United Transformation Movement (UTM) Secretary General(SG) Patricia Kaliati has called on the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to scrap the K2 500 fee for national ID replacement or renewal.

Kaliati made the call on Wednesday in Dowa at an electoral laws consultative meeting which drew together commissioners from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), officials from NRB and political party representatives through the Centre for Multiparty Democracy.

“Considering the economic challenges that the country is facing, it is obvious that a lot of Malawians, especially those that lost their ID cards in the Cyclone Freddy disaster will not manage to replace them due to the fees attached. This means a lot of people will not be able to vote, ” said Kaliati.

She further called on the NRB to work on their inefficiencies and intensify civic education for more people to register for the national ID, failing which, it will be deemed as an attempt to rig the election.

In his response, NRB Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Homeland Security Mphatso Sambo said discussions are ongoing to remove the national ID replacement fees as well as the police report requirement.

According to the new Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Act, registration for the 2025 general election slated to commence on September 2024 will only be based on national IDs.

Referee Mayamiko Kanjere is the talk of the town after flashing four red cards to Silver Strikers as Mighty Mukuru Wanderers claimed a 1-nil victory over the central bankers in a TNM Super League match played at Kamuzu stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Francis Nkonda scored the only goal of the match just seconds before half time after an assist by Emmanuel Nyirenda.

However, the match was not without controversies as referee Mayamiko Kanjere flashed seven yellow cards and four red cards during the game.

Silver Strikers Assistant coach Peter Mgangira was the first to be shown a red card in the 34th minute for uttering nasty words on the fourth official.

The second red card went to the coach himself Pieter De Jongh in the 68th minute for what was described by the referee as unsporting conduct in the technical area.

Other recipients of the red cards were Silver’s goalkeeper’s trainer Sibusiso Padambo and defender Nickson Mwase.

After the match, the goal scorer, Francis Nkonda was voted man of the match.

Wanderers are fourth on the log table with 22 points a point behind third placed Chitipa United who have played a game more than the Lali-Lubani boys.

Silver Strikers are on position 2 with 25 points a point adrift of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets who are leading in the standings.

Wanderers’ next assignment is against Blue Eagles at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Justice Chifundo Kachale has urged political parties in the country to make themselves conversant with the new electoral laws so as to ensure a smooth electoral process in 2025.

Kachale said this on Wednesday while officially opening an electoral laws meeting in Dowa which brought together MEC commissioners, officials from National Registration Bureau (NRB) registered political parties and members of the Centre for Multiparty Democracy.

“This meeting is very significant because it is the first time that MEC will be using the amended electoral laws to implement an electoral activity.

“So we believe it is important that we engage our stakeholders who are political parties to make sure that they are fully aware of the changes,” said Kachale.

Kachale said, for example, in the new electoral laws, the polling time has changed from 6 AM to 6 PM to 6 AM to 4 PM and voters need to be aware of the changes so that they do not miss the voting time.

He said:”Previously people would insult each other during the campaign but were not answerable, now they need to know that the laws have changed and it’s a criminal offence to utter insulting words during the campaign.”

Kachale disclosed that currently, the commission has made a deliberate policy to frequently engage with its stakeholders to foster collaboration, transparency, and inclusivity in the elections.

He indicated that soon, MEC is scheduled to conduct by-elections in Zomba and Mangochi this September using the new laws that were operationalised in June this year.
