President Chakwera brings joy to people of Zomba, completes construction of modern hospital

By Linda Kwanjana

Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera Government has finally completed construction of Zomba District Hospital.

The completion of this project will help to ease the lives of people from the old capital in terms of access to health.

Currently people in Zomba are praising Chakwera for this enormous development.

Speaking during his state of the nation address (SONA), Chakwera told Malawians that his Government is more willing and committed to change health landscape in the country which has suffered due to underfunding.

Chakwera said his Government has already successfully installed 894 solar direct drive fridges, constructed cold rooms in Zomba, Mzimba South and Mangochi districts, installed 35 solar backup power systems at district vaccine stores, and procured vaccine refrigerated vehicles.

President Chakwera has successfully delivered the promise of establishing the Public Health Emergency Operating Centre (PHEOC) which is now fully functional as a command centre for supporting emergency response efforts in the event of any crisis, including Polio, Covid 19 and Cholera.

Chakwera Government has managed more success stories which include reducing new HIV infections and reached the UNAIDS treatment targets.

Chakwera Government target was to reduce new HIV infections from 33,000 to 11,000 between 2019 and 2025, and as of today, the reduced new infections remains at 17,700.

The current Government apart from infrastructure development has managed to make remarkable progress in
efforts to reach the UNAIDS 95-95-95 treatment targets and currently, Malawi is at 95-99-94 on these targets.

Currently, Malawi target of reducing maternal deaths to 350 per 100,000 live births is on course.

Since February 2022, Malawi has trained 523 skilled birth attendants in Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care
and procured 74 ambulances with ORT funds and 76 with support from the Global Fund.

At the same time these efforts have led to a reduction in maternal deaths to 349
per 100,000 live births, according to UNICEF.

The good news does not end there regarding family planning, in the past two years, Malawi has conducted training and mentorship programs for 489 pharmacy personnel and service providers in supply chain management and logistics.

This has increased the modern
contraceptive prevalence rate from 38.1% in 2012 to 62.1% for married women in 2022.

All good news cited above compounded by completion of Zomba Hospital signifies how committed President Chakwera is in improving health sector.

Why Chakwera will win in 2025

As the country draws closer to the 2025 Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections, one question that keeps popping up in offices, churches, mosques, minibuses, bars and many public places is who will win the presidential race.

Without fear of contradiction, President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera will win the elections with a clear percentage contesting on the Malawi Congress party (MCP) ticket.
Here are the reasons why President Chakwera will definitely and convincingly win the elections in 2025.

I have said several times that MCP is a conservative party and as such, it is very difficult to shake its support base. Since MCP is not a populist party, it is easy for opponents to write it off on paper.
When it became apparent that veteran politician and long-time serving senior MCP member, John Tembo was retiring from the partys leadership position, the opponents thought that was the end of the oldest party.

Little did political opponents know that was the birth of a renewed and transformed Malawi Congress Party. The opponents did not see President Chakwera coming with a new philosophy.
At the time some senior members of MCP rebelled against the leadership, some people thought the end of MCP had come; little did they know that the party was undergoing a cleansing process and that it will emerge even stronger.

There are many examples of turbulent experiences that the MCP has gone through and political opponents celebrated thinking the party will finish like curtains only to amass many parliamentary seats in the 2019 elections and win the 2020 fresh presidential elections.
As already alluded to, MCP is not a populist party and therefore, it does not make noise about its strength as the largest political party with permanent structures across the country.

Under the leadership of President Chakwera, several big development projects have mushroomed and others completed. The fact that these are not highly publicized on various media platforms does not mean Malawians are not aware of them.
The development projects are taking place right in the communities where voters live. These developments such as roads, railways, hospitals, schools, houses for security agencies, and water projects in Karonga and Mangochi just to mention a few, are visible and are serving people.
It is obvious that the country is going through some challenges and they are not unique to Malawi.

President Chakwera took the government at a very difficult time when the world was under siege with the Covid-19 pandemic. As this was not enough problem, Malawi was attacked by tropical cyclones Ana and Gombe.
The war in Ukraine has not helped matters as prices for essential goods and services have gone up. Tropical Cyclone Freddy has caused the worst devastation in Malawi and preliminary assessment shows that full recovery will require millions of US dollars.
However, despite all these challenges, the Chakwera administration is delivering. Lilongwe City is a construction site, the M1 Road is under reconstruction, the railway line rehabilitated in Nsanje and Zomba Central Hospital has been renovated.

The crowd that flocked the Kasungu Township to watch the tarring of the municipality’s road is a clear testament that under Chakwera, Malawians are experiencing new things.
Nonetheless, the absence of bragging by the MCP does not make the party or Chakwera unpopular. From where I am standing, I do not see any candidate snatching the presidency from Chakwera in 2025.

YAS calls on Government to be transparent on handling refugees issues

By Dean Chisambo

Youth And Society (YAS) has called upon the government to be transparent and accountable when it is handling refugee issues even when it comes to deportation of individuals suspected of committing crimes in their countries of origin.

Speaking during the orientation meeting with the Civil Society organizations (CSO’s) and the media in Lilongwe, YAS executive director Charles Kajoloweka said government must act within the law inorder to avoid back door extradition of refugees in this country and laws have to be respected and they believe government has obligation to respect the rights of those suspected committing a crime in their country of origin and the rights of those that have been relocated to Mdzaleka camp.

Kajoloweka said :” the whole refugees relocation exercises has resulted into cases of police officers extorting from the victim’s, stealing from the victims and cases of sexual violence that has been registered.

Charles Kajoloweka

“People have lost their properties because of forced relocation exercises and there is no justification whatsoever that the government has started this violation, we hope individuals behind this violation should be held accountable and the government has an obligation to ensure that it respects and protects the rights of refugees in this country.”

He further said that government decisions must be within the law and they must also pay attention to the human right obligation that Malawi has to people as well as international law.

Kajoloweka also said some of the sentiments made by the government must be supported by evidence otherwise they become empty rhetoric hence some of the sentiments that come from the government through Minister of Homeland security could be regarded as insunuating xenophobic attacks or violence against foreigners.

He added that it is only assumption that there is the warlords from Rwanda pretending to be refugees because government does not promise any evidence saying the fear is that lack of transparency from government is also a recipe for the violation of rights of the people suspected committed crimes in their countries of origin.

On his remarks human rights activist lawyer Alexisus Kamangira said the rule of law should take order where the people have broken the law of the nation, should be treated according to the law saying what they have seen is the opposite where the government is making allegations that there are people in this country that are illegal immigrants and the same government is treating these people illegally.

He said:” We have alot of examples where people have been abused, how women have been raped there are so many things. As we speak we are talking about Mdzaleka which is a camp that is refugees are supposed to be taken there, but we know that Mdzaleka it supposed to take 12000 people but as we speak the information that we have is that there are 51000 people, these are not animals there are human beings.

“And so what we need as a nation is to be honest on what is going on, the refugee issue should not be taken as a scapegoat to the problems that these nation are facing, we need to deal with our problems but not put the blame on people that are innocent, people that are running to their countries to survive and live.”

According to YAS they brought together CSO’S and the Media after government conducted relocation exercise national wide for the past two months which affects most of the refugees in this country and there is on going conservation on refugees situation which they believe that they can only be informed through engagement with the government if the CSO’s and the Media have full understanding of legal and policy framework or landscape of the country as well as the human rights implications of the actions of the government.

The Youth And Society, the CSO’s and the Media are planning to engage the government effectively to map the way forward concerning the refugees issue in this country in a due course.

Government concerned with rising cement prices

By Mike Van Kamande

Minister of Trade and Industry Simplex Chithyola Banda says the increasing cement prices are affecting both the private and public sectors especially government construction projects.

Speaking on Monday when he met Captains of the Cement Industry in Lilongwe Chithyola Banda said government is aware that the private sector in general and the cement industry in particular is going through challenges such as forex scarcity causing price movements.

“We have received complaints from the general public about the high cement prices on the market some as high as K20,000 per pocket. Government has big ongoing projects which need a lot of cement hence the shortage must be resolved promptly to mitigate high prices,” he said.

Chithyola Banda said his ministry will be communicating with the ministry of finance to assist with forex to enable the cement companies buy clinker and other raw materials.

Cement Product Limited (CPL) Managing Director Asiam Gaffar said cement companies should not be blamed for the skyrocketing prices because they have not raised prices.

“The shortage of cement on the market and the rising prices is due to acute shortage of raw materials which has resulted in scaling down of production by some players. The hiking of cement from around K13,000 to K20,000 per pocket by importers is sabotage to the local industry and we need to source forex to upgrade machinery and increase production,” Gaffar said.

Shayona Cement Managing Director Rajesh Patel said the cement players are not happy with the increased price of cement products in the country stressing his company is producing at 25 percent capacity due to scarcity of forex and inability to import clinker.

Portland Cement Chief Executive Officer Jianguo Lin said the coal they buy from Northern Malawi has so much Sulphur that cause kiln stoppages necessitating coal imports from Zimbabwe to blend with.

By Yamikani Yapuwa

Blantyre Water Board (BWB) on Monday signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with University of Malawi (UNIMA) where the board would be using UNIMA’s laboratories for water testing with the latter sending chemistry students for internship.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Blantyre, BWB Chief Executive (CEO), Dr Robert Hanjahanja said the MoU provides an opportunity for them to verify the quality of BWB’s water through the school laboratories.

Madise and Hanjahanja

“The water that we treat and supply in the city of Blantyre complies with Water Organization standards as well as Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) with above 95 percent compliance and we are always confident with the water that we distribute.

“It is good practice for a third party to have a look at what you are doing and just to make sure that what you are saying and committing to the public is indeed very viable and true.

“We will have access to UNIMA’s chemistry laboratory so that if there are any tests that we want to do but we do not have the facilities, we can take advantage of the fact that they have a state of art laboratory,” he said.

Hanjahanja added that UNIMA would help them with second opinion in case there are any queries from customers as well as issues that have risen from MBS.

The CEO said that the partnership would grant the Board an opportunity to give back to the community as they would be taking in Chemistry students from UNIMA to work with the board as attachés.

UNIMA’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr Sunduzwayo Madise said the institution is very prepared to implement the MoU with BWB as it already has the expertise, the highly sophisticated chemistry and chemical engineering laboratory as well as students who are eager to learn and offer insights.

Madise said the experience that students would get while doing internship at BWB would go a long way in giving them specialized training to enable them have experience when they go and start working wherever they want.
