Centre for Social Concern advises government to reduce debt

A non-governmental organization Centre For Social Concern ( CSC) has advised the government to lower its debt that impedes development of the country.

Speaking at the press briefing in Lilongwe on Friday, the organization’s Executive Director James Jakaay, said the Tonse Alliance authorities must fulfill the promises they made during the campaign before they usher into government one being to reduce debt through expenditure cut.

” But at the same time look at our president is moving around with a big convoy and also going outside the country using a huge amount of forex that makes an impediment to the development of the country, ” said Jakaay.

He further lamented that in order for the government to grow economically and hit the target of vision 2030 and 2063, there is a need to invest and not only to consume.

He said ” we are depending on maize can’t we have states that can help to produce more maize that can be exported, so that we can get forex that can be invested in other things.”

Jakaay also urged the government to use available resources like tourism that attracts a lot of tourists who bring forex that can be utilised properly so that debt can be reduced.

He also urged the government to deal with corruption which is hindering Malawians and development of the country hence debt and corruption makes things difficult.

He added by appealing to journalists to disseminate information to the public to make sure that people are able to know the debt that the government receives and how the money has been spent to promote transparency and accountability in the country.

Some reports show that government has more one trillion kwacha debt from both locally and internationally financial institutions.

Babatunde joins venda football academy

Nyasa Big Bullets have confirmed that their striker Babatunde Adepoju has completed his transfer to Venda Football Academy.

The 27-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the South African National First Division side to end his one-and-a-half-year spell with The People’s Team.

The Nigerian, who joined Bullets in the middle of the 2021 season, made 46 appearances for Maule, scoring 34 goals and providing ten assists.

During his stay at Bullets, Babatunde won one Charity Shield, two TNM Super League titles, one Airtel Top 8 Cup and the FDH Bank Cup.

After netting eight goals, he won the 2021 Airtel Top 8 Golden Boot Award and was named Player of the Tournament.

In the 2022 campaign that ended in December, the forward scored 18 TNM Super League goals to win the Golden Boot Award and inspired the Malawi champions to a fourth straight league title.

Babatunde’s third Golden Boot Award with The People’s Team came after scoring five goals in the 2022 FDH Bank Cup and he is contesting for the Player of the Tournament Award.

Court adjourns Chizuma case till February 8

Chief Resident Magistrate court Madalitso Nkhoswe has today adjourned Chizuma’s case to February 8, 2023.

According to Nkhoswe, the adjournment is because the accused Chizuma was not present in court.

Defense lawyer Powell Nkhutabasa claimed that Chizuma is currently in Blantyre where she is prosecuting Karim Batatawala and other accused persons who are answering corruption charges.

He however, asked the court to move her appearance to next week Thursday and Friday.

He also requested that the state should serve the defense with disclosure of the case.

But the state has said the disclosure will be served on Tuesday next week.

On his part Senior state prosecutor Levinson Mangani has told the court that the notice of summoning Chizuma to appear before court was served on her but she was complaining about the short notice but the state took it for consideration to change the date to Friday which is today.

Mangani added that it is worrisome that the accused person (Chizuma) is not present in court.

Chizuma is answering charges concerning a leaked audio where she disclosed the secrecy of her office with an unknown person.

Flames midfielder Yamikani Chester signs for Mozambican club Costa Do Sol

Flames and former Mighty Mukuru Wanderers attacker Yamikani Chester has signed a one year deal with a Mozambican side Costa Do Sol.

Chester made the announcement on his Facebook page and thanked Wanderers and people who have been supporting him in his football career.

The former Mighty Tigers player failed to agree terms with Wanderers and both sides agreed to part ways.

However, it was later reported that the player had changed his mind and signed a three-year deal with the Lali Luban side but this was refuted by the club.

Then the player was reported to have gone to Maputo to try his luck at Costa Do Sol where he became successful.

He has now joined fellow Flames players, MDF soldiers Richard Mbulu and Chikoti Chirwa who also signed for the club earlier this year from Mafco FC and Kamuzu Barracks respectively.

Death of 16-year-old Kamuzu Academy student Kelvin Moses intensifies calls for Suicide prevention awareness

A 16-year-old male student at Kamuzu Academy in Kasungu Kelvin Moses has reportedly committed suicide in a hostel yesterday January 26, 2023.


According to the Police, Moses committed suicide at around 3pm after being summoned for disciplinary proceedings because he was reportedly found with condoms in his locker.

It is reported that the boarding master found condoms in his locker, contrary to Kamuzu Academy’s rules and regulations and was summoned for disciplinary hearing the following day.



He took his own life at around 1500 hours in the hostel when his friends were in class.

The matter was reported to police who visited the scene in the company of medical personnel and postmortem results revealed that death was due to suffocation.

The late Kelvin Moses hailed from Subi Village in the area of Traditional Authority Khombedza in Salima District.
