By Chipiliro Mtumodzi

Malawians living in the United States of America have been urged to ignore rumours that there is disunity in the Tonse Alliance Government.

Dr Chilima was speaking in New York, United States of America when he held a meeting with members of the Malawi diaspora from New York, New Jersey & Connecticut.

The Vice President stated that the Tonse Alliance is still strong and called on the people to continue rallying behind the alliance.

The meeting between the Vice President and Malawians in the diaspora opened with questions that the Malawians living in the USA have been eager to ask for some time.

One of the Malawians wanted clarity on reports that there is trouble among parties in the Tonse Alliance and that it is falling apart.

Dr Chilima in his response said this is not true and that the Tonse Alliance is still strong and will continue to work towards the betterment of the nation.

He called on Malawians gathered at the meeting not to listen to rumour mongers who spread negativity regarding the alliance.

Dr Chilima said the alliance is not just for politicians alone but for the people. He, therefore, said the people need to continue working together to ensure the alliance remains intact.

On the high profile corruption cases that have recently hit headlines in the country, the Vice President could not comment much as the cases are with the courts.

Dr Chilima also took time to assure Malawians that initiatives like the Public Sector Reforms are on course and bearing fruit. He also assured the Malawians of improved means of processing the Malawi passport, plans to improve the education system and efforts that are there to ensure the country’s development is on course via better service delivery.

Cliff Bobby, a representative of the Malawians in the USA, said the interaction was important because they were allowed to ask burning questions that affect the lives of Malawians.

“As Malawians living here, we are happy that the Vice President has accorded us this opportunity to interact with him,” said Bobby.

He said apart from assisting people affected by natural disasters the diaspora is also engaged in investment drives that will develop the motherland.

Currently, there is a good number of Malawians living and working in the USA in different professional fields.

Chakwera urges Malawians living in Mozambique invest home

By Staff Reporter

Malawians who are currently living in Mozambique have been urged to make use of the bilateral relations between the two countries and meaningfully invest back home.

Speaking during an interface with the Association of Malawians living in Mozambique (ASSOMAMU) on Friday, President Dr Lazarus Chakwera emphasised that Malawi’s ties with Mozambique signify a trusted relationship which provides a conducive environment for business amongst citizens from both countries.

He said if Malawians residing in the neighbouring country take good advantage of the already existing symbiotic relations, then a Malawi that is industrialised with a middle-class economy is possible.

”The environment is now conducive because our bilateral relations are not just on paper. They mean more economic diplomacy that is mutual and beneficial. That is why the two countries are collaborating at a level such as security and trade,” he explained.

Malawi has already signed with Mozambique a 72 kilometer railway deal from Nacala to Bangula in order to reduce transport costs of goods.

ASSOMAMU Chairperson, Chalo Ng’ambi, said the restoration of the cordial relationship between the two countries, more so with the frequent presidential visits, speaks volumes.
