Chitipa United have gotten their second win of the season that has taken them into the top five of the TNM Super League after beating Extreme FC 2-1 at the Karonga Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Rajab Nyirenda netted a free kick on the 41st minute to cut the visitors’ celebration of their equalizer shot after Malide Julius 40th minute goal cancelled out Stimela Muyira’s 12th minute opener.

Head coach for Chitipa United, Macdonald Nginde Mtetemera, was happy with the win and congratulated his boys for the victory.

“We are happy to claim the win, the boys played very well in the match and it’s nice to be where we are now, in the top 6 meaning we are in a good place. The boys are doing well, we change some boys and field others but they still perform well, it’s not a single job for me, we need to assist one another to win more.” Said Mtetemera.

Meanwhile, Joseph Malizani of Extreme FC was not happy with the win and said it is not looking good for the Mchinji based side.

“It’s a heartbreaking loss, we struggled at first but picked up after we got our goal but that free kick pained me. We are not at a good place, it’s not nice, not good to us, we are conceding first so we need to improve. By this time, we could have gotten used to the league but it’s not good for us now.” Said Malizani.

Chitipa United dominated the game from the first whistle and were paid as Stimella Muyira’s second goal of the season put the side ahead on 12 minutes after receiving a pass from Ramadan Ntafu. The hosts continued piling pressure but Extreme started settling and Malide Julius levelled in the 40th minute.

Rajab Nyirenda scored the winner in the 41st minute from a direct free kick and the two sides tassled in the second 45 minutes but yielded nothing. The result takes Chitipa up to 5th with 7 points from 5 games while Extreme are 16th with a point.

Meanwhile, Ekwendeni Hammers picked up their first win of the season after beating MAFCO 1-0 at the Mzuzu Stadium courtesy of Mphatso Magaleta’s 56th minute spot kick goal. The win takes Hammers up to 12th with 5 points while MAFCO sit 14th with 4 points.

Action continues on Monday as Kamuzu Barracks host Red Lions at the Civo Stadium in a military affair crash. FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Silver Strikers complete the top three of the Super league after week 5.

The State President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera, are today leading Malawians in celebrating the life of Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Malawi’s founding President at CIVO Stadium in Lilongwe.

Also in attendance is Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, Tonse Alliance partners, government officials and thousands of Malawians from all walks of life.

Among other activities characterizing the day include a service of worship, traditional dances, live band music and other forms of skits.

Kamuzu Day was accorded national observation for the good part of his 30-year old reign.

It, however, lost national significance when he lost power in 1994 and subsequent administrations scaled it down to a mere family event.

Upon assuming office in 2020, President Chakwera brought back the significance of Kamuzu Day and restored it on the national calendar.

Kamuzu Banda is fondly remembered in Malawi as the father and founder of the nation mainly for his contribution during the agitation against British colonial rule and the attainment of independence in 1963.

He served as the country’s first Prime Minister from 1963 before becoming President a year later.

Across Africa, he is also renowned as one of the great Pan Africanists who led the independence wave on the continent together with Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya and Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia among others.
