MZUNI signs MoU with Soka University in Japan

Mzuzu University (MZUNI) on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Soka University in Tokyo, Japan, an agreement that will see the two institutions collaborate on joint research and other academic activities.

The MoU was signed in Japan by Mzuni Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wales Singini, and Soka University President, Mika Suzuki, during a ceremony witnessed by Malawi’s Director of Science and Technology, Chomora Mikeka.



In his remarks during the agreement signing ceremony, Singini said the partnership will allow the two universities to engage in various collaborative initiatives, depending on resource availability and institutional priorities.

“These initiatives will include staff exchanges, sharing of academic resources, and consultative engagements, among others,” he said.

On her part, Suzuki noted that over the past 11 years, Soka University has advanced its globalisation efforts and was selected for Japan’s ‘Top Global University Project.’

The partnership was made possible through the facilitation of the Malawi Embassy in Japan.

Local Govt ministry donates computers to arts organizations

The Ministry of Local Government has donated computers to various arts organizations in the country as part of efforts to promote gender issues and advance digital skills.

The computers were handed over on Monday in Lilongwe during a ceremony held under the program ‘Mainstreaming Gender Equality in Malawi’s Arts and Culture Sector’.

Speaking at the event, the Ministry’s Director of Arts, Humphrey Mpondaminga, said the computers will help the organizations strengthen gender-related work and ensure that women’s creativity is more visible, especially online.



Also speaking at the event,Christopher Magomero from the Malawi National Commission for UNESCO, stressed that artists particularly women need support in different ways to grow their work.

On his part,President of the Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM), Vita Chirwa, welcomed the donation, saying the computers will greatly support their initiatives to uplift women within the union.

In total, eleven computers were distributed to organizations including the Film Association of Malawi(FAMA ),MUM, Poetry Association of Malawi(PAM), Visual Artists Association of Malawi(VASM), among others.

MEC receives first consignment of ballot papers ahead of September 16 elections

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on Monday received the first consignment of ballot papers for the forthcoming September 16 tripartite elections.

In an interview with journalists,MEC Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja,said a total of 115 pallets of parliamentary ballot papers arrived at Kamuzu International Airport(KIA ) at around 3:30 p.m.



The MEC chairperson explained that the consignments will be delivered in phases due to the large volume of materials required for the elections.

According to Mtalimanja, the second consignment, containing ballot papers for the presidential election, is expected to arrive on September 4, while those for the local government elections will follow on September 6.

She assured Malawians that MEC is working strictly within its electoral calendar to ensure that all election materials are delivered on schedule.

“All ballot papers and related materials will be dispatched to polling centers by September 15 so that every station has them ahead of voting day on September 16,” said Mtalimanja.

She emphasized that the Commission will make sure every polling station receives the materials in good time to prevent delays or logistical challenges during the elections.

The MEC chairperson also urged political party representatives and observers to be present at the airport when consignments arrive, saying this will help promote transparency in the electoral process.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and the Malawi Police Service(MPS ) have been deployed to provide 24-hour security at KIA, where the ballot papers are being stored before distribution.

Kamtukule launches ‘Tourism Month’ with call for unity,pride in Malawi’s heritage

Minister of Tourism, Vera Kamtukule, on Monday officially launched this year’s Tourism Month at the ministry’s headquarters in Lilongwe with a call message of unity, resilience, and the vital role tourism plays in nation-building.

Speaking at the event, Kamtukule reflected on her two-year journey at the helm of the Ministry of Tourism, describing it as a period of ‘long days, spirited debates, bold ideas, and proud victories.’

The minister commended her team for their dedication and love for the country, saying their commitment had made her journey rich with lessons and memories.

“Tourism is not merely about destinations or attractions,it is about people.It is about the porters guiding travelers up Mulanje, the chefs serving warm meals in village kitchens, the communities safeguarding our heritage, and the youth daring to dream bigger for their future. Tourism is joy, it is unity, it is nation-building,” she said.

Kamtukule also pointed to the country’s achievements in the sector, including successful participation in international expos, strides in policy reforms, and efforts to elevate the country’s story on the global stage while empowering local citizens.

“As we open this year’s Tourism Month, we begin by doing what we do best coming together.Sharing food, sharing stories, sharing hope. Looking back with gratitude at how far we’ve come, and looking ahead with conviction to the greatness still to be written,” she said.

The minister thanked her colleagues at the ministry and dedicated the celebrations to the people of the country, stressing that all achievements in tourism are for them, with them and because of them.

Tourism Month, celebrated annually, serves as a platform to promote Malawi’s culture, heritage, and attractions while encouraging both domestic and international tourism.

This year’s tourism day, which falls on September 27, is being commemorated under the theme ‘Tourism and Sustainable Transformation’.

Kwera signs internship agreement with LCC

The Kwera organization has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Lilongwe City Council (LCC ) to provide internship opportunities for students supported by the organization.

The signing ceremony took place at the council’s offices in Lilongwe on Monday.

In an interview with journalists,one of Kwera’s officials, Chimwemwe Kamwendo, thanked the LCC saying the agreement will help students from various universities and colleges to further develop the skills they acquire in their studies.

On his part,LCC Chief Executive Officer(CEO ), Macloud Kadammanja, described the agreement as highly significant, noting that it will also help the council reduce staffing challenges as it works to advance the development of Lilongwe city.

Kwera currently supports nearly 1,500 university students, and the agreement with the Lilongwe City Council will run for three years.
