing similar offences will appear before court to answer charges of theft after completion of paperwork.

Govt sends warning shoot against unlawful use of protected flag, emblem and names

The government has issued a warning shoot to some individuals and organizations who are unlawfully using the protected flag, emblems, names, colours for their brands promotion.

In a statement, secretary to the President and Cabinet Colleen Zamba says the use of the mentioned features without a valid permission contravenes the Protected Flag Emblems and Names Act of the Laws of Malawi.

” The general public is hereby informed that it is an offence under Section 5 of the Act to use, display or permit to be displayed, manufacture, sell, offer for sell, import or produce protected emblems without written permission of the Minister responsible for the adminstration of the Act.

” The office of President and Cabinet, is, therefore, calling upon the general public especially those individual, organizations or otherwise who are using,displaying, manufacturing, selling, offering for sell, importing or producing the protected emblems, colours, names, and likeness without written permission from the Minister in accordance with Section 5 of the Protected Flag, Emblems and Names Act to desist from the malpractice. “

The SPC says, the law shall apply to any person, organization or otherwise who shall contravene the Act in this regard.

24-year-old Martin Manyozo selected for 2023 Big Brainstorm

Through his project called ‘ Clean Cities Project, a 24-year-old social entrepreneur Martin Manyozo has been selected to be part of this year’s Big Brainstorm by United Nations Foundation.

The Big Brainstorm is an opportunity for young thinkers and activists to design their future.

The initiative brings together young leaders from around the world to embark on a two week design sprint to explore, prototype, and launch initiatives to tackle some of humanity’s greatest challenges.

Speaking in an interview, Manyozo said he is overjoyed and thrilled to hear that his project has been selected for the Big Brainstorm.

“It is an honor to compete at an international level with fellow young leaders from around the world.

“It is now or never, we are the generation that must bring about transformation and change the course of the planet while safeguarding the needs of the next generation.

“It is a big win to have our project considered since there were 3000 applications from other young leaders from all over the world,” said Manyozo.

Manyozo further explained about his project Clean Cities saying it is a project which seeks to contribute to Climate and Sustainability in Malawi and abroad.

“Our project aims at contributing to the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals; SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), and SDG 12 (Improved Consumption and Production).

“This is a significant project that we hope will transform the value chain for waste management in Malawi and around the world,” he explained.

He revealed that his future plan is to expand his project’s operations model into Waste collection in all the cities in Malawi and recycling both inorganic waste and organic waste materials.

“The inorganic waste (plastic waste) will be recycled into eco-building materials such as eco-bricks, tiles, and concrete and the organic waste will be recycled to produce eco-friendly Charcoal briquettes and organic fertilizer (manure) and we hope to contribute to the social economic growth in Malawi and contribute to the climate and Sustainability in Malawi and the sub Saharan Africa,” he said.

Manyozo said he will use the skills he will gain from the Big Brainstorm initiative for
Networking , skills in project management, mentorship and monetary support.

The 2023 Big Brainstorm will take place virtually between February 16-28 under the theme “A Year of Action for the SDGs,”.

It will provide an opportunity to accelerate action to solve the world’s most urgent problems ahead of the second Sustainable Development Goals Summit, with young people at the forefront of change.

Macelba, Provoice to release a thanks giving song after surviving a serious road accident

Urban musicians Macelba and Provoice have revealed plans to release a thanks giving song to God for saving their lives after a serious car accident that claimed two lives on December 4 last year.

According to Provoice, the song is titled Mwandikweza and has been produced by Caff – B and Macia.

In a Facebook post the “Tunduma” hit maker said he was very thankful to God for giving the two an opportunity to continue entertaining their fans.

“Last year on 4 December I and Macelba Marley were involved in a car accident that almost took our lives , I am incredibly grateful for the second chance I have been given by God.

I am thankful to have been able to work with Macelba on a song we are about to release titled Mwandikweza.”

“This song is a reminder to never take life for granted and to cherish every moment we have. RIP to the Friends we lost,” said Provoice.

The accident happened in Dedza district when the two artists were coming from a music show in Zomba city.

The driver of the vehicle they were traveling in and the pedestrian sustained severe head injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Dedza District Hospital.

Macelba, real-name Smart Mazaka Banda escaped with minor bruises and was treated as an outpatient while Provoice sustained a fractured pelvic and was referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe where he received further treatment.

For Provoice, real name Lameck Mwenewanda this was the second accident in a space of one year as he was also involved in another accident in 2021 when he was coming from Hangout Festival in Salima.
