Chilima not sponsoring demos- Patricia Kaliati

By Wadza Botomani

The Secretary General of United Transformation Movement (UTM), Patricia Kaliati has rubbished reports making rounds that Vice President Saulos Chilima is the architect of the demonstrations in the country.

Kaliati was speaking in Ntcheu on Saturday when she graced the launch of a football trophy in the area. She said that claims that Chilima is sponsoring demonstrations are baseless and work of propaganda aimed at tarnishing the party leader’s image.

Kaliati, who is also Minister of Gender, argues those fabricating such stories are enemies of progress with intent to distract the good relationship between President Lazarus Chakwera and Chilima.

She made the remarks today in Ntcheu during the launch of a football trophy which will be sponsored by UTM Member of Parliament for Ntcheu West, Simeon Salambula

Since President Chakwera stopped delegating duties to his Vice Chilima due to his involvement in the Zuneth Sattar Corruption scandal, Chilima came with a response where he requested the immunity of the President to be removed. Since then ,there has been a wave of demonstrations against Chakwera government asking for the President immunity to be removed , a situation that has led to some eagle eyed critics to work out that Chilima might be involved behind the scenes

RBM disowns reports of having plans to release K10000 banknote

By Robert Nkhoma

The Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) has disowned reports circulating on social media that it is planning to release a K10000 banknote in October this year.

In a statement, the RBM Governor, Wilson Banda, says the Central Bank has no intention of issuing the said banknote any time soon.

According to Banda, there are several conditions that the Bank considers before introducing a higher banknote and so far these conditions have not been met.

“One trigger point, amongst many others, for issuance of a higher banknote, is when the highest value denomination exceeds 60 percent of the total value of the currency in circulation.

” This condition has not yet been met as the ratio is currently at 26 percent,” says Banda in a statement.

Banda has since then advised members of the public to disregard the false article that has been circulating and desist from fabricating false news on the matter as any information on currency matters is always communicated by the Bank using appropriate channels.

Currently, the Malawi’s highest denomination is the K5000 banknote which went into circulation in February this year
