University of Malawi closes over student vigils

The management at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) has closed the institution following a three-day vigil students have been holding.

In a statement dated November 2, 2022, the university’s Acting Registrar, Mary Wasiri, has ordered all the students residing at the campus to vacate the site by midday Wednesday November 2,2022.

” Following the stalemate between the management and SRC, and knowing that the vigils posed a security threat to both the university community and the general public, the management has resolved to temporarily closed the University with immediate effect, ” reads the statement in part.



It adds ” Students may vacate the campus by 12 noon. For those residing on campus, ensure that you hand in your room to the security office. “

On November 1,2022, Students Representative Council ( SRC) Vice President Catherine Mwangonde called on chancellor for the university, President Lazarus Chakwera, to intervene in the academic calendar battle.

There have been disagreements between students and their administration over a recently released academic calendar which, among other things, would see some students going for a five-month annual holiday and finishing studies in approximately seven years.

Sports Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda now AIP chairperson

President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday November 1,2022 appointed Minister of Youth and Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda as the new taskforce chairperson of a committee responsible for the implementation of the Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP).

Minister of Information and Government Spokesperson Gospel Kazako confirmed the development with journalists in capital Lilongwe saying the change is one way of ensuring efficiency in the implementation of the initiative this year.

” The taskforce has been working for the past few weeks and some of the progress you see now is the work of the committee, ” said Kazako.



Kazako went on to reveal that the Agriculture Minister Samuel Kawale with his Transport counterpart Jacob Hara were in Mozambique to discuss with government officials and other stakeholders on how to coordinate the delivery of fertilizer to Malawi.

” So the ministers had to engage manufacturers to be sure of the information, ” he revealed.

Chimwendo who has been a member of the taskforce replaces Sam Kawale, who was appointed Minister of Agriculture last week.

No Bail for Mneneli Yoswa -Judge to decide on Tuesday

Joshua Chisa Mbele, commonly known as Mneneri Yoswa hopes of being released on bail today has hit a blank wall after Chief resident magistrate Madalitso Khoswe reserved ruling until Tuesday 1st November.Mbele other individuals that were arrested last Friday following the demonstrations

In a court appearance today the group pleaded not guilty to two charges being levelled against them.
The first count; Contravening a written notice by the district commissioner in relation to the demonstrations and particulars states that the six failed to comply with a written notice from the DC not to proceed with the demos to State house.

Second count; Inciting violence, the particulars states that Mbele and the others told the people that assembled at the demonstrations to physically attack shop owners and other individuals that were not taking part in the demos.

The State has told the Court that they have 7 witnesses to testify against the accused, State however says, the witnesses are not ready therefore they will not be able to proceed today.

New South African High Commissioner presents letters to President Chakwera

The New South African High Commissioner to Malawi Yvette Myakayaka Manzini has presented her letters of credence to President Chakwera.

In the discussions between the two , the new envoy highlighted Agriculture, Tourism and Mining as areas of mutual interest on which the two countries must fortify their relations.

Writing on the official Facebook page , President Chakwera said “I have welcomed her insights on the diplomatic path she intends to take in engaging with Malawi going forward. We will continue sharing experiences and learning from the Rainbow nation as we expand our mining industry, an area in which they possess unparalleled competence. Malawi will also explore more avenues to position our Agriculture and Tourism industries as enablers of development through cooperation with South Africa”.

Yvette Manzini was born in Alexandra Township, outside of Johannesburg, Transvaal in 1956, and then moved to Soweto. Manzini suffered from polio as a child and as a result spent close to four years in the hospital until the age of 6.

In April 1994, she was elected an ANC Member of Parliament. Mavivi Myakayaka-Manzini holds a Master’s in development studies, specialising in women and development, from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, Netherlands

Malawi Human Rights Commission commence Investigation on Chisa Mbele alleged assault by Police

The Malawi Human Rights Commission ( MHRC) has instituted an investigation into alleged physical assault of activist Joshua Chisa Mbele by some officers of Malawi Police Service.

In a brief statement shared on its Facebook Page on Sunday October 30,2022, the Human Rights body says Mbele’s assault raises violations of some rights such as Right to human dignity and personal liberty (Section 19) and Right to a fair and lawful detention (Section 42).

” However, the Commission will establish through its investigations what transpired.

“The Commission commenced its investigations today by visiting Mr Mbele and other demonstrators at Namitete police station” reads the brief statement in part.

It adds “The Commission expects cooperation from those in authority and any other relevant stakeholders as it continues with its investigations.”

Mbele was arrested during street protests against the government on Friday and he was temporarily detained at Area 3 Police Station before he was transferred to Nathenje Police Station on the outskirts of Lilongwe.

He was then transferred back to Area 3 on Saturday where he was allegedly physically assaulted.
