Karonga District council moves to mitigate impact of floods

In a bid to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events that are likely to happen as forecasted by the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological services, the Department of Disaster Risk Management in Karonga District has embarked on doing preparedness activities.

The District’s Relief and Rehabilitation Officer, Shepherd Jere disclosed this in an interview saying his department has done and is still doing disaster risk management preparedness activities.
“We are disseminating sensitization messages to those that are on lower areas to relocate to upper lands, we also want to strengthen the early warning systems so that people are able to know what disasters can affect them.
“With the coming of the seasonal weather focus we will be able now to plan for more sensitisation meetings before rains start so that we give that particular information to the communities that are affected by flooding to take prior measures in reducing the impact that floods might cause.” Jere said.

In a related development, Karonga District Department of Forestry recently embarked on restoring 600 hectares of degraded land by planting 1.5 million tree seedlings to address climate change shocks such as floods and strong winds.

The department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services on Thursday forecasted that normal to above rainfall amounts are expected over most areas across the country from January to March 2022, with some pockets of normal to below normal total rainfall in northern areas.
“Extreme weather events such as heavy rains leading to floods are likely to occur in prone areas while some parts of the country may experience pockets of prolonged dry spells during the season.” Jolam Nkhokwe, the Director of Climate Change and Meteorological Services said.
Karonga District is one of the flood prone areas in Malawi with the district experiencing floods often times.

Rotary Club of Limbe partners with Waste Advisors to sponsor a waste Management Project for Blantyre City

The Rotary Club of Limbe (RCL) in Blantyre has made a partnership with Waste Advisors aims at sponsoring a project called Waste Management Project which help  cleaning up the Blantyre City.

In an interview with this Publication, President of Limbe Rotary Club  Daniel Dunga said the Waste Advisors are implementing an innovative project that collects wastes in all major markets of the Blantyre city, sorts the wastes at source and process the wastes into manure to improve soils. He said the RCL will sponsor the transportation of the wastes from markets to the processing site.

” At RCL, we will be providing vehicles that be used to carry the wastes from the  markets during  cleaning up exercise to the processing. We hope this partrnership will be very important to make our city clean”, Dunga.

Dunga the project they are implementing is very important as among others it improves environmental health situation in the markets, create economic value from the wastes, provide organic manure to the  smallholder farmers and  create job among youths.

” This is a nice project as smallholder farmers are   able to get organic manure from the wastes process and at the same time create jobs among the youth who are employed to work in the process site of the wastes”, he said.

He said each waste collection trip will be sponsored with K35,00  and that they will sponsor as many trips as possible for a period of a 1 year.

Mubas student sounds SOS – on verge of not sitting exams due to fees problems

As the semester draws to an end, Menson Magwaya, a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology student at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Science ( Mubas), formerly the Polytechnic is on verge of not sitting  his examinations slatted for Monday, September 20, 2021.

Speaking to this Publication, Menson said  he has been told by the institution authorities that he is not eligible to sit for this semester’s examinations due to the fees balance that has amounting to K150,000.

” I have been told that I have a fees balance of K150,000 and that am not eligible to sit for this semester’s examinations to begin on Monday until I clear the balance. Failure to do so, I will not sit for end of year examinations” he said.

Menson said he has failed to register as the institution’s student all this time because his mother who supports him cannot reach the standards of helping him with the school fees and other school necessities at once.

” I lost my father last year, hence my mother alone cannot reach the maximum of helping me for she has no stiff income sources. I have no  other relative to my academic needs. I feel lost and stranded due to this retarding  academic situation”, said Menson.

Alongside Menson, is Dickson Phiri, a second year student studying Bachelor of Science in Architectural studies who  also came out asking support from well wishers to square off his K112,000 tuition fee balance.According to Dickson, his parents cannot be able to settle the balance .

” My parents are incapable of the standards of paying me the tuition fee. So am seeking help from those whom can manage to help me”, said Dickson.

Like Menson,  if the situation remains the same, Dickson will not be able to sit for his examinations starting from next week.

The two have called on government, organizations and we’ll wishers to help them with he fees balances so as they write the examinations.

At Mubas, over 50 students are on verge of not for examination due to financial challenges.

Shocking!Man resurrects 3 years after his death in Dowa

Fatsani Kalimba of Ndalama Village, Traditional Authority ( TA) Mkukula in Dowa who is allegedly died in 2018 after committing suicide is said to have resurrected from death after people met him moving around in the area on September 15, 2021.

Confirming the matter, Group Village Headman Ndama said Kalimba indeed died in 2018 and that the funeral ceremony was conducted in the area.

His brother Titani and sister alefa are in disbelief saying their sibiling died a long time ago and upon being interrogated, Fatsani said he was working in a maize mill somewhere in Dedza.

Three years have passed since the man died in 2018.









Standard Bank launches ‘UNAYO’-single hub to connect businesses, customers and communities

Standard Bank plc, on Wednesday launched Unayo, a services platform that connects businesses, customers and communities and provides a single hub for economic activity. It facilitates ease of transacting when paying for goods and services, money transfers and disbursements.

Chief Executive Phillip Madinga said the innovation aims at redefining the banking sector by creating new frontiers to serve Malawians better and wider but also connect the various ecosystems in the country.

“Unayo is a revolutionary services platform that enables us solve a range of problems faced by communities when handling their financial needs. By its very name Unayo is Swahili for “You Have It”, or Ulinayo in vernacular. The solution literally puts the power in Malawians’ hands to improve their financial wellbeing and embrace them in a growing and thriving economic ecosystem.”

Malawians can register on Unayo in two ways, either as merchant or customer designed for day to day banking services. Merchants and customers can transact with everyone in Malawi from any mobile network.

The platform allows customers to move money using Cash In and Cash Outs, and pay friends, family and merchants, and Electronic Money Transfers.

According to Madinga, Unayo will revolutionalise the banking industry by tapping the unbanked base.

“With mobile phone operators sharing over 9 million customers, it is the Unayo platform which will help include the rest of the population into banking mainstream,” he said.

He said with Unayo, Standard Bank is reiterating that it is part of an ecosystems driver that connects different customers and market players across the spectrum.

He further pointed out that that the bank is simultaneously addressing issues of financial inclusion and job creation through this innovation.

“We are bringing as many Malawians as possible into the banking system via modern technologies. No one should be left behind when it comes to accessing banking services either as a merchant or customer or beneficiary.”

In his remarks, Reserve Bank of Malawi Deputy Governor, Grant Kabango, commended Standard Bank for being a driver of change within the economy via modern innovations and technologies.

“Unayo Platform comes as a timely intervention to a sector that is dynamic and in need of new ideas to improve delivery of modern financial services. Currently, only two million of out of the country’s total population of 19 million are bank customers meaning penetration is still very low. We are convinced that Unayo has come to help in reversing that anomaly by taking banking straight to the people and doing so through modern means,” he said.

For one to be on Unayo, all they need is a mobile gadget, mobile number and Personal ID. Registration on USSD is by dialing *247# and follow the prompts. As for the mobile App, one must download Unayo from Apple Store or Play Store and follow the registration guide.
